Hello, I don't know if you can help me or not, but I have some questions about my lineage in regards to my possible relation to Buffalo Bill Cody as his great-great-great granddaughter.
According to family lore, Buffalo Bill Cody had an illegitimate child by a Cherokee woman by the last name of Sells in the area of Salisbury, North Carolina. As the story goes, Buffalo Bill Cody gave the Cherokee woman a gun as child support and payment, which is still kept within the Cody family in Albemarle, North Carolina, where I am from also.
Nevertheless, my grandfather family lineage is as follows:
Wilbert Franklin Cody, Jr. is my father (born 1953, still living);
Wilbert Franklin Cody, Sr. is my grandfather (born 1918, died 1981);
Pierce Monroe Cody is my great-grandfather;
Daniel Cody is my great-great grandfather;
.....and supposedly, Buffalo Bill Cody is my great-great-great grandfather.
The family legend has often included the account of a train wreck (possibly in 1901) when Buffalo Bill Cody was delayed in or around Salisbury, North Carolina, after his horse was killed in the accident. Supposedly, although the timing does not line up logically, this is when Buffalo Bill Cody met the Cherokee woman, by the last name of Sells, who later gave birth to Daniel Cody.
I would like to know if you have any information on this lineage or can verify any of these details?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
