Surnames: Rowan
Greetings: As my kinfolk Lois Kirkwood has stated in a previous message, Gilbert Rowan died 4 February 1851 in Caledon twp., and is buried in Melville (United) Church cemetery in that township. He has a tombstone, and there is an adjacent tombstone for a Euphemia Rowan who died October 10th 1846 aged 58 years. One transcription I have states that the tombstone is inscribed with the word "midwife" - but this could be a transcribing error for "his wife". My source for this is the William E. Britnell collection of tombstone transcriptions. This is a private collection and not generally available. I must state that Mr. Britnell's error rate in copying data from stones is VERY VERY low, so indeed the stone could indeed state "midwife".

Gilbert Rowan's Last Will and Testament records that he left 3 unmarried daughters at the time of his death (named UPHEMIA -sic; Harriet; and Mary)& other children living are implied in the Will.
