I have an ancestor, Beniah(Benjamin) Holdren (Hauldron, Hawldren, Holden, etc) who is on the 1840 Index to Pensioners in Bucks Co PA. I have received his Pension Payment Ledgers from the PA State Archives. The payments started in 1839 "per act of 1939". I can't find him in any Pension application papers. I have searched the NARA microfilms under as many spellings I could think of and did not find him. Where do I go next? Should there not be a pension application somewhere?
Thanks

British deserters

I am looking for information on a William Cochran which according to one bio I have seen said he deserted from the British army and joined the Continental troops:

"William Cochran came to the colonies as a British soldier with his two brothers during the Revolutionary War. They deserted soon after they came over, and joined the Revolutionary army, but we have been unable to obtain the Revolutionary record of William Cochran. There is no doubt, however, but what he served in the Revolutionary War, but in what capacity we are unable to learn. The facts as to his service are known through his family."

From: A History of Adams County, Ohio, by Nelson W. Evans and Emmons B. Stivers, (E.B. Stivers, West Union, OH, 1900), page 336

I have seen reference to a book that has documented deserters:

British and German Deserters, Dischargees, and Prisoners of War Who May Have Remained in Canada and the United States, 1774-178, by Clifford Neal Smith, 1989

If anyone has access to a copy of this book, would you please see if there is a William Cochran listed in it.

Here is a little more on his service:

William Cochran - Served in Revolutionary War from PA in different regiments. Born County Antrim, Ireland in 1722. Married Elizabeth Boothe, who died in KY in 1823. Children: John, born 1781, (probably others). Sergeant in the War of 1812. Died Brown Co., OH March 1814. Buried on the farm where he lived, near mouth of East Fork of Eagle Creek near Fitch Bridge. Lived in PA, later in KY. About 1794 or 1796 came to Brown Co., OH. Died there at the age of 92 years.

From: OFFICIAL ROSTER, SOLDIERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION BURIED IN OHIO.
Carnes in Rev. War.... need help/suggestions...

I am trying to find the father of my 4th great grandfather... My 4th was William Carnes b. 1792 in York County, PA. who emigrated to Ohio with his parents when he was 3 years of age ; his minority was spent in Guernsey and Belmont Counties; in the spring of 1845, he moved to Delaware county, settled in Porter Township, and died in 1876. William's wife's name was Jane Harris before marriage; she was born in Virginia, and came to this State when she was 15 years of age, and was married to Mr. Carns in Morrow Co.

According to the history of one of Wm and Jane's chilren it says "Mr. Carns' grandfather was in the Revolutionary war, was taken prisoner at the battle of Bunker Hill, and was one of three of his company who survived. His father was a participant in the war of 1812.

I have Wm's pension papers from War of 1812. His father was evidently in the Rev. War who was taken prisoner and one of three that survived...

Now I am thinking (was thinking) that his name SHOULD be easy to find... LOL... I am not having much luck...

I am not sure where he was at the start of the War... I just know that in 1792 as that is where Wm was born and then they moved to Ohio... Don't have anything on a death date for Wm's father...

From the different Rev. War sites I have looked at there were several Carnes... I am really looking at John Carnes, but again I am not for sure... Any help would be greatly appreciated if someone could lead me in the right direction!

Thanks!

Juls

Rev soldier ancestors, where to research next?

I have a few fairly certain Rev War veteran ancestors, where do I research next to find out some more info? I want to know everything, realistically I know I can't, but I want to fill out the picture as much as possible.

Recognized by the DAR (my index 4th printing June 1973) ...

Jacob Stough b. 1753 d. 1-3-1823 m. Catherine -- Pvt. PA. (I've looked through file in Cumberland Co, PA that has a bunch of correspondance concerning application to DAR)

Joseph Watson b. 1760 d. 1836 m. Christian Ressler (2nd wife, I descend from 1st wife, Anna Maria Coke/Koch?, some
similar sounding name????) Fif (fife?) PA ... maybe either from Lancaster Co, PA or Cumberland (not probably at this period of time) ... possibly even from York Co, PA.

I have a Henry Rheem/Reehm (many spellings), age close, but death date and wife doesn't match one in book. Not certain he was veteran.

An ancestor recognized by the PA Sons of the Revolution is Jacob Koble, born Nov 1755, died 1808, married Margaret Emmerich (numerous spellings). This org., along with some others, placed a "new" stone on Jacob Kobel's grave in the 1930s in Altalaha Lutheran Church in Rehersburg, Berks Co, PA. He is not in the DAR records ... I made a request online through them.

I think that's it for PA. I've checked the PA online card file ... interesting, not much info, various spellings, not verification of sevice. I'm just not certain where I should go next and if there's a map I should follow in my research.

Thank you for any help.

