I've just discovered that my gg-grandfather Frederick G Brunnen died during the Boer War. He was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire in 1868 and on my g-grandmother's birth certificate he is a "seargent in the Royal Engineers" I've found his name on the Brompton Barracks South African Memorial Arch as one of the fallen between 1899 and 1902.
And in the 1901 census his wife is a widow - so I assume he died between 1899 and then but I haven't found any records so far and I'm very new to this so not sure where to start.

Any help/advice gratefully received.

Nursing Sister Concentration Camp

I am trying to find details on my ancestor, EMMA MARIA (MARIE) CHANDLER. She was born 1868 at Alford, Lincolnshire U.K.
She left England early in 1900 to become a Nursing Sister in a Refugee Concentration Camp near Kimberley. Whilst there, she met and married GEORGE RANDLE. Family legend has him as a British Army Captain.
She had a baby who died, Emma herself died of enteric fever 16th or 17th Feb 1905 at Jagersfontein.

Emma’s obituary in the Lincoln, Rutland & Stamford Mercury dated Friday 17th March 1905 – Randle: at Jagersfontein, South Africa, Feb 17th of Malarial Fever, Emma Maria (Marie) the beloved wife of George Randle and daughter of the late J. S. Chandler, of Alford.

I know absolutely nothing about George Randle, apart that he never met Emma’s family in England. I would love to know about her marriage and her death/burial. I don’t even know which nursing organisation she belonged to.

All I have been able to find are the following 3 references in the VAB Database of the National Archives of South Africa.
With out looking at them, I do not know if they refer to Emma Maria Chandler.
Is it possible to send for copies of these records, or do they have to be viewed on site?
I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

My great great grandfather fought in the Boer War. His name was Charles Rutherford and he was born on 3 June 1876 in Berwick-upon-Tweed. I don't have any other information at all...

I am wondering if anybody can point me to where I can look online for information?

Must be online as I don't live in the UK and so can't go to the National Archives or whatever.

My great-grandmother was born 1880 in a Hospital attached to the Royal Artillery in Woolwich, London and on her birth certificate her dad's occupation is listed as Private, 46th regiment.

I would appreciate any information on the 46th regiment or any links/websites to where I could information on it.

Kings Own Scottish Borderers

Is there any where online with info on the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in the Boer War? My great grandfather was with them but I don't know his regiment number or anything. All i have is his dob 3 June 1876, b. Berwick-upon-Tweed and that his name is Charles Rutherford.

Will it be easy to find him without the regiment number even though I know he was in the Kings Own?

As far as I know the medals are awol.

can any one help trying link J W Poolman with the Boar war. I know from his WW1 join up papers he had been a BUgle major in the 1st ? KOYLI. He disapeared from the 1901 cencus with his wife as head of household, he was away in the army, and in 1916 he was invilied out of the army age 51 with severe arthoritis but it also mentions a bout of maleria that he originaly contrated in South Africa.

I am looking for information regarding my Grandfather, Edward Pritchard. He was born abt 1870 and married in Carisbrooke I.O.W. Feb 1898. His father, Thomas was a farmer but I cannot trace a birth record for Edward or Thomas, nor any definite census records. Edward's children were born in the Surrey and Kent area - Edward, John Redvers, Beatrice, Ivy, Ethel and Harold. There are possible connections in Staffordshire and Hampshire. In 1898, Edward was a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles. I believe he could have served in the Boer War but would like to know how I can check this Thanks

Could anyone please help me. I'm trying to find military details about my grandfather, William Stephen Blunsdon (sometimes spelt as Blunsden) b. 16 Aug 1877 in Wanborough, Wiltshire. I think he joined the British Army about 1894, and I was told he served in India & South Africa and was a Boer War veteran. As I live in Australia, I am not sure which sites would be best to check for his Army records. My grandfather emigrated to Australia in 1912.

Hi I am looking for information on how I would find more about my great great uncle Henry Sellars.
He was killed in the Boer war at Potgieters drift between the 5th and the 7th Feb 1900,serving in the 1st Durham light infantry, approx age would be 22 ish. I have had no luck in finding his service number and therefore his service records etc, or indeed any battallion etc.Could anyone point me in the right direction.

