One of my beloved friends, no longer with us, had a steel-trap memory for all manner of things. Few of us are blessed (or cursed, depending on your point of view) with such a grasp of the past.
Some of the literate people did keep written memoranda or even journals, of which a very few have come down to us.
But most didn't, so what we have is their best human effort.
