Dit names applied to the whole family. Its use stopped early in the twentieth century,although a few kept them longer. My great-grandmother who died in 1966 still referred to her dit name: Montpetit dit Potvin. Dont let anyone tell you that they HAD to take dit names. They didnt. Sometimes they took the extra names themselves, sometimes it was given to them by others - to describe their physical appearance, their origin, or
their personality, etc.