Stephanie

Swarts / Hessian Soldier

Looking for any information affirming William Swarts Sr. as hessian soldier.
I have him listed in tax records in 1786 in Mahoning Twp Northumberland co Pa. and the following year in Lycoming Twp Northumberland Co and then the 1790 census in Mifflin Tap Lycoming Co. He had two horses and three cattle, three sons and three daughters in the 1790 census so IF he was a soldier and hessian he married very quickly after being released and was somewhat established to have five children by 1790 and moving north to be settled.

Does anyone know of a William Swarts who came down from NY State and would have migrated throgh Mahoning Twp. Seems bit odd to me but I have an Elizabeth Swarts married Gabriel Morrison and all dates seem to fit. But she was born in NY and listed in 1850 census as 74 and living with daughter.
THis has changed my search from Chester Co to New York St for his migration initiatian point.
There is Swarts who built a mill in Berks Co and he would be a father but they give no Name for the Swarts. There are Swarts who helped build Fort Swarts and and no specific names.

Anyone else heard of this info and have any clues.
Connie
LONG family of Lancaster, PA

The proverbial brick wall. Looking for Patriots, James & Col. Cookson LONG who I believe to be brothers. James being my 3rd g grandfather. James' tombstone in Crawford County reads: James LONG, b. 1738, served as clerk under General Wayne under the illustrous Washington. Died April 6, 1838 in the 93rd year of his age. Crawford County History states that James, a native of Lancaster, came to the county in 1794 or 1797 with his four sons, John, James, George and Cookson.
At least 4 James LONG's were noted in Lancaster County during the War, but their ages do not match. Nor do the ages of those who are listed in NARA.
Col. Cookson LONG who died in VA in 1786, is listed in the DAR index, but I have been unable to connect the two men I believe to be brothers. The Colonel's son, George died in Warren County, next door to and about 25 miles from Crawford County.
Any suggestions that I have not already explored would be greatly appreciated.

Pennsylvania Service records

I really hope that someone out there can help me. I found an "Index to Revolutionary War Service Records", I believe either at my local library or at our State Historical Society, and it had listed the following:

Wiseman, Adam, srv. in 8th PA Regt.
Adam, srv in 13th PA Regt.

However, when I search the Pennsylvania database on here, I don't find Adam, and all of the people in those lists have a rank with their names, whereas Adam did not (no idea why). There was a "Thomas Wiseman, srv. as PVT in 1st. MD Regt.", but as you can see, he has a rank with his name. I really need to know as much as possible about this Adam, as He MAY be a distant relative. Any help that anyone can give me would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Dawn Tonneman

His grandson George Bringman was on of the founders of the Sons of the American Revolution in Richland Co., OH.
Widow Catherine Smith w/o Peter? helped Rev/War efforts

My SMith Lineage has a Widow Catherine Smith of Lycoming county PA that has reportedly been recognized for her supporting the war effort by boring gund for the rev.war.
she and her sons owned a grist/ gun boring mill in Lycoming county during Rev War. She was burnt out of her business twice, had a young son killed by indians, another son never seen from again during the raid and eventually had her poroperty "stolen" and sold while she was forced to take shelter at a Fort during the raids.

She historically is known for walking to Philiadelphia to try to recover her property several times to no avail. She had been told by a politician that if she would give her daughter CAssandras hand in marriage that she would get her property back, she is quoted as replying (basically) that she did want to receive her property back by any "left-handed" measure..

PA historical Society recognized her by placing a marker along the road somewhere near White Deer/ Nitteny Mts. area. She also has a mountain top named after her Catherines Crown.
She lived at Great Island, PA on the fork of the Sesquahanna River. I have a copy of the map made in the late 1700's showing this to be true.

We belive that at least one of sons served during the war, It was reported that follwing her death that one of her sons from Ohio returned , shook his head and made a statement that it was a travesty what happened and was never to return again..

I do not have a complete listing of her reportedly 11 children but am looking for any information in regards to her sons.

I am a desc.of her grandson George and Eva ( possible nee Barhtolemeuw) Smith thru their son Samual b:1805.

Is anyone familiar with this family? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
What are "Donation Lands"?

I am not sure how to interpret the below announcement which came from a 7/26/1806 Butler newspaper.

The questions I have are: What were "Donation Lands"? What are "Depreciation Lands"? Did "unseated" mean that the person never took possesion of the land?

The particular case I am interested in is the last name below, Murry Lackey. As you can see, his case was part of the "Second Donation District- Reputed Owners and Soldiers". However, all the other land parcels in that group have two names. Is one of them the "reputed owner" and the other the "soldier"? In Murry Lackeys case, his is the only name.

This could be very important info in linking my Butler County Lackeys to the county they originated from (which is to be determined).

Here is the item in question. I welcome any ideas about this. Thank you!

**************************
Sheriff's Sales
By virtue of a warrant under the hands and seal of the Commissioners of Butler Co., will be exposted to sale by public venue, at the Court House in the town of Butler in said county, on Monday the ?? day of September next, and continue from day to day by adjourment until the following tracts of unseated, depreciation and donations lands, situate in said county are sold or so much of each tract may be found necessary for the payment of taxes and arrearance of taxes due thereon respectively besides costs.

