Military Lot 34 in Solon, New York

Good morning,

I am researching my PECK family history and have found that Mary PECK (died 1771) and Daniel MURPHY (died 1767) had one son, Daniel, "who was in the Revolutionary Army and died in the service June 20, 1778. He drew Military Lot No. 34 in Solon, N.Y., for his military services."

PECK Genealogy by Darius PECK, 1877

Can anyone tell me what "He drew Miliary Lot No. 34 in Solon, N.Y., for his military services" means? Was this his army company number or did this have something to do with his death and burial?

Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Sue

Huntington, L.I. Revolutionary Lost 3rd Battalion Roster, Baylis

My ancestor John Baylis was believed to be in the Revolutionary War according to family records but can't find him on a list. I found written in "Huntington Long Island, NY History" Peter Ross NY Lewis Pub. Co. 1902 that the roster for the Third Regiment of Suffolk county has not been found. Has anyone heard of this roster? Has it been found? My John Baylis was born 1730-35 - 1816 and was married to Phebe Lewis. Records of Old 1st Presbyterian Church, Huntington show birth, marriage, and burial.

Frederick FELLS? Loyalist or Revolutionist?

I would like to confirm if Frederick FELL whom I've traced back to Claverac, Columbia Co, New York, USA was a Loyalist or Revolutionist?

He is listed as a private in Captain Johannis Hogeboom's Company in the book Upstate New York in the 1760's by Florence Chritoph.
He is also listed as a private in Captain's Richard Esselstyn's Company in History of Columbia County, New York by Evert & Ensign.

However, I found notes on the internet that he spend 10 months in jail for opposing the revolution, but no mention of that was made in the report I received from the Columbia Historical Society.

Does someone know what exactly was lost in the 1911 fire in the NY Archives? Some sources say most of the MILITIA applications for bounty land and pensions were burned up. True?
Do any original documents still exist? If so, were are they? Microfilmed? I don't mean sources like Furnow or Roberts.
Thx
Jonathan

Does anyone know how I would go about getting the Revolutionary War Pension papers for a soldier?

My 4th great grandfather was Jehiel Green. He was born in 1761 in Bedford, Westchester County, NY and died in 1845 in Medina County, OH. He married Esther Armstrong in 1782 in Bedford, NY and they had 11 children.

In 1779 Jehiel enlisted for the first time and served 15 months under Captain Daniel Bouton and Colonel N. Delavan in the New York troops (Crane's Regiment, NY Militia and Weissenfel's Regiment, NY Levies).

Then in 1782 he enlisted for the second time and served 9 months as a private in Captain Thomas Hunt's Company in Colonel Weissenfel's NY Regiment and was wounded in Salem by a bayonet thrust through his arm.

He applied for his pension and got it on October 16, 1832 in Howard, Steuben County, NY.

When he died his widow applied for a pension and got it. We think the application number is W7556.

Thank you for your help.
Cathy Dennee Johnson
Utopia, TX

John Whitlock?

Unfortunately I have no information other than a name but I was told my family can be traced back to a Rev. War soldier named John Whitlock through the Parks line.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Edward Parks b. abt 1834 in NY. We can only find account of him listed on the 1860 census and think he may have died in the Civil War. He married Ann (possibly Augusta) Brown, had 2 kids one being my gg gf John. John married Anne Cox in the 1880s, had 2 daughters including my g-grandmother Annie Parks. She married Charles Patrick Ferris.

Apparently the Brown lineage can be traced to the 1790s in NY and I am figuring it is likely Whitlock would have been in NY as well. I know there are only some very vague details, but we've hit a dead end on Edward Parks and I'm hoping maybe tracing from further back will be able to close the gap.

