It would have helped to have his name but you should find his record online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/our-online-record...

WWI medals roll for RN are not on Ancestry but in document series ADM 171 at the National Archives, the roll is divided alphabetically by surname groups and each section is available to download free of charge - search discovery on above site for ADM 171

Service number

Hi, Quite a newbie to the family tree research but finding it very interesting and addictive so far.
Trying to find a Great Grand father, who was in the Navy 1912-1921 when he died at aged 37.'due to illness'. I have his Service Number but it doesn't seem to be recognised in any searches. Does the category 'Military include all the Armed Forces?. I would have thought a Service number was unique to the person?

Re: Service number

You might like to see the attached website explaining how navy numbers evolved. The correct term by 1912 is 'Official number', but I doubt that is really material here.

As with anything associated with genealogy, it is not as simple as you might hope.

Ancestry has both navy and army records in it.

The site below says the navy used 6 digit numbers from 1894, adding a letter prefix in 1908. So, presumably your number should be a letter followed by 6 numbers.

The army tended to use 4 or 5 digit regimental numbers which could be repeated many times across different regiments. In 1917 the Territorials introduced a 6 digit number, without the letter prefix used by the navy.

So, it depends if you have the prefix letter or not. If you do not have a prefix letter, there could be the same number used in the Territorials.

However, the record that comes up SHOULD clearly show if the person shown is navy or army. Once the record is looked at, it should not be in doubt. I am not sure if navy records were included in the losses caused by the blitz.

I suggest trying the search in variable ways, ie, adding or subtracting the various prefixes.

You might be able to determine his role by reference to the website.

http://www.godfreydykes.info/ROYAL%20NAVY%20OFFICIAL%20NUMBE...
Hello again, was Richard awarded any medals for his service? I have had a quick look on the Imperial war Museum website although found nothing. Could you send through the documents of Joseph Brown? I have not found record of his parents so my family tree begins (or ends?) at him for that line. My grandmother has no memory of her father Richard so any information is new to us, I look forward to hearing from you again.

Hello Emily,I'm on a voyage of discovery here.In WW1 Richard served with the Oxfordshire and Buckingham Light Infantry in Ahmednagar, India. Under command of 17th Indian Brigade of 6th (Poona) Division, Indian Army. I've also found out that later he was indeed a police officer while serving with the S.T.C. and I am trying to gain verification about his death. I am also in the process of scanning several recently discovered photos and documents including a charming picture of my aunt Lenella in a sari and a real surprise - a photo of Richard's brother; Edward! Finally,I have a document that describes Joseph Brown as an Apothecary with the Indian Medical Dept. You can find more about the I.M.D from the Imperial War Museum website here in the UK. It is very interesting!
Please keep in touch. My best wishes to you and your family.
Hi, my grandmother was very happy to hear you had made contact with us. I have this ww1 medal card with Richards name on it although he is listed as serving for oxfordshire, and as working for Bangalore Police Force although the station he lists as his posting closed a few years before the date of the record, and I can't find any more records of military service. I have attached a copy of this record to this message, would you be able to send me a copy of the photos you have please?

Hello again Emily,
My sincere regards to your grandmother, my aunt. I too know little about Capt. Joseph IMD. When I read more about those nominals though it appeared that the IMD was for the treatment of Indian Nationals only. I wonder why? A similar mystery is what the STC were as I found an article implying that they acted in a policing role. I am in the process of gathering as many old photos as possible. I know that they include a picture of Richard Burleigh Lowe Brown and one of Olga in a sari. Also, Charles and Kenneth together in the 1960's.

Yes we are related. Richard Berley is my great grandfather, I have found him under both spellings of his name but I have not much information on Captain Joseph Brown. My grandmother (Daphne Rankin b. brown) has no memory of a second home though. it is good to hear from new found family :)

Hello Emily,
I think we are related. Richard Berley Lowe Brown of Bangalore was my Grandfather. He and Linella Mary Swasbrook had daughters who emigrated to Australia and two sons who emigrated to the UK when India gained independence. I am one of their sons. I always got the impression that Captain Joseph Brown had a medical background, perhaps with Scottish origins, and that the family enjoyed the colonial life, living in Bangalore with a 2nd home in the Nilgiris Mountains. I have found that 'Berley' has variations and you may discover more by trying 'Berlie' Lowe Brown. I am delighted to find a family member and wish you well.
Christopher Brown
Thankyou, you're welcome, and I think that it's useful and desirable to preserve and document such interesting snippets of history.

If you succeed in finding the regimental records and war diary they will probably make very interesting reading.

He certainly experienced some fascinating times and historical events.

Perhaps the events of the Indian Mutiny may have contributed to his promotion to the Colonelcy of the regiment.

*********************************************
I forgot to mention that the previously attached document is from the East India Register & Army List 1855.

It apparently says that he was commissioned into either
the British, or the British Indian Army in 1825.

That sounds reasonable when compared to the 1805 birth date given for him above in his newspaper obituary, which suggests that he was about 20 when he was commissioned.

The other details in the obituary match well with the following information.

