James Tompkins Watson in the 1910 Journal of American History (19 pages) which includes the full account by Timothy Resseguie of his experiences in the Revolutionary War.
Keeneys at Fort Jefferson/Clarksville?

John Dodge of New London was with George Rogers Clark in his expedition to take Kaskaskia, Cohokia, and Vincennes. Were there any Keeneys who also went with George Rogers Clark to Fort Jefferson and Clarksville in the late 1770s/early 1780s? There is what looks like an Ann Keeney or Kemey listed in Carston's book, but nothing more. Has anyone anything else, please?
Thank you,
Anne

HULET and HOPKINS, Rhode Island to Shaftsbury, Vermont (Rev. War)

Looking for information on a Revolutionary War era Joseph HOPKINS of Rhode Island.

Here is what is known for sure at this time and can be documented. There was a Joseph HOPKINS that had a wife named Mary, and they had at least three daughters named; Cynthia, Bethia, and Sylvia.

Cynthia (HOPKINS) (1775-1860) married Aaron HULET (1755-1835,) (sometimes HULETT, HEWLET, HEWLETT, HUGHLET, and probably other spellings, but HULET is most normal.)

Aaron HULET was born in 1755 in Plainfield, Windham Co., CT, and served in the Revolution as a private in several different periods of the war, and was a pensioner. I have copies of his pension file. Cynthia was his second wife and she also received a widow’s pension.

In the widow’s application there is a document signed by her two sisters that certifies that Cynthia and Aaron were married. The sisters names are given and so is the fact that their fathers’ name was “Joseph HOPKINS.” Cynthia actually filed twice, first in 1838 for her normal widow’s pension, then again in 1855 for a Bounty Land Warrant. It is not known for sure which filing the separate undated sisters document was filed, but seems most likely would have been the 1838 filing.

Now here is the problem. I have quite a lot of very good information on Cynthia and Aaron, including their graves in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont in an area that was known as “Little Rhodie” (all others in the cemetery are MATTISONs from Rhode Island.)

One of the sisters signed her name as “Bethia REYNOLDS.” The third sister signed as “Sylvia PARKER.” Who were they? Where did they live? When and who did they marry? When did they die? Where are they buried? Why can I not find them on ANY census? It seems likely that they would have resided near Cynthia in Shaftsbury, Arlington or Bennington, Vermont, or perhaps very close by across the New York State line in Washington County, New York, possibly in Cambridge, Jackson, Salem, or White Creek. Many people from all of those communities interacted quite a bit. Bethia (HOPKINS) REYNOLDS and Sylvia (HOPKINS) PARKER possibly could have still lived back in Rhode Island at that time, but if so, where?

Cynthia and Aaron were married in Foster, Rhode Island in 1793, and my strongest hunch is that Joseph HOPKINS and his wife Mary were most likely the ones known to have been from West Greenwich, Kent Co., RI., but then comes the next problem. Which Joseph HOPKINS? In several different listings of West Greenwich, RI Militia reports there were two very active Joseph HOPKINS and when ever listed they were either described as “Joseph HOPKINS, son of Thomas” or “Joseph HOPKINS son of Samuel.”

Josephs’ wifes’ name as “Mary” is listed as the name of Cynthia (HOPKINS) HULET’s mothers’ name in the Shaftsbury town records. No cemetery information is known for Mary, but she was living, “aged near 80 years,” with Aaron and Cythia in Shaftsbury, in June 1820, when Aaron filed for his pension.

So to recap:
Need help with Joseph HOPKINS (flourished during the Revolutionary War period,) somewhere in Rhode Island. His wife’s name was Mary. He had at least three daughters; Cynthia (HOPKINS) HULET, Bethia (HOPKINS) REYNOLDS, and Sylvia (HOPKINS) PARKER.

“PLEASE” help me find these people! Been searching for thirty years, I’m getting old.

The email addresses I’ve used for many years have changed several times, but you will no doubt always be able to reach me through my website: Upstate New York Genealogy, www.unyg.com.

All ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Dick Hillenbrand

I have an Ensign Jacob Preston who is listed as being on page 505 of The Record Connecticut Men in the Military and Naval Service During the War of the Revolution 1775-1783, Vol. I-III, Hartford CT., by Henry P. Johnson.
This Ensign Jacob Prestonwas in Militia Service in 1777 in Connecticut serving under Captain Isaac Ston's Company.
Through a DAR listing I also learned the following:
"Jacob Preston, (1732-1806) served as ensign in the nothern campagne and was at the surrender of (British General) Burgoyne. He was born in Windham, died in Hampton, Conn." Report from DAR ID # 28191
Do you know how to obtain his service record from the State of CT. or if the National Archives would have his record or any information?
Thanks for your help.
John

6th Regiment of the CT Militia: Summer 1776

Vol. Vlll of the Collection of the CT Historical Society (pages 157-158) lists the names from the 6th Company of the 6th Regiment of the Militia. They served during August and September of 1776 in New York. The men came from the areas of Glastonbury, Wethersfield, Kensington, and Middletown.
This was not part of the regular army...it was a militia group.
I am looking for a resource to learn about this group.

Col Durgee & Wyllys, Capt Ells & Pray, Officers of which Regiment???

Hello,
I have in front of me a copy of my ancestor's pension file statement for service in the Connecticut line resident of Berlin, Hartford, CT. It is written that he "enlisted the 8th day of December 1780 in Capt. Edward Ells Company and was mustered in Col. Wyllys regiment & was transferred to Col. Durgee's regiment in March 1781 on the continental establishment & in the revolutionary war and continued to serve as a private in 6th regiment until the 19th day of August 1783"....etc, etc, etc.
My question is concerning the regiment number. It is quite small in handwriting and I cannot tell for sure if it is the number six or another number. Can you tell from the dates and officer names if this was indeed the 6th regiment? It appears to be a single digit with script that looks like a 'th' or 'rd' behind.
Further into his testimony he describes his duty in 1781 was "employed in cleaning & repairing the United States arms, one of which had been taken from Britain(?) and others ___(?)___ from France." He says he continued employed at N' York until August when Capt John Pray (under Col. Grosvenor) who then commanded the blockhouse & the boats gave him a pass" ....etc.etc.etc.
With this information, could you help me identify the unit to which he refers? Nothing else in the file jacket mentions the regiment number, only the officer names and dates.
Thank you very much for any help you can lend.
I am seeking information on a Revolutionary war soldier David BETTS. He was a private in the Connecticut line. He died 10 Nov 1825. I am wondering if he is the same David Betts who I believe to be the father of John J. Betts of Saratoga Co., NY. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Heidi