Family history tells that our GGgrandfather OR GGGgrandfather was in the BOER WAR and the QUEEN gave Land in CANADA ,for his service in the war.
The LAND is said where the city of QUEBEC is today. As we are not sure of his name .HOW can I obtain to see who owned that land before the city did?
What I have found perhaps their name could be either EDWARD and GEORGE REED /REID from IRELAND.
My GREATGRAND FATHER DANIEL REED was born and married and lived near MADOC and PETERSBOROUGH,

My Great Grandfather Francis West served as a Gunner in all of these battles and his Queens Medal said he served with the 75th Battery RFA, anyone who has more information on this unit or other RFA Units at these battles would be greatly appreciated, trying to put a story together of his passage and adventures in the Boer War.

I am wondering if anyone has access to any of the regimental rolls or other Boer War records. I think that one Edward TUCKER served his country during this time.

Edward TUCKER was born in Milton next Sittingbourne, Kent, sometime between 1860-1865, and seems to have lived here nearly all of his life. He worked as a bricklayer during both the 1881 Census and 1891 Census. It is thought that he died here in 1910.

Did John Flanigan enlist in any of the following regiments...?

I am desperately trying to find out whether my husband's grandfather enlisted in any of these regiments just prior to the Anglo-Boer War: the 2nd West Yorkshire, the King's Own Light Infantry, or the 1st and 4th York and Lancaster.
He was John Flanigan, born Doncaster, 1880.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could perhaps do a look up and give me an answer to this one, as my husband and I have gone round in circles for at least five years, trying to unearth the info with no success.

There are various J. Flanigans (assorted spellings of Flanigan) in the Cavalry units, but we aren't too sure whether he enlisted in a cavalry unit. My theory is that if there are no likely candidates in these infantry regiments, then chances are he was in the cavalry, after all!

I'm trying to track down information about Robert Bocking my great-grandfather. His wife Ada is noted as 'soliders wife, husband away at the front' (1901 census - Gestingthorpe, Essex). I'm may have been in the 44th Foot an Essex regiment but this is pure guesswork. I have looked at military records online but to no avail.

Hi All,
A friend of mine has in her family items a King's South Africa Medal with 2 ribbon brackets (1901 & 1902, ribbons long gone) that was with her grandmother's things.
The edge of the medal says "1712 Pte S Laverty RE Irish Fusiliers".
She has no idea who this is or how he may relate to her family. Her grandmother's name was Hannah Clamp, who married Earl Fitzgerald, and she believes was from Alabama or Arkansas. Is there anyone out there who can jump start the journey to find out more about the recipient of this medal and who his descendants might be?

first boer war, james carroll

Here's a toughy... I am told my gggrandfather, ran away from his home in Tyrone Co., Ireland when he was young (approx 1860) and was 'taken' to fight in the 1st Boer War. Can not determine if he went back to Ireland but he did end up in Philadelphia, PA, USA in 1884 where he was a stone mason. He died in 1923.
Any ideas how one would trace that? Most web sites with roll calls are for the 2nd Boer war. I have not found one for the 1st, and, if he was very young, would he have even been listed?

Hi, anyone out there actually by chance is in posession of my great grandfather's medal for the boer war or his rifle? John William Dunn?

Anyone out there able to tell me if there is a registry kept somewhere of medals and rifles for this period bought and sold in case it has left the hands of family (as i suspect it has).

I woud appreciate any help you are willing to give. Having a hard time finding my great grandfathers things relating ot the war and nobody seems to know where they have gotten to.

Hello all, I am researching my great-grandfather John Lamden who served in the Boer War. I know he was born in Barnes, Surrey, England but enlisted for the war in Montreal, Canada in 1900. He was in the 2nd Special Services Battn. R.C.R. and received the Queens Medal with three clasps: Johannesburg, Cape Colony, Orange Free State. What does that mean? I am unsure where he served (specific areas/battles?) or what he did. Can anyone help me determine this information?

Also, my great-grand uncle, William Lamden, died in the Boer War after he contracted malaria. Can anyone tell me how I can find out where in South Africa he died and what unit he served in? I have been unable to locate anything on him to date.

I greatly appreciate any help as I'm really new at searching military information. Please point me in the right direction!

My great grandfather Albert Frederick Puxty (born 1868 Ticehurst, East Sussex), served in the Boer War, his marriage licence describes him as 'late gunner, Royal Horse Artillery'. The family story is that he was a Sgt Major, although now I've found this reference to his marriage licence, I suspect this may be a myth!
Wondered if anyone else had any links to the Royal Horse Artillery in the Boer War who could give me some pointers on where to start looking for his military record? I think I need more information than this, eg his regiment, before I can search with any hope of success - is this true? How would I find out his regiment, it seems to be a bit of a needle in a haystack?!

