Usually the best place to look for specific data is in the repositories holding actual records, especially the County Courthouse land, estate, tax and Court records, and in NY the detailed State Census enumeration records. In NY the Town records can also be very useful for road petitions that may mention people who were not land owners, and such items as chattel mortgages.
