It's because he didn't copy the files over, which he certainly should try, even if they're likely the reason that the tree won't synchronize anymore. That needs to be determined first with some testing. And, if those files are the reason, then it's unnecessary to run FTM from another user profile. You just delete the contents of the appdata\roaming\familytreemaker folder and restart using the original user account.
