Parole
I have an ancestor, a junior officer (1st Lt Wm Pile/Piles/Pyle), who was captured at Ft Washington. The officers were released, on parole, into the city. From some documentation in Virginia, he appears to have broken his parole. It IS clear that he was captured in 1776, that he was serving with Dan Morgan in 1778 and the prisoner exchange for him (and many others) in NY occurred in 1780.
While it is mentioned in passing that he broke parole, this appears to have had no consequences. So. Could a scholar out there point me at materials that might explain the culture of 'parole' and what was to happen were you naughty enough not to abide by the concept.
Thanks in advance.
