Cousins! My husband is descended from John Cabler Fray's son Columbus Claude Fray, who married Mary Francis Gwynn. I have a son, Glen, born 8 Jan 1917, d 5 Oct 1992 for Estil Bacon Fray. Is that your line? I have an obituary on John Edward from the Higbee News which I can send to you if you don't have it. I also have Martha Barnes Fray's obit.
The Virginia Fray Lewis book has the family outline but some errors have been corrected recently. Have you looked at John Blankenbaker's work on Germanna at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germhis...?
He's the one who concluded that John Fray's wife was actually Rebecca Swindell, not Yowell. Also, his research disproves the Alsace-Lorraine connection that Virginia cites in her book. She was citing a book written by one of the early Hebron Lutheran ministers, who said many of the Germanna immigrants came from Alsace-Lorraine. Actually, none came from there. Read his notes for more details. Search using Frey/Frei/Fray variations. Also search Swindell/Swindle and Crees/Crease/Greys/Creas/Criece. Then see if you can get a copy of the article "The Origins and Ancestry of Lawrence Crees" in Before Germanna No. 10, May 1990. It's a gold mine of information on the Crees line.
Virginia Lewis also says that John Cabler served in the Mexican War, but the Missouri Secretary of State has no record of him in their archives. She cites a county history book but I've never been able to locate the citation, although I've seen the book she mentions.
As for John Fray, in 1763, he was a chain carrier for "Adam, George, Frederick and Joel Pamgarner." In a 1764 deed in Culpeper county, John Fray is listed as a "taylor." I have never found proof that he served in the Revolution.
Do you have the information on Aaron Fray and Elisha Huffman selling water pipe to Thomas Jefferson for the University of Virginia? We don't know if the contract was ever executed.
You can contact me at msmertens@suddenlink.net for more information.
