Your principal first-look resource will be the 17-volume _Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War_.
The volumes are arranged alphabetically by surname, first name.
This was compiled by the Massachusetts State Archives from available service records. It includes militia entries as well as Continentals and State Troops.
Major libraries have the volumes, and you should be able to borrow the right volume for 'Stearns' and 'Sterns' by inter-library loan.
Or if your local library subscribes to Ancestry.com you can use that service to search for and look at images of the pages from the above book.
The books are also being posted here, I am not sure how far they have gotten:
