The marriage license that I received from the New York archives says he was born in Belfort. And the earlier poster, Bob Behnen, e-mailed me offline that the father-in-law of Albertine came from Belfort (to visit or live, not certain.) So we are fairly confident that Belfort is the birthplace of the Liebenguths/Loewenguths.
I was reading too fast and thought it said she was less than 14, but upon second reading last night, realized it said Elsie was over 17. (Maybe I will sympathize with my students who do the same thing!)
Thank you for your concern and all the clues.
The important thing is that we did not have a death date for Anna, and in fact thought she lived to be in her 90s. Instead, that was the 3rd wife of Eugene.
In the Italian Genealogical Society site,
http://italiangen.org Anna is indexed as Eva Liebenguth, but the death date of 20 Dec 1912 matches up.
