Hi jwlrose,
That terrific! I know my Dad disembarked at Greenock, Scotland. He served at a hospital in Croydon, Surrey
then went to Europe just after D-Day. While he was in England he married his first wife and had a daughter. I have a wedding picture that includes another Canadian but I don't know his name, it's attached to my tree if you want to take a look. I also have the day sheets I ordered from the Canadian Army that says where he went. Let me know if you would like a copy!

Regards,
April O'Hara
vvroses@charter.net (2 V's not a W)

My grandfather served in 10th FA on the European front 44-45 as well (Pte. C. O. Rose). I just spend some days looking over War Diaries at the National Archives for the unit. I'm compliling a comprehensive map of the route the unit took and am more than willing to share it when I'm done.

Looking for records of marriages of serving soldiers in RNC from 1840 to 1855. My relative Oliver Ormerod served from 1842 to 1861 before returning to Lancashire. I have his service papers but cannot find any trace of his marriage, probably in 1849-1850. Any help on this would be great.

My grandfather's brother also died WW1 at Pas de Calais. On the Commonwealth War Graves site, you can filter Canadian infantry who were buried at Aix-Noulette, the same month (even day) as your grandfather. You can use that information on collections canada to look at the CEF attestation papers by name and service number.
Most Libraries have access to Ancestry, you could then search family trees, entering details you have found.
There are also War Diaries on Collections Canada which don't list names, but will tell you what action 16th Bttn was in on the day your grandfather was killed. Using the tools I just described, I found someone who has your grandfather in his tree

My father Carl Este. DOB: December 29, 1943 was in the Army around 1971 that i know of for sure but not sure for how long before and after that year. He was stationed in Oromocto, New Brunswick, Canada. Apparently his position was in Artillery, but he was trying to get into Dentistry. He had a wife prior to my Mother, that he had 2 children with, a boy and girl who resided in New Brunswick but went back to Nova Scotia after they separated where i assume she originally resided.

Hello -

I just found that Ancestry.com is transcribing/indexing and posting the images of Canadian military pay lists: Canada, Nominal Rolls and Paylists for the Volunteer Militia, 1857-1922.

If you have an Ancestry.ca membership or an Ancestry.com worldwide membership (if you are in the USA), this is the link to the database:
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1935

If you don't have a membership, and if you are in Canada, a nearby public library probably subscribes to the Ancestry.ca databases and makes them available for searching (at the library itself, using a library computer) by library users at no cost. In the US, no-cost access to US Ancestry.com databases is often only available at the main/headquarters public library for an area/county.

In case you don't have the proper paid membership and don't wish to subscribe right now (money is tight all over), I'll search the Canada military pay list database to see if I can find anything for you. If you have names of particular soldiers, besides Constant le Marchand Lignery, that will help.

Best wishes -
Jean E. DeLauche, Missouri, USA

I am researching 3g grandfather Alexander Fraser, born 1791. He was in the 2nd battalion, 49th Foot (Princess Charlotte). In the spring of 1816 he was in Barnet, Hertfordshire, as a recruiting officer, and was discharged on 24 Sept 1816 in Canada. I would like any kind of records that are available, or where to look, or where to write, for that kind of information. About all I know of his origin is that I think he came from Invergordon, Scotland.

Regarding Oliver Payne.
I am researching the lives of three of the PAYNE brothers, all of whom were born in Blockley, Worcestershire, England and emigrated to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in the early 1900s;
•	Henry John Payne, born February 4th 1884,
•	Oliver Frank Payne, born June 10th 1886, and
•	(Charles) Harold Payne, born 1893.

Oliver’s life story has been my main focus but I am very interested in all his siblings as well. He arrived in Canada on March 17th 1911 with his older brother Henry (frequently called “Harry”). Henry initially emigrated to Canada in 1908, probably with cousin Ernest Frederick Ledbetter, but they both returned to England.

The third brother, Harold, emigrated to Canada in 1913 with two cousins, George Readman and the Ernest Frederick Ledbetter who originally went in 1908.

Oliver enlisted in the army in Calgary on October 19th 1915 and served in France where he fought as a scout/sniper in the 50th Battalion. He frequently partnered with Henry Norwest, a famous Metis sniper - one of the top three in the Allied army. Oliver returned to Calgary in April, 1919 for demobilization. He lived out his life in that city.

Oliver married Jane CLARIDGE (of Ascott-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, England) in Calgary in November, 1920, only days after she arrived in Canada with her daughter Margaret, then 7 years old. Oliver and Jane had no offspring.

Oliver died in Calgary in 1966 (aged 79).

Jane died in Calgary in 1967 (aged 81).

Margaret died in Calgary in 1985 (aged 72) and was buried in her mother’s grave in Calgary two days later.

I have much more than this and far more detail. I would be pleased to send you, or anyone else interested, a copy of my 7 page summary of Oliver’s life – with two photographs I have of him.

Regarding excellent books - Oliver is referred to in a book by Victor W. Wheeler entitled “The 50th Battalion in No Man’s Land: 50th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Alberta Regiment) CEF 1915-1919” - pages 82, 241 & 242.

If you have relatives who served in Italy, in the Canadian Army during WWII in the years 1944-1946, then these newspapers might be of interest to you. The Maple Leaf newspaper was published by the Army and has items about what was happening in Italy at the time. There are 689 issues covering the period Jan 1944 to May 1946.
The newspapers are photocopies so the text is not picked up with simple search, so you will have to bring up the issue and read the text to find stories.
(Google Newspaper Colletion)

Canadian Armed Forces
Published in Italy
The Maple Leaf - Jan 14, 1944
Canadian Army Public Relations
689 issues
Jan 14, 1944 - May 4, 1946

Link to the collection of newspapers:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MIUEjqm7qCUC&dat=1...

Just as a matter of clarification, most of the infantry units in the CEF were Battalions, not Regiments.

Ordering service files from LAC should not take too long, and the cost - usually - is reasonable, about $20 + shipping. Hiring someone to do this for you isn't really necessary. Moreover, now when someone orders a copy of a file, LAC will digitize it and put it online for everyone to access.

Unfortunately like all our age none of his children recorded the name of men in the photos. Does someone have a good website where the photos could be posted to help determine the unknowns in the photos. Thank you for the link to Frnak Dyke's book will be ordering.

116th Battalion in France - Benjamin Joseph Brown, (1891-1918)

The book "THE 116th BATTATION IN FRANCE"* may be of interest to those researching WWI/CEF ancestors who enlisted in the 180th Battalion in Ontario. CEF Canadian-based battalions were often incorporated into others once they arrived overseas.

This book describes in general detail battles of this battalion, including the one in which Private B.J. Brown was killed.

Private Benjamin Joseph Brown, Reg. #863115 was the son of Benjamin Joseph Brown, (1858-1922) & Barbara McCurry, (1858-1928) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is listed in the Honor Roll (p.99) of this publication.

* Weblink: http://archive.org/stream/116batallionfra00adjuuoft#page/n6/...

What you see in the database is only the attestation papers. Some files are online but not that many. To view the files with no details, then you need to order them through Library and Archives Canada or attend yourself to view them and look for him or hire someone to do it for you.

Danny

Hi,
My great uncle Reginald Jeffery was in the 28th company of the Canadian Forestry Corps in Ardesier. I have just found out he got married there in 1943.
I would be interested in any photos or information you may have on the Corps.
Regards
Linda Henderson
