Is there a list of British casualties?
I know this is a quite a long-shot.
I am looking into a guy "Maj.Isaac Foote of Branford"
(2nd or 3rd company)
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=11...
I am not connected with this gentleman but, I got interested
because he is buried in my ancestor's family cemetery in East Greenbush, NY.

I hope someone might be able to either confirm or debunk my theory: he may have gotten injured during the defeat, lived a few months before in fact he "died at Greenbush" (also known as Fort Crailo)

He apparently was a close family friend, maybe to Col. Kiliean van Rensselaer, they were born the same year and buried in the same cemetery.
The only info I have on Isaac is on his memorial
Anything additional will be quite helpful
Trying to find John Tibeaudo, Lieutenant Colonel in Wolfe's army; was for a short time before his death, governor of Quebec after it's fall to the British. Are there troop lists anywhere? John and his wife Anne DeBebrien died of smallpox not long after he was appointed governor.

Re: Question about Military Tactics

The previous reply to your question was colorful, but did not really answer your question. During the French and Indian War, a famous unit of rangers was raised by Captain Robert Rogers to fight hostile Indians and the French-Canadian colonists on their own terms. It was composed of American colonists who were all experienced woodsmen, hunters, and Indian fighters. Their role was to do what British regular troops could not--fight an unconventional war in rugged, heavily forested terrain. Rangers had been raised in the Colonies in previous conflicts, but their role had been largely defensive, patrolling to prevent surprise attacks on frontier settlements. Rogers Rangers operated in conjunction with the British Army, scouting ahead, protecting its flanks from enemy ambushes, and staging ambushes and raids of its own. Rogers was so successful that he was promoted to major and his command expanded to several companies.

The succinct written instructions Rogers issued to his men contained very sound principles for unconventional and covert operations. They deal with such matters as careful scouting, stealth, travelling light and fast, and always seeking to strike the enemy first, hard, and by surprise. Such ideas remain sound today, in spite of all technological change. And they are still taught today in the training program for the elite U.S. Army Rangers.

Robert Rogers was the subject of an outstanding historical novel called "Northwest Passage," written in the 1930's by Kenneth Roberts. The first part of the book was made into a movie of the same name starring Spencer Tracy during the 1940's.
There was a Stephen Dykeman who enlisted in the Prince of Wales Americsn Volunteers, a Provincial regiment during the Revolutionary War. This regiment got most of their men from Connecticut. He was in this regiment sometime before August 1777.

Regards

Injury, death, illness and lack of enlisting members can cripple a regiment. Searching neighboring state regiments in New York,Maine and Mass. may be worth checking, as I myself found answers researching ancestors Charles, James & George Whiting.

Good luck.
trebien9

What should be my next step to locate information on Stephen Dykeman/Dikeman's enlistment and time served during the F&I War?

I have found the following:
Family legend/lore has he enlisted in the French and Indian War March 23, 1762 and served with the Second Regiment of Connecticut until June 3 of that year.( Johannes Dyckman of Fort Orange and His Descendents by Marjorie Dikeman Chamberlain; Volume 1,page 80 also give family.)

However in, (1) Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich County of Fairfield and State of Connecticut by Spencer P. Mead, LL.B, 1921 page 83, states Stephen was in the 5th Company, 2nd Regiment as a private, serving in the northern campaign. (2) But in The History of Ridgefield Connecticut by George L. Rockwell, pub 1927, page 88, states that Stephen Dikeman enlisted March 23rd, 1762, Fifth Company, Captain Hobby, Second Regiment, Colonel Nathan Whitney. "It is reported he did not join his regiment."
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Ancestry.com 8/19/2011
Database: All Connecticut Soldiers, French and Indian War, 1755-62 Results

Connecticut Soldiers, French and Indian War, 1755-62
about Stephen Dikeman
Given Name: Stephen
Surname: Dikeman
Page #: 331
Location: Connecticut
Regiment: Second
Regt.Command: Whiting, Nathan Colonel & Captain
Company: Fifth
Co.Command: Hobby, Thomas Captain
Campaign Year: 1762
Source List: Pay Roll
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Connecticut Soldiers, French and Indian War, 1755-62
about Stephen Dikeman
Given Name: Stephen
Surname: Dikeman
Page #: 351
Location: Connecticut
Regiment: Whiting's Regement
Company: Capt.
Re: Question about Military Tactics