I have him on 3 consecutive censuses in Scotland, post retirement, 1861, 1871, and 1881, and it's definitely him.

I also have a possible mention of him in...
The India office and Burma office list 1864, on page 56.

BENGAL RETIRED OFFICERS

1825 Mackenzie, Lt. Col. H., 15th Dec. 1859

Which once again matches well with the Obit and census, and army list information, with one exception.

In all 3 censuses his Surname is spelled as McKenzie, not a problem, it's clearly him.

The problem is that in all of the censuses his year of birth is given as 1816, and if he was commissioned in 1825 he can't have been commissioned at the age of 8. !

Since in 1881 he had a 27 year old wife to whom he had probably been married to for at least 3 years, judging by the age of his 3 year old son, I at first suspected that he might have understated his true age by about 10 years in connection with a courtship.

Obviously a frisky old boy, whatever his true age was.

However he is also listed on the 1861 census as having been born in 1816, so that theory doesn't appear to be correct.

There are only 2 other possible explanations that I can think of, both of which may be wrong.

Firstly that the age given in the newspaper Obituary was wrong, which seems unlikely since all of the other obituary details are correct and are confirmed by the information on the 3 censuses.

BTW - Re all the locations mentioned, check them on a map, they're all pretty close to each other and they all match the location information given in the obituary.

Secondly, that there were 2 people, ( possibly related ), both called Hugh Mackenzie, who both served in the same regiment in the same era.

I'll leave you to figure that all out.

***************************************************
1861 census 7th April 1861

Piece: 799 Folio: 1 Page: 20
Registration District: Melrose
Civil Parish: Melrose
Address: St Dunstanes, Melrose
County: Roxburghshire

MCKENZIE, Hugh Head Widower 45	1816 Rosekeen, Ross and Cromarty

Lieut Col H C Army Reo Sert - ( exact transcription quote ) Reo is probably Retired
can't figure out what the rest might mean.

MCKENZIE, Mary J Daughter Unmarried 15 1846 England Scholar

MCKENZIE, Sarah A	Daughter Unmarried 7 1854 India Calcutta Scholar

WEARS, Margt Servant Unmarried 43 1818	Domestic Servant Montrose, Forfarshire (Angus)

MATHISON, Elisabeth	Servant Unmarried 27 1834 Domestic Servant Selkirkshire

*******************************************
1871 census 2nd April 1871

Piece: 70 Folio: 2 Page: 11
Registration District: Kiltearn
Civil Parish: Kiltearn
Address: Fowlis Mains, Kiltearn
County: Ross and Cromarty

MCKENZIE, Hugh Head Widower 55 1816 Lieut Colonel Late B Bengal Army Retired Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty

CAMPBELL, Isabella Servant	Unmarried 48 1823	Cook Knoidart, Invernessshire

ROSS, Annie Servant	Unmarried 22 1849	Housemaid	Kilmorack, Invernessshire

***********************************************
1881 census 3rd April 1881

Piece: 137 Folio: 8 Page: 30
Registration District: Forres
Civil Parish: Forres
Address: Park Mount Randolph Villa, Forres
County: Moray

MCKENZIE, Hugh	Head	Married 65	1816	Lt Col Retired	Rosskeen, Rossshire

MCKENZIE, Edith S B	Wife	Married	F	27	1854	England

MCKENZIE, Hugh G F	Son 3	1878	Forres, Moray

SMITH, Elizabeth	Servant	Unmarried	23	1858	Domestic Servt Cook	Forres, Moray

LAING, Mary Servant	Unmarried	21	1860	Domestic Servt House Maid	Forres, Moray

BARIN, Agnes Servant	Unmarried	16	1865	Domestic Servt Nurse	Keith, Banffshire

**************************************************
Randolph Villa still existed up to at least 1993.

It's moodern address was, and possibly still is.

RANDOLPH VILLA
37 ST LEONARDS ROAD
FORRES
IV36 1DW

It was offered for sale in 1871.

Inverness Advertiser Friday, 17th November 1871

Forres - Randolph Villa, for sale

***************************************************
Curiously it still had a military connection in 1915.

Robert Peat Hamilton Pte 29555 16th Canadian Inf (Manitoba Regt) born Forres 16/08/1881 enlisted Valcartier Age 33

Killed in Action F & Mackenzie or Mckenzie born England circa 1846.

2 points, firstly census dates and ages are often approximations and can be out by a year or two.

Secondly, births were registered by the quarter of the year in which the birth was registered and parents had 6 weeks in which to register a birth so a birth in one quarter might not be registered until the following quarter and if the birth took place near the end of the year it might not be registered until the first quarter of the following year.

*************************************
Searching between 1844 and 1848, there are three possible birth registrations, 2 in England and one in Poona in India, a military birth registration.

You can get English birth certs from the local registration offices, or from the UK GRO = General Register Office.

The local offices will probably be quicker, but military/Indian birth certs can only be obtained from the GRO

In either case, the local offices or the GRO should be able to eliminate the incorrect cert based on the parent's names and occupations and they probably won't charge a fe for the incorrect certs, nor hopefully will they charge a search fee.

