General Question about shorthand in records.

Classification: Query
Surnames: Sedgwick
In the "Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the I-War of the Revolution, II-War of 1812, III-Mexican War" I found the name of my ancestor, Samuel Sedgwick, connected to another private. It says this, the other man "Enlisted May 26 1777...Disc. May 26 1777; say Jan. 1 1778, in place of Samuel Sedgwick disc." What does it mean when it says "say...date...in place of...name...discharged?