They are and were.I didnt think a lot of where my moms dad got all his "Woods Ways" he called them.He never spoke of his native American ancestry. You could see it though. And one time after he died I was helping my grandmother go through some of his things and ran across a picture of this old couple. I asked mamaw who they were ? She said Ikes mom and dad.My great grandad looked pure indian. I believe he was. Sorry, after I was drafted in basic training one day they were doing some things and as we watched I messed up.I whispered to a buddy I learned this from dad and papaw. All devil broke lose.I was in the front leaning rest quicker than you could say it with my drill SGT alternating between standing on my back to kickin me in the butt and cussin me for all he was worth. Then he put me at attention and cussed me some more.He said TRAINEE WHY IN HELL ARE YOU TALKIN WHILE IM TALKIN ????? I said I apologize drill SGT..Sincerely...Man did IT GET WORSE FROM THERE...Anyway he wanted everybody INCLUDIN MYSELF TO HEAR WHAT THE HELL I KNEW HE DIDN'T??? I said I learned this with my dad and grandad hunting and fishing as a boy. Caught more hell then asked to demonstrate my EXPURTEASE....I just showed them what I knew. Then I threw in about determining if someone had back tracked. The D.S.got real quite on that and said back trackin you damn sure cant do that trainee. i said yes sir and stayed at attention. He at eased me and told me he was REAL IMPRESSED WITH SITTIN BULLS BULL. Yeah you guessed it Sittin Bull was me from then on.And some of the guys wanted me to tell them about back tracking.I told them I would if we got a weekend pass. One of the cadre I didnt see was the only one in the bay except us.We got a weekend pass. And when we were at Co Hdqtrs waiting on a bus and the guys wanted to hear about back tracking I showed them how no matter how light footed a man is he will leave sign when he walks (broke twig, water on bush leaves some not all rest on undergrowth and even if you cant see a foot print there is depressed undergrowth and NOBODY NOT NOBODY CAN USE THE EXACT SAME TRACKS GOING BACK NOBODY CAN...And if you do hit a few tracks the tracks are bigger than originally placed.Front of a shoe is bigger than the back. And the cadre was sitting on the steps waiting on a taxi to.The drill sgt never bothered me again. So a low life dumb butt joe trainee taught a ds something he didn't know.So thanks pop and papaw.

I think that my grandfathers WALTER DAVIDSON and JOHN CHARLTON served in the Virginia Militia with CPT William Preston as their Company Commander and George Washington as their Battallion Commander ? And I also believe WILLIAM DAVIDSON who was killed at the battle of Drapers Meadows was either Walter Davidsons dad or brother one ? Wasnt Drapers Meadows on what is part of the campus of Virginia Tech today ? Also, just one more (Scouts Honor) I think that JAMES BURNS who soldiered with them was the same James Burns who was the husband of MARY PRESTON could be wrong on Preston (One thing that makes me think I'm right is she was everywhere William Preston was from ST. Marys Co MD to VA and one time in the Radford Library,Radford,VA with the best friend I ever had Mike Frazier absent from the body but present with the Lord we found a letter of Col.Prestons and he spoke of my dear sister Mary) I may be wrong.James and Mary married in PR W CO VA Manassas,VA.He died in Winchester,VA area and she married Walter Davidson. There son William Davidson married Elizabeth Charlton in MTG CO VA daughter of John and Elizabeth Robinson Charlton. The Prestons,Davidsons,Charltons,Craigs were always in the same area together. If they werent related they were the best friends God ever made.I know from experience the guys I served with during the Vietnam War were closer to me than my own brothers.Sadly some of them are absent today but we were still brothers from another mother.Sorry ya'll I digress and asked way to many questions.Any answers are appreciated.

My 5th g.grandfather, Murdock McKenzie, born abt. 1735 in Scotland, served with the Guides & Pioneers Regiment of the British Army during the American Revolution and removed to Nova Scotia/New Brunswick after the war. Other information found recently indicates there was a Murdock McKenzie who served in the Colonel's Company of the 78th Fraser Highlanders during the Seven Years War, then returned to Scotland with others when the Regiment was discharged in 1763. There is a possibility that after the birth of his daughter, Ann, in abt. 1772, Murdock returned to North America, probably New York, and subsquently joined the Guides & Pioneers Regiment. Any information relating to Murdock and the 78th Fraser Highlanders, or his wife, will be most appreciated. Murdock's daughter, Ann McKenzie, married James Pratt, a veteran of the New Jersey Volunteers in about 1787.

I am seeking more information about what company or companies would have been referred to as "Connecticut Volunteer Riflemen". My ancestor, Amon Canfield, was possibly a captain of one of these companies. I have been told through family tradition that he was on the Battle of the Plains of Abraham and would like to know if there is a listing of companies who participated in that famous battle as well. It appears that many records for specific areas in Connecticut were destroyed which detail the time periods prior to the Revolutionary War. Because of this, I have had some difficulty with verifying this particular history of my ancestor. What resources might be available? Thank you for your help.
-Marjorie

Little Colonial-era military material is available on the internet. What there is depends greatly on:

Where folks lived
When and where they served

If you post a detailed question about each one in a message board for the right residence (e.g., UK, US?) and time period (This board is about French and Indian War, 1755-1763), perhaps someone can help you with book resources.

Or you could post queries on the relevant surname message boards, or on boards for the locality in which each resided.
What you posted is not a document, it is a transcript of something published in a book.

Locate the book and look in the introduction to see what the source is, then get a copy of the original document. It may tell you more, such as whether the Company was in the Virginia Regiment or was a militia unit raised temporarily.

While you are looking at the book, be sure to write down author, title, publication data.

