If he served with the 1st [battalion] KOYLI in 1901 he wouldn’t have been South Africa as that battalion was in Ireland from 1900 to 1902 when they returned to England [Aldershot]. Prior to that the 1st Battalion was in India 1881, Burma 1886 and a composite detachment served in Africa during the Ashanti War [Dec 1895- Jan 1896]. The battalion also served in SA in 1906.
Although he also served in WWI, he may have received a pension for long service – have you checked for reconstructed service records on Ancestry’s search pages?