I am looking for john jones, he was born john finan I think in london in either 1882 or 1884, he told so many untruths it is difficult to know. He told tales of guarding some rifles in a square house, and saving some villagers from an attack by a big cat, he was put into a glasshouse? awaiting court martial for deserting his post I think but was later released when the villagers told of his bravery against this animal! This supposedly occurred during the boer war,we believe he may have signed up for 22 years service as he then went to serve in ww1 with the sherwood foresters, as far as I can interpret his medal card he was discharged in about 1925.
In the sherwood foresters he was private 9594, labour corps, can anyone shed any light on this man, when he may have joined and who he served with during the boer war?
He apparantly had a bullet hole in his left arm so he could have been injured.
We believe the reason for his name change was a manslaughter charge for throwing chinese immigrants into the docks to drown because they were seen to be taking all the jobs from the english.
These occurences in limehouse tie in with the right time he may have signed up, could he have been conscripted to avoid a prison sentence maybe?

How do I find whether my maternal grandfather served in the Boer War? His name was John William Woodside and he was born on 21/5/1871. I found him serving at Fareham in Hampshire England on the 1891 UK Census. I cannot find him on the 1901 UK Census. I found where he married in 1906 in Liverpool England and I have found where he was living in 1911 in Everton. He died in 1951. Also his brother Isaac Woodside is missing in 1901. There is an Isaac Woodside on the 1901 UK Census but I think he is a cousin.

Glendinning Crawford enlisted to go to Durban, Natal on 14th Feb'1901 with the Marquess of Tullibardine's Scottish Horse. Would like any information on this subject.
Aside from the formal military side, he was supposedly the Marquess's nephew and this was the purpose for him going with the Scottish horse and not an Australian contingent. I somehow, having done a lot to our family tree I can't quite get the connection to John Stewart Murray, however I do believe there to be a formal family link.

Can anybody help me find the records of his service in the Boer war. I don't know which regt. I know he was there as my mom had the flag of his regt and other things. They were lost in the Jap Occupation of Hong Kong. He went onto HK after, and worked in the Prison service.

Attached is a picture of my Gt-Grandfather Howard John EDGLEY. The photo would have been taken in the late 1800's to early 1900's in Surrey, England. All I have been able to find out is that the Badge on the cap is similar to pictures of various Royal Fusiliers in the UK.

A great uncle of mine, Lt. T.S. Murland, later Captain, was in the IY and sailed for SA on the Galeka - his name is incorrectly spelt as T.S. Mulland - it should be Murland. I know he had a spell in hospital with what I think was TB and eventiually came home in 1902 ish. Can't find any reference to this on any sickness list. I'nm sure i'm looking in the wrong place - anyone good at trackoing down elusive bits of information?

I'm delighted to say that the reprint of Walter H. Wills' reference book "The Anglo-African Who's Who" of 1907 is now available through Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

It contains nearly 2,000 biographical entries on prominent men and women of Edwardian Africa. Its publication just five years after the end of the conflict makes it particularly useful for QSA/KSA medal entitlements and details of individuals' military service in South Africa. It contains details of over 1,200 separate medal awards.

Detail is very variable: for some entries there are dates of birth, marriages and employment or military history available, plus medal entitlements and even family bereavements; while others are much less detailed.

The status of the people listed ranges from kings and other traditional leaders down to very junior civil servants - for example, on page 327 are entries for two South African journalists, the Mayor of Bulawayo, a Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy, a Rhodesian Native Commissioner, a South African hunter and explorer, and a Member of the Cape Legislative Assembly.

I have two letters which show evidence that he was in the Second Boer War , and was wounded, at a date before 23 December 1899, returning on the troop ship Canada on22 January 1900, but unfortunately I don't know which battery he was in. I had assumed he was involved in the Battle of Colenso, but maybe I am wrong. Now I know that I have to go to Kew and try to look up records there.Thank you so much for your help.

My Grandfather, Albert Edward Clarke, served as a Gunner in the Second Boer War, 159 Battery of the Royal Artillery. He was wounded, probably at the Battle of Colenso, 15 December 1899. Does anyone know where i can find a list of wounded soldiers, or any information on individuals, please?