John McCandless, Sheriff
July 21st 1806

Second Donation District - Reputed owners and Soldiers
Beamer Andw - Th Herrington # ?78, 200 acres
Hunt, Wils??? - in Thompson, #427, ?00 acres
John Hogg - Jas.

Could a bond servant serve in the military in the Revolutionary War? An ancestor was sent to the Colonies as a bond servant after being convicted of a crime in 1773. Is there any way I can find out if he served in the war? Would this have been allowed? So far have not been able to find any service records for this man. Any help would be appreciated! I know that he lived in Pennsylvania after the war.

This David McClure was at a Council of War held at Catfish Camp, now Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1776. He among other officers were responded to Gov. Patrick Henry's order to provide him with "safe places of deposit" for six tons of lead. One of the identified men of Lt.Col. McClure was a Pvt. Joshua Shelby who is one of my wife's ancestors. I am attempting to identify the skirmishes, battles, and/or campaigns of Lt.Col. David McClure so as to more fully embellish the wife's family history. If you have any knowledge of McClure's engagements with Indians, British, or others, I would appreciate having a message from you. I am willing to share my information and sources, limited as they are.

My source for information about the shipment of lead in this message was: Samuel P. Bates. HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Chicago: Nelson Rishforth & Co., 1888, pp. 251-252.

Very Old Family Graveyard on Dutch Run, Whiteley Twp, Greene Co, PA

There is a very old family graveyard on the east side of present day Dutch Run Road (was Lantz Run Road). It is located in the woods about 125 yeards east of Dutch Run just north of Miller Lane Road (located on the west side of Dutch Run). There are three old hand carved and hand lettered tombstones. All three appear to have been cut and lettered by three different people. Most the lettering is not readable but we did manage to see dates of 1740 and 1803(?) on one stone. No names are readily visible. There is also indication of additional graves at the site and possible a old foundation (log cabin or log house maybe) a few feet east, and uphill, from the graveyard. It is our hope that someone knows more about this graveyard. The old Greene County Whiteley Twp. map does show a 'tenent' house and orchard in what appears to be the same general area.

I have found that I may be a descendant of the George Yeakley that was born ~1735 in PA. I m looking for any information people have, including information on who his children were. Also, I have read in several places that he served as a frontier ranger in PA during the Revolution and am wondering if anyone has any information about his service and if this information has been used to apply to the DAR. Any information anyone would be willing to give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Melissa
mtickner@mcw.edu

I'm trying to verify whether or not Giles Davis fought in the Revolution. He married Nancy on Nov 8, 1787 in Nelson Cty, KY; may have been born in NC or Virginia. I've read that he fought on the Pennyslvania line. He had two children: Mary Polly Davis (1775 in NC or VA); and David Davis (about 1777 in NC or VA). Thanks. Arlene

Wyoming Valley Massacre

My gggggg-grandfather, William Smith died 7/1778 in the Wyoming Valley. Reportedly of exposure after capture by the indians. I have found no info on with which company he served. (awaiting applications from DAR, five used him as thier ancestor) His son, William Jr., also served and died there. He served with Ransom's and Spalding's companies. One reference in a book said William Jr. was shot while retrieving water for a fort? Neither one is listed as killed in the massacre at the monument. Any suggestions on how I might find out how they died?

The men of Pennsylvania Regiment of Riflemen - 1776

Hello
I am interested in this son and father below. I am interested in any information, about the men of this Battallion/Regiment. I am also trying to find where George Sr went. Also how to go about finding these records in an archive.

"Enlisted with Colonel Samuel Miles' 1st Battalion, Pennsylvania Regiment of Riflemen on May 2, 1776. Assigned to Captain Lewis Farmer's Company Unit, which was mainly on Garrison duty at "Liberty Island", in Philidelphia until the end of July, 1776. Musters show that while there, George Sr enlisted with the same Battalion and was assigned to the same Company as his son."

"...only 37 were present for the muster at King's Bridge. While George Sr was accounted for, George Jr was listed as "missing since the Battle of Long Island".

Thanks
Laura

Justin McCarty PA soldier

Question: My Justin McCarty enlisted in PA and fought in the battles of Brandywine and Long Island. He mustered out of Falls Point MD. A fellow researcher inquired about Justin at the PA National Archives and they found no record of him as a PA soldier. Would he be considered a PA soldier or would it depend on the military district he was in? Does anyone know what district those battles were in? Might they have been Maryland's military district, since that is where he mustered out? I just don't know where to look to find proof of his service. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is a website by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (aka PA State Archives) which includes a Revolutionary War Military Abstract Card File. There are three cards for John GALBREATH (or GALEBREATH, also GALBRAITH). Two indicate that he served in the Militia from Bedford Co, receiving two certificates: one issued 4/8/1785 and one 9/21/1785. The third card does not show the county, but indicates that he received a certificate issued 10/2/1788. Has anyone obtained such records based on those abstracts?
