Hello Helen,

There are no listings at Ellis Island for Maria (Slovenian for Mary or Maria)

Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival
1. Maria Sifrer Austria 1913 19
2. Maria Sifrer Zabnica, Austria 1913 24

Alternate Spellings of SIFRER: SIFFRER, SIFRAR (2)
Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival Relevancy
1. Maria Sifrar Mavcice, Austria 1911 26 97%
2. Maria Sifrar Chicago, U.S. 1911 29 97%

There are also listings for SCHIFFER and SIFFRER, SIFRAR also from Slovenia.

As far as this being a German name none of the listings at Ellis Island have the immigrants declaring their Race of People as German. They all declared their ROP as Slovenian. While Slovenia had a substantial German population they declared their ROP as German.

Mavcice is about 10 miles from Ljubljana and Zabnica is about 13 miles away.

In Slovenian language the name is spelled ŠIFRER , the mark over the S gives it a SH sound, thus when they came to America they changed the spelling to keep that sound.
