I am searching for divorce records between Thomas A. Kennedy and his first wife, Genevieve (nee Callahan) Kennedy.
They lived together in New York City until circa 1910. After that Tom no longer appears in census records with Genevieve. Census records from 1920, 1930 and 1940 give her status as "Married".
Tom went to California and, according to descendants, never went back to his first wife in New York. His first wife would not grant a divorce.
There are two developments that lead me to believe Tom may have obtained the divorce from California. I think this might be the case because:
1. A 1916 Birth Certificate for his daughter. The baby has the Kennedy surname on the certificate.
2. A 1922 Marriage Certificate for Tom Kennedy and his second wife.
These documents are on my family tree for viewing.
Having a year for the divorce will help clear up questions about the 1922 marriage certificate.
My thinking is that a divorce could have been granted because Tom and the first wife had been living apart for many years.
The 1922 Marriage Ceremony may have been a formal, public ceremony. Maybe he had married his second wife privately before 1916.
I would appreciate any leads for finding documentation and also any info about the California divorce laws at that time.
Thank you very much.