Often members of one Company were from the same geographic area of residence, but this was not true for 1754-mid 1755 when there was considerable recruitment for specific campaigns.
I believe I have found my ggggg grandfather on a French and Indian War enlistment roster. Of course all they have on there is his name, what company he was in and that it was in the colony of Virginia. I can't find any information in the National Archives regarding French & Indian War enlistment. I was hoping that I may be able to get more information to be able to determine if this is my ancestor.

Am I looking in the wrong place? Should I be looking in the British military archives or would they even have it available. Does anyone know how I could get more information?
I went ahead and attached the document I found from ancestery.com. My person of interest is Edward Swanson and he is on the payroll of CAPT. Spotswood's Company, 16 October, 1755.
It's unfortuneate that no muster rolls or payrolls survive. Do you know of any other documentation that could prove his service? He was from Pennsylvania at the time.

Mother was Margaret Hamilton nee Elliot.
Margaret remarried to Thomas Hunt about 1844 so am unsure if William senior had died by then or they were divorced.
I think I found William senior living at Army Barracks 1841 in Glasgow but cannot be sure it was him.
I live in Australia so cannot access the records at Kew. I have been unable to find any BMD's on Scotlands People.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Muster rolls and payrolls do not survive for Braddock's Defeat, 9 July 1755 and the surrounding events/period. However, Robert Walters is listed in payrolls for the Virginia Regiment before and after the events, and it appears likely that he went on this expedition.

You will want to correct your timeline as to when he was in Capt. Lewis' Company.

Murtie June Clark, in /Colonial Soldiers of the South, 1732-1774/ provides a calendar of documents from the 4th Series of George Washington's Papers that include the 1754-1758 period. These papers, and the documents listed below, can be found on the Library of Congress American Memory web site. The Series:Volume numbers are given in brackets.

Robert Walter is on a Feb 1755 payroll of Capt. Thos. Waggener's Co. [4:1]

Robert Walters is on a Jan. 1756 subsistence payroll, Capt. Thos. Waggener's Co. [4:2]

Robert Walter is on a payroll for July-Aug 1756, Capt. Thos. Cocke's Co. [4:4]

Robert Walters is on a size roll, Capt. Thos. Cocke's Co., 13 July 1756, which states he was age 22, 5'7" tall, from Scotland, a planter, and enlisted in the VA Regiment in Jan. 1755. [4:4]

Robert Walter is on a Dec. 1756 Receipt Roll, Capt. Thos. Cocke's Co. [4:5]

Robert Walters is on a July 1757 Size Roll for the 7th Co., VA Regt., Capt. Joshua Lewis' Co. [4:6]. It has the same data as in the Size Roll for Capt. Waggener's Co., except that in Ms. Clark's transcript the enlistment date of Jan. 1754 is given, instead of 1755. Since Walters is not among the extensive lists in 1754 for events surrounding the Great Meadows expedition, it appears very likely that his enlistment was in Jan. 1755 rather than 1754.

Robert Walters is on a July 1757 Necessary Roll for the 7th Co. of the VA Regiment in Capt. Joshua Lewis' Co., and a similar roll for the same Company for Oct. 1757. [4:6].

Robert Walters is on a Sep 1757 Return of Necessaries, 7th Co., VA Regiment, Capt. Joshua Lewis' Co. [4:6]

Capt. Joshua Lewis' Co. was on a 1 Oct 1757 Return of the VA Regt. at Ft. Loudoun (men not itemized except those sick, killed and deserted). [4:6]

(Joshua Lewis was promoted to Major, then took over Capt. Peter Hogg's Co.)

Robert Walters is on a list of men belonging to the First VA Regt. that were killed while in the last Action near Fort duQuesne, Sept. 14, 1758. He had been in Capt. Bullitt's Co. [4:9]

Good hunting,
Jade
Hello
I'm looking for info on a member of the 77th Highland Regiment who fought in the colonies during the French-Indian Wars. I think he stayed afterwards and settled in either New York or New Jersey. His name was Daniel (or Donald) Munro and he was born in Argyll, Scotland in 1738 and married Mary Polly Boyle. They later settled in Nova Scotia. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Source: 'Soldiers in King Philip's War'

Among those who participated in the Turners Falls Fight during King Philip's War were: Thomas Wells of Hadley; and, Jonathan Wells of Hadley. Neither was listed as a casualty so apparently they survived the fight.

Hi Merkel -

I think you'll probably have better luck looking through the family (surname) forums. With this post, you will mainly be seen by those looking for or having information about the troops, so it would only be a coincidence if you found someone with info about your ancestor.

List of Soldiers assigned under George Washington

My Great(4) grandfather was born in and around 1765 in Claiborne, Mississippi. At that time it was still under Spanish rule. His father named him George Washington Jones. I'm thinking that was a rather unusual name combination even back then. So, that led me to think that maybe he was named for someone his father admired, maybe even a commander or even a buddy or something like that.
I don't have GW Jone's father's name or where he is from. GW's wife was named Eve and she was born in Virginia. Maybe there are family ties to Colonial Virginia?
