Out of curiosity, how does the "proper" gedcom handle roles, or associations, with events or people?

For example, TMG has a structure to name people associated with an event, such as witness, signer, maker, legatee, legator, neighbor, executor, administrator, etc. These are attached to an event (called Fact in FTM).

I have setup custom facts to attach to people (not events) for their roles like the above in certain events.

I presume my FTM custom facts for these roles / associations will not be transferable to TMG in TMG's format of attaching to events.

Does Gedcom provide for roles? Are they attached to people or events? Is TMG's way of handling roles / associations gedcom compliant? Or, has TMG simply advanced beyond the capability of the Gedcom Standard in this area?

What happens to these roles / associations when a file is brought in via gedcom to FTM versus the direct capability of importing into FTM. How does FTM handle that kind of import from TGM?
