I think the biggest surprise was how different the DNA results are for my husband, myself, and our son. Of course, we expected our son's DNA to be a mixture of both of ours, and it is, but my ethnicity profile is quite different from his. Our daughter has just sent in her sample, so it will be fun to compare her test with her brother's.
My own surprise was that I always assumed my family background was English, but I am only 9% Great Britain and 59% West Europe, with 21% Ireland, and smaller percentages of other areas. While a lot of my ancestors did live in England at various times, I guess the DNA reflects where the family lines actually came from in the more distant past.
And to answer your other question on this thread, my results suddenly showed up at about 3 pm on a Friday afternoon. They weren't there earlier in the day when I checked. Maybe they wait to send them when you have to leave your computer to go do something else, since I had only a few moments to gloat over the data before my company arrived!
