Mass. Soldiers & Sailors Rev. War vs. Archive Records

Can anyone tell me if the information contained in the 17 vol. series "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution" is the same as that contained in the state archives? In other words, I have found the name of a man I suspect is an ancestor along with some info in the books, would there be more info in a state archives file or is everything in the archives files also found in this book?
I have found what I am sure is my 6th gr-grandfather, Joseph Ford, in Mass. Soldiers and Sailors, but it has no identifying info other than his town. I am wondering if the state archive files will have more info than what is in the book. I know his father and five brothers served.
