John,

For more information on the battle, from both sides, go to http://www.angloboerwar.com/ and enter koorn spruit in the search box. Every link adds a bit more to the picture.

I also did it more digging on George Osborne and he’s proving to be a bit of an enigma. Despite what was reported in The Times, he doesn’t appear to be listed in the GRO Index to Natal & South African Forces Deaths [1899-1902] under the name G J Osborne, although there is a C J Osborne 14th Hussars listed. However, Kevin Asplin’s web site doesn’t show anyone of that name on the 14th Hussars Queen’s South Africa Medal Roll, but there is Cpl Osborne 2004 listed as being on the QSA Medal Roll for Robert’s Horse. Finally there is no Cpl GJ or CJ Osborne in either the Hussars or Roberts Horse on John Dovey’s South African Roll of Honour web site. I think the only way to resolve the problem is obtain a copy of his death certificate from the Overseas Section of the GRO Southport using the reference:
Natal & South African Forces Deaths 1899-1902.
Osborne, C.J.; Regiment 14th Hussars; page 279

Not available online but see if there’s an entry for him at the National Archives, Kew, in Document Piece WO127/19 Nominal Rolls South African War – Robert’s Horse, or an Enrolment form in WO126/119 Enrolment Form South African War – Roberts’ Horse. K-P. Note how the position of the apostrophe changes for each title, it’s important if you search the catalogue at the National Archives.

As there doesn’t appear to be any Muster & Pay Books for the 14th Hussars that cover the period before and during the Boer War I suggest you contact either of the Museums I mentioned earlier and see if they have anything. Have you found him in any pre-1901 Census?

The GRO index to Natal & South African Forces Deaths is available in the Overseas BMD indexes [or indices] at several UK main UK libraries, LDS Family History Centres and the National Archives, but is only available online at the pay per view site findmypast.com. Kevin Asplin’s web site is at http://hometown.aol.co.uk/kevinasplin/home.html , for the Cavalry QSA Roll [includes the 14th Hussars] scroll down to item 3, for the Roberts Horse Roll click on the “index page” link under item 4.
John Dovey’s web site is at http://www.justdone.co.za/ROH/

I’m not a professional researcher but for a project of mine, I’m trying to find more details on Boer War casualties. If you can provide any background on him, where born, age, family etc., I’d be interested to hear. Contact me off board at jeff [nospace] p dot h at bt [no space] internet dot com [do the obvious with spaces & text] and make the subject Boer War – Osborne.