Hi, I am trying to trace my GGFATHER 's roots back to Britain somewhere and would appreciate some advise or assistance. My GGFather (Henry Jones) fought in the Anglo Boer War and while in South Africa met and married a local girl in March 1901. He did not return to Britain after the war and instead stayed in place called Umtata (Mthatha) where he eventually died in 1914. Unfortunately I don't have much that would assist in tracing his roots. The medals he received were lost over the years so getting any info off these medals highlighting his regiment etc. appears to be a lost cause. He would have been born in 1879 based on the age given on the death certificate issued by the St Johns Mission parrish Church. Not sure how I can use this though. Thought of looking up info on naturalisation applications, but not even sure this was a requirement then. I would appreciate any advise or assistance.

I haven't been able to find out much information on these units, which I gather operated after the Boer War. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I've found a little about him on the internet. He was commanding 3rd battalion of the DLI when he died 21 March 1901 in Kroonstad of enteric. However, I was interested in when he was awarded his D.M.G. and when his unit shipped out to South Africa? Also, the history of the 3rd Battalion during the Boer War as there is precious little information about this. Thank you for your time.

My grandfather, Michael Sculley 1870, is in the 1991 Census as a foot soldier in the 1st Batallion , Scots Guards, Wellington Barracks. He married in 1995 in Holborn. He is not at home in the 1901 Census.
Could he have been in the Boer War? Where can I find any information?

My brickwall is that of my gt grandfather, Hugh Crawford. Hugh lived in Lanarkshire Scotland and in 1899 signed up to fight in the Boer War. Hugh was never seen or heard from again. Apparently his wife received a letter stating that Hugh was MIA, presumed dead. She remarried under "sherriff's warrant" presumably to verify that her husband had been in absentia for the required 7 years. Those who knew Agnes think that Hugh set the whole thing up and took a wonderful opportunity never to have to return to the old battleaxe. However, her second husband was a wonderful man, very loving and very gentle, so Agnes must have had some redeeming qualities.
My question is how would I go about finding out what regiment Hugh may have signed on with so that I can in fact find out whether he was killed in action and if so where he might be buried.
Any help greatly appreciated

I am looking for my great grandfather, I have found his family in the 1901 census but his wife is listed as the head. I know that he was in the army and have checked the census for the barracks he would have been based at - he is not there either. I know he was a soldier with the Loyal North Lancs regiment and he was born in Lancashire - possibly preston c1868 , married 22/5/1897 and died 16/2/1953.
Is there anywhere I can search for soldiers that fought in the boer war?

Can anyone do a search of the Boer War Medal Rolls? I'm trying to find out if my g/grandfather Robert Hunt who served with one of the Scottish Regiments was issued a medal possibly for the first boer war. I found his death notice which stated he was a veteran of the "WET REVIEW" by Queen Victoria at Edinburgh in 1881. I'm not to good a the military side of family history so if anyone could piont me in the right direction I would be very grateful

Wondering if someone has the nominal or medal rolls for the 1st ILH and would be kind enough to look up my wife's g/uncle, Thomas Matthew Heagney, Trooper 2722. He was in South Africa from 1889-1902, then stayed on with the Transvaal railways, which is why he didn't receive his Queen's Medal with 2 clasps till 1921 back in Australia.

Hello All from a lovely sunny day in Johannesburg,

I am hoping that someone can assist me with my ggf's military history or at least point me in the right direction.

Walter GEORGE was born on 12 Jan 1883 in Birmingham, Warwickshire son of Harry and Elizabeth (nee Taylor) of Birmingham. Walter was a military man and was sent to South Africa in about 1905 where he married Gladys Ivy DAVY in Claremont, Cape Town. The first of his sons was born in 1910 in Wynberg, Cape Town before he was sent to Hong Kong. The only reason I know this is that my grandfather Frank William GEORGE was born on board ship in Hong Kong as per his birth certificate which I ordered from the UK. I also have a copy of his Baptismal Certificate with states that Walter's Profession was Band Corporal 1.K.O.Y.L.I. On the birth cert. it states that he was 6110 Corporal Walter GEORGE. My research has taken me to many military sites world wide but have came up empty. I have found that the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry where in South Africa in 1905 before being sent to Hong Kong in about 1910.
He must have returned to the UK as his daughter Ivy Adelaide GEORGE was born Portsmouth in 1913. Grace was born in Bramley in 1915. Leonard was born in Pontefract in 1916 and Hilda Winifred in 1918. I know that he immigrated back to South Africa in about 1920 were the rest of his children were born. By then I am sure he had retired from the Military due to bad health.

I have searched the PRO for details and have come up empty. Is there anyone who can help me find out more about my ggf's military history.