Do I go through NARA or is there some other source for obtaining verification of my great-ancestor's service? He is listed in NEW YORK IN THE REVOLUTION AS COLONY AND STATE (on Ancestry) as follows:

Heading: Albany County Militia--Sixteenth Regiment
Rank: Enlisted Men
Name: Shelar Wells (supposed to be Shaler)

Other source I found, but not verified, stated his pension # was S23480. He was collecting a pension in the 1840 census for Genesee Co. under the name Sailor Weels. (At least that is how it was misspelled in the census.)

Any guidance would be appreciated, as I would like to submit his service to the DAR.

Hi! Family history has a Malica Hauber fighting in the Revolution for England, but then switching sides. I have been unable to verify any info on him except that he had 3 children: Frederick born in 1776 (?) in Renssaeler, Guy and Margaret (1788). I've tried the Schwalm group, they have a listing, but haven't yet provided any info. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look for Hessians? Thanks!

Help Please - Edward Coffin, Dutchess County

There is some indication that Edward Coffin, from Fishkill, Dutchess, New York was in the Revolutionary War. I have not found him on any list, such as the DAR lineages, "New York in the Revolution as a Colony and State", or Heritage Quest Online's "selected records from the Revolutionary War era Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files.

He was on the Provincial Muster Rolls in 1761, and a published biography of his brother's great-grandson states that "Edward Coffin (supposed to be our subject's great-grandfather or his brother) was a member of the colonial army during the Revolution, and one of his powder horns is a prized souvenir, now in the possession of our subject."

If anyone has any other resources, I would greatly appreciate a lookup, or at least an idea where to look. Thank you.

- Hereld Stuart

A NSSAR application lists this reference for a John Coffin from Dutchess County, NY as a private in the NY state militia. Could someone please check pages 278/279 and page 345, and let me know what is said about John Coffin, and if there are any reference to other Coffins?

Heritage Quest on-line has a different book called "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" which lists John's name within his company, but no other info.

Thank you for your time.

Livingston vs Rhinelander sugar house

The idea that Rhinelander's sugar house was used as a prison during the Revolution is apparently a myth long in development. This webpage gives a very good overview of that sugar house and why it was most likely LIvingston's sugar house that most if not all prisoners were held:

http://www.mcny.org/Exhibitions/rhinelander/rhinelander.htm

From what I've read discussing the more recent and scholarly views on the subject, the only sugar house for which there is proof that it served as a prison is Livingston's (also called Liberty St.) sugar house. There are two engravings of that building in the New York City Library Picture Collection. I've posted them at my website temporarily. It was very similar in construction to the Rhinelander, and probably also had the steep Rhinelander roofline that doesn't show in the engravings (it doesn't show in engravings of the Rhinelander, either, but the photos clearly show it). Other sugar houses MAY have been used as prisons, but when the Sugar House is referred to, it is always THE Sugar House, and the Livingston building is most likely being referred to. It is very long gone, as is the church next to it, which was also used as a prison.

http://dougsinclairsarchives.com/genealogy/livingston1.jpg
http://dougsinclairsarchives.com/genealogy/livingston2.jpg

Doug
Criteria for Land grant if soldier "died in service"

I recently learned that my ancestor who served in the 4th NY "died in service" on May 9, 1777. The "in service" designation relates to the fact that his heirs were able to file a claim for a land grant after the war based on his service and the circumstances surrounding his death. The claim was files in 1808 and I have the findings of the commission that said that is "met the standard" for the awarding of a grant. The file was destroyed in the 1911 fire in Albany so we have no way of knowing what the circumstances were.

Does anyone know what the criteria were that were used in deciding whether a soldier who "died in service" would get a land grant?

Thanks very much

Found Joseph Schoonover's Revolutionary War records on Heritage Quest, 5 pages in total showing his application for a pension as a result of service in the Revolutionary War. States his birthdate as 16 March 1761 in Minisink, Orange County, New York. Very likely to be my 4th Great-Grandfather. These are handwritten records. Can anyone translate/transcribe them into legibility?
Bob Schoonover Email: schoony@comcast.net

Staten Island Records - late 1700s

I am trying to find documentation that CORNELIUS McLEAN SR. (circa 1774-Sep. 12, 1836, Washington, DC) was born on Staten Island, Richmond Co., NY.

