If you know where an ancestor was born you may
be able to find his regiment number that way.
I have some old recruiting district maps and with
latitude and longitude of a birthplace I may
be able to give you a regiment numer or two.
If you know that your regiment was not Infantry
but was cavalry or artillery I cannot help you.
There were only 63 regiments before 1820 and back
in 1740 there were only 42.
If the regiments you want go back that far you should
find them in "The Army of Maria Theresa"
There is a list of regiments and their Inhabers (the names
you are looking for) in that book.
Or just Email the war archive. You can access Email at
their website by looking for a link "Kontakt"
or use the Email address at:
http://www.oesta.gv.at/site/5003/default.aspx
OK to write in English. Make sure that you put
the Edress in your address book so any reply does not
get put into your spam folder.
