Croats in WW1 Austro-Hungarian Army

Hello,

I am looking for more information about my great-grandfather, Ante Curkovic (1877-1918) who was born in the Duvno (now Tomislavgrad) region of Bosnia and Hercegovina.

During the last two years of WWI, he was said to have fought for the Austro-Hungarian army in Galicia near the Romanian border. Apparently, he survived the war but died shortly thereafter. A relative told me he died of botulism but church records state that he died as a result of a cold (maybe Spanish flu?).

I tried to rent a microfilm from the LDS of military records but was told that the material was restricted.

I am curious and would like to learn more about him. I will be in Vienna for a very brief period of time late this year and would appreciate any help or pointers in helping me learn more about my great-grandfather.

Austran Infantry Uniform

After a lengthy on-line research effort, we have come to the conclusion that the 3 men in the attached photo belong to an infantry regiment of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The balls on the lanyard indicate that the men were marksmen or sharpshooters. This is a B&W photo but the balls were apparently red in color.
The photo has not been accurately dated but we believe it was taken in the late 1890's or possibly early 1900's
While we are reasonably certain about this I'm hoping that someone can confirm.
Thanks

It says after the debt was payed, his father got his passport in Odenburg (Sopron). Can anybody tell me where I might find any of the records from Michael's military days or from his discharge? Also does anybody know if they might have taken pictures of the enlisted men? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bobbi

Born on the Estate of Tapolca & was later listed as the steward/owner of it. It is told that we had family that serves as bodyguards to the King. My family were of nobility in the region & was able to confirm being enobled in 1515. They are mentioned in Kemplen, Ivan Nagy, Joseph Palmay & Borovszky's noble books. I would appreciated any info that can be provided or to where I may learn more of my family.

hello. i need someone's sage advice. i am trying to verify my grandfather's military service. he was born in 1880 in pernau or porno in hungarian. i determined that the only records that could be of help to me were the muster rolls. so i found and ordered the muster rolls (lds#0629876) for the vas, szombathely military district for 1890-1914 for births from 1869-1893,fully expecting to find him and his brother stefan. he's not there. am i missing something? is there a reason the record might be elsewhere? szombathely is 5 miles from pernau/porno. i don't know where to search next. thanks. john e.

I have a picture of my Grandfather, Valentine Muller taken in 1889. I have identified the picture as an Austo-Hungarian military unform. It has what appears to be a dark colored cord on the left shoulder with 5 pom poms or cloths balls on them. Does anyone know the significance of these balls?

I continue to search for information about the younger brother of my husband's great grandmother. Karoly was born 5-2-1869 in Vizkelet to Kelemen Deisler and Erzsenet Nyeki Nemeth. I do not know his date of death or where he is buried. He was married to Helene Adamy and we believe they had three children. A daughter name unknown married to Gyula Murakozi a pastor at a Reformatus Templon in Budapest, Dr. Lajos Nemeth and a son name unknown who was a artillary officer. We know that Karoly attended the Military Academy at Wiener Neustadt and was awarded the gold Vitez in World War 1. I do not know when he adopted his mother's maiden name. The information that I was able to obtain from the Hungarian Military Museum website shows his name as Deisler. We also believe he taught at the Ludovika Akademia. I would appreciate any information about this family. Thank you, Kathy

Military Uniform Identification

I have been following, with great interest, this message board regarding the Austro-Hungarian military and in particular the identification of military uniforms.
I've been doing genealogical research for several years now but have come to a stumbling block when it comes to both my grandfathers. I know both were in the war and I assume it would have been WW 1 as they would have been the right age. I recall my mother mentioning that her father was killed in action and I thought she had said it was just behind their village. I never knew what happened to my father's dad and just assume that he was also killed in action as there are no death records for either of them in the village archives where all the other information I have came from.
My hope is that someone reading these boards will be able to give me some insight as to where to look for information about both my grandfathers' military records.
I've attached a picture of both in hopes that someone might recognize the uniforms and be able to tell me where they would have served, so I'd at least have some idea where I should be looking for information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was in the Canadian Red Cross Blood Tranfusion Service in the 1950s (Saint John,NB,Canada). I recall volunteering to help a shipload of Hungarian refugees to find their relatives, but need the date and further info. They arrived scared and confused, some with a piece of paper giving simply a name, incomplete address, or even less, and we had to go to the telephones set up for this and try to help. PLEASE, would someone be able to help me complete my memory of this heart-moving event ???

Hello. I have a picture of my g-grandfather who was Croatian and died in WWI. We don't anything else outside of this one photograph. I have posted it at http://home.neb.rr.com/kofc09563/WWI/WWI.htm and was wondering if anyone might be able to pick out any info from the picture (ie. uniform type as to what regiment, etc.). We are about 95% certain that the medal he is wearing is the Mobilization Cross issued for the 1912-1913 Balkan Wars.

Thanks for any insights and info!
Robert

Hungarian military - pre-WWI

I am trying to find out what regiment, division, etc. my father served in. I only have a b&w picture of him in full dress uniform. He has a sword by his side and his headress is a stiff tall black cap with a visor and a black ostrich feather which goes under a brass chain and down one side of the cap. There is a large brass ball anchoring the feather and just above the visor is a large brass eagle. His jacket has stiff high collar (like a chinese collar) this and the cuffs seem to be a diferent shade than the rest of his jacket. He has a belt with a large brass buckle with a circular emblem on the buckle. The pants seem to be another shade different from the jacket. The picture is 3/4 so I cannot see if he is wearing any boots - I'm guessing he is not.

His name is Istvan Orgovan Born December, 1888 Kisvarda (Szabolcs megye), Hungary and since you had to be 21 before you could serve I estimate he served from 1909/1910 to 1912 (2 years service was required). He emigrated to the US in 1913/1914 and married my mother in 1916 in the US.

I only have this picture to go by, he never spoke of his service and there were no other documents regarding this.

Could anyone please tell me where I could get some information re Hungarian divisions out of Kisvarda in that time frame, or any link to descriptions of the Hungarian uniforms worn by the different divisions?

Thanks very, very much for any help. I am very discouraged as most of the info is limited.

Edith Orgovan Marino

Military Records

My GGrandfather (and his direct male ancestors) was in the Austrian Army and died in 1889. One record said Graf von Dagenfeld's regiment. The Doms family was in Kleinbosig (now Bezdidice, Czech Republic), Bohemia, Austria. The Nevyhosteny family originated in Vapno, Czech Republic. Both towns very close to each other, about 30 miles n/ne of Prague. Are the records of the Regiment available?...at LDS libraries? Is the name of the regiment correct for that area?