The Reformed Dutch Church that housed many of the records of the Staten Island McCleans/McLeans was destroyed during the Revolutionary War.

My theory is that Cornelius Sr. was one of the boys aged 16 and under listed on the 1790 Richmond County census of widow, Ann(e) [Simonson] McLane [McLean] who was the widow of William McClean/McLean, d. 1777.

Can anyone direct me to an archivist or historian who may be able to assist me in getting civilian records of Staten Island residents from about 1783 to 1790? I'm looking for anything like family bibles, diaries, or tax listings that may talk about the Staten Island populace in the immediate aftermath of the war.

Thank you,
Jamie Perez

LOOK-UP: CAPT Marshall B. Burke, 9.N.Y.H.A., Revolutionary War

A friend has found the tombstone and gravesite of CAPT Marshall B. Burke, who apparently served with the 9th New York Heavy Artillary during the civil war. This tombstone was discovered in an unmarked cemetery in Comstock, Kalamazoo County, Michigan and was not previously recorded. Believe Marshall B. Burke to be related to John L. Burke and John S. Burke who are buried in the Vicksburg, MI cemetery which is nearby. My relative, Mary Schoonover, was married to John L. Burke, and their son was John S. Burke. Seeking any history about Marshall B. Burke including Revolutionary War service. Also what does the G.O.C. or C.O.C. on his tombstone mean?
Bob Schoonover
Email: schoony@comcast.net

3 Pringle Brothers, possibly related to Pringle's in Tree, Revol war

I have a story of my past family of Pringle's, who where
3 brothers who came from Wale's, Scottland or England, before the Revolutionary War. All three served their new country with great honors.
They could have been the three brother's who lived in the Tree roots, in what is West Virgina today. All I have is a state of the father of my 4th great grandfather, William Pringle, who came over with 2 of his brother's before the Rev war.
No names where named, in this statement, of William's 2nd Son Wesley P Pringle; of Grant, Neb, 1879 to 1921. This is in Wesley's Bio.
These 3 Pringle brother's could have intered the country from Canada into New York. Not much info I know, but hopefully it may help. Thank you, if you might have an Idea of who these family Pringle's could be. Audrey

His heirs applied for and were granted a land grant in Cayuga County after the war based on his service and the circumsances surrounding his death.
Battles of Long Island and Brandywine

Can anyone tell me what military district these battles were in during the Rev. War? From research, for instance, I understand that what is now KY was part of the VA military district and I'm assuming the same held true for other parts of the colonies. My delema is that I have an ancestor that enlisted in PA, fought at the battles of Long Island and Brandywine and mustered out at Falls Point MD. The PA Archives has no record of him as a PA soldier. I would like to find solid proof that he was a soldier in the war. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Am researching the family tree of Joseph Holmes. He was with the Prince of Wales American Volunteers - Hoyt Co. from 1777-1780. From 1781 - 1782 he was on leave in New York. On February 1 1783 he was discharged. Shortly after he went to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is believed to have originally come from New Jersey. He also has two children - a boy and a girl. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

NY Rev War Grants - Oneida County
Interesting tidbit: what is now Redfield Road in the town of Florence, Oneida county, and which was called The Old State Road on a 1850 map, was based on a Rev. War military road according to "The History of the Town of Florence" by Fr. Riley...

11 and 12 acre chunks of land (surveyed for Scribas Purchase) had been previously set aside for "Old Military and Refugee Grants" as mentioned many times over by Gerrit Smith, in his business Correspondence and Great LandBook at the U of Syracuse, from @1830 and 1840's.

Family legend has it that my ancestor Buckley received one of these grants. If anyone has any further info on how I might track down more info (I guess in Albany?) I would be most appreciative!