I've been told my grandfather lied about his age to enlist . He would have been approx. 11-13years old and added 5 years to his age. His parents would have bought him out once, but he ran off and re-enlisted. Is this possible? He later did enlist with
the British Army in WW1 and came to Canada after
1920. He also lied about his age to enlist in the Canadian military in WWII so he did lie about his age at times. Is there somewhere I can search for a record of his service? His name was John Strike.

Medal Ribbon

I have a puzzle which a friend in the local Family History Society thought that this group might be able to assist me with. Would very much appreciate your expertise.

My G-Grandfather John Bennett (b.1872 in Acton, Cheshire) served in the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). My G-Aunt had his war medals but I was given the clasps and ribbon that the medals were on by my Grandmother before she died. Why the medal(s) were separated from their ribbons and clasps I cannot fathom. The medal(s) that my G-Aunt had were stolen during a break-in of her home quite a number of years ago so I have no way of finding out what specific medals he was awarded as she kept no record of them.

However, I’m curious about the ribbon as it doesn't fit the description of any medals for this war that I've been able to find. Because of the clasps that are attached I initially thought it would have been the Queen's South Africa Medal but the ribbon is different from the descriptions I've read. The ribon that I have has 7 stripes; green, narrow dark blue, green, wide orange, green, narrow dark blue, green. On the ribbon are attached the battle clasps of Wittebergen, Diamond Hill and Johannesburg along with the Cape Colony state clasp.

I haven't ruled out the possibility that the ribbon doesn't belong with these clasps but would appreciate it if anyone can identify it and the medal that it belongs to.

I can attach a photo if it will help. Thanks in advance for any assistance and information you can provide.

John DUNPHY (Scotland) Railroad casualty Boer War 20 Aug 1901

Hi All.

I'd like to know where my great uncle, John DUNPHY, is buried.

John was born 11 Jun 1872 in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. He died on 20 Aug 1901 due to a railroad accident at the Droof River on 19 Aug 1901.

On 20 Aug, he left Beaufort West. He was a guard on an up train. When he didn't make it to Klipbank, his coworkers went back to look for him. He was found run over at the Droof River. It is believed he was taken to a hospital, where he died the following day.

Can anyone tell me where I might find the records of the railroad line for that area in that time period, or where I might find an account of the accident, or a notice of his burial?

Here is a little more history. John was a stationmaster at Maritsani when the war broke out. He was taken prisoner by the Boers and afterwards exchanged. He subsequently served with Baden-Powell in Mafeking until the close of the siege. I am told he was not enlisted in the British Army - at least he does not show up as one of their casualties.

He is there with lots of other soldiers.
Is this the same soldier as the one that went missing. ??

Is there anyone out there that can link them together for me Please.
I cant find any more about them. I would really need to know when they enlisted or something.
I am finding the army research rather differcult. Can you help ? Thank you.

Recently discovered an ancestor from Lanarkshire who served in the South African Constabulary from 1901-1902. I'm assuming this was the A-B War, am I correct? I have dates, but no regiment information (data was collected from US WWI draft registration card).

2. If or if not, what collections (generally) are available from National Archives?

Are there any recomended sites of the Boer War. ie to find more about uniforms & battles fought, as this must have been when I was asleep in my history lessons at school

If I had a relative in Umballa, India in 1895 who expected to be home by 1900 what line of service would he have been in. He mentions being made full corpl in a few months during 1896 and one of his friends dying in Lahore Camp. Any help would be great.

Any body with info, photo's, books, letters, stories .... etc. Even any info on the van der Walt's in Friesland / Nederland of the town Veenwouden and in South Africa. Year's before the 1600's is stil a cloud as surnames was only used from Napoleon era in 1811.

My ggreat grandfather Edward Ellis, Private. was found on the 1901 census at Whittington Barracks, South Staffs reg, near Lichfield, he was 18, and we belived he went to the Boar War.
Well he was lucky and did get home to Wednesbury, got married to Eliza Hoggnet Lloyd and had lots of kid.

What I would like is info on his army service records.
The places and battles he may have been in.

His perants were John Ellis and Mary Riley of Wednesbury.

I am trying to find information on my grandfather, Archibald Douglas Beveridge, who is listed on the 1901 census for Burnley, Lancashire as being on an army pension and having one leg. As his true age was only 16, although the census says 26, I am wondering whether he lost his leg in action. His death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, in 1957, states "Major R.A. Imp. Army".
