Hello Lesley,
Thanks for your email.. I am pleased to say that I found your Great Uncle's enrolment form.. if you would like to email me at
christoe@mac.com I will send you a copy.
John enrolled with the Railway Pioneer Regiment on Wednesday the 9th January 1901 at Cape Town... he was 35 years old, a Miner and had served in the Home Volunteers for 24 months before leaving home. You will be pleased to know that on leaving the Home Volunteers his character is recorded as good!
He left the Railway Pioneer Regiment after serving his time, he had extended his service as you will see on his form, and returned home to his wife Lucy at Station Road, Cairn Brea. He date of discharge was Thursday 12th June 1902. He had served 1 Year and 155 Days. Even better news is that his character on discharge was Very Good..
With regards to the 3rd Battalion it appears that he was moved to the 1st Batt 'C' Company.
I checked the list of casualties (TNA WO 108/338) and there is no record of him.
I hope this is of some interest and as I said drop me an email and I will send you his enrolment form.
Regards, Malcolm