***********************************
Civil registration event: Birth
Name:MACKENZIE, Mary Jannet
Registration district: Kensington
County:London
Year of registration:1845
Quarter of registration:Jul-Aug-Sep
Mother's maiden name:Not available before 1911on birth registration summaries,
but will be listed on the birth cert.
Volume no: III
Page no: 316

http://www.rbkc.gov.uk/communityandlocallife/registrarsservi...

*****************************************************

Civil registration event: Birth
Name:MCKENZIE, Mary Jane
Registration district: Maldon
County:Essex
Year of registration:1845
Quarter of registration:Apr-May-Jun
Mother's maiden name:Not available before 1911
Volume no: 12
Page no: 158

Maldon registers are now held by Essex, Chelmsford.

http://www.essex.gov.uk/Births%20Ceremonies%20Deaths/Pages/O...

http://www.essex.gov.uk/Births%20Ceremonies%20Deaths/Births/...

*****************************************************
Registration event: Birth
Name:MCKENZIE, Mary J
Mother's name: Not available before 1966 on the registration
summary but will be listed on the birth cert.
Regiment: 22nd Foot ( different regiment, but Hugh didn't
join the Bombay regiment until later )
Place :Poona
Country:Indian Subcontinent
Year:1848
Volume : 915
Page: 77
Record source: GRO Regimental Birth Indices (1761 to 1924)

*********************************************************
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/fees.asp

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customer...

*****************************************
No sign of wife Edith in 1891, remarried perhaps. ?

However, could this be son Hugh G.F. listed as Hugh G.T., a boarder at a private school. ?

1891 census

Piece: 467
Folio: 2
Page: 22
Registration District: Dollar
Civil Parish: Dollar
Address: Burnside House, Dollar
County: Clackmannanshire

MCKENZIE, Hugh G T	Boarder aged 13 Scholar	born 1878 in Forres, Moray

Captain Hugh MACKENZIE, 2nd European Regiment, Bengal Army

I am looking to locate a relative, Captain Hugh Mackenzie of the 2nd european regiment, Bengal Army. We have him down as enlisting 1825 and many articles from newspapers up until 1850 or so. We know his wife and childrens name but are looking to find more information on his time with the army and hopefully a date of birth so that we can trace our family further. We arent sure whether he was born in Scotland and joined the British Army first or whether he was born in India to a british family. We have potential parents but no links as yet. We have searched all records possible with absolutely no trace of him or his wife pre the 2nd european regiment. Any suggestions on where I may look? Many thanks

This may have gone through twice - computer seems to be misbehaving. Suggested you contact the National Shooting Centre at Bisley. I have about 40 of these spoons, they were often given for top score at each range, so there could be a set of six for one competition, rare occurrence to get all six. I also have enough tankards to run a pub, c. 75 sew-on, stick-on badges, silver cups etc. etc. Unfortunately target shooting is not a spectator sport so if there is no personal interest they are simply not wanted. However I would be surprised if Bisley could not identify it for you. Good luck

Hi, I hope someone can help me.
I have found a wedding announcement for my great-grandparents wedding. In the announcement my 2nd great grandfather is named:
Capt. Joseph Brown, I.M.D., Retd
and my great-grandfathes name as:
Staff-Sergeant Richard Berley Lowe Brown, S.T.C.

I don't know much about these two men as my grandmother had never met them, they were from India under British Rule and I do know that Richard has a military background. I have googled the post nominals but I can't find anything. Is anyone able to help me by telling me what they mean or stand for?? Or possibly point me in the right direction?

I have attached a copy of the marriage announcement as well

Thanks in advance,
Emily

It could be a personal prize from a Regimental or perhaps Army or Inter Service Shooting Championships.
The obvious contact is the Guards Museum to see if they can shed any light on it, but I suggest you write to them and send pictures of both sides of the spoon and close-ups of any detail. If you know his service number and rank mention that in the letter.

Although service records of men who served after 1923 are with the MoD, the Coldstream Guards HQ may have some information or even a duplicate service record for him, write to:

Regimental Archivist
RHQ Grenadier/Coldstream/Scots/Irish/Welsh (select as appropriate) Guards
Wellington Barracks
Birdcage Walk
London SW1E 6HQ
Bisley Shooting Prize

I have a silver teaspoon that was apparently won by my Dad as a shooting prize at Bisley during the 1920s-1930s. He was in the Coldstream Guards at the time. The spoon is very ornate, with the end of the handle showing a shooting target over a powder horn with a crown and crossed rifles above, all surrounded by a laurel leaf. There is more patterning along the handle.
Does anyone know how (or if) I can find out when this prize was won and what level of prize it represents?

Wow, it's great that you have his letters.

The UK National Archives at Kew have a partial muster roll for the Hompesch hussars from 1799 which may contain details on your ancestor. The reference for the record is WO 12/11742:

http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=...

The next time I'm in the London area I hope to visit the archives and will try to check the Hessian records.

I believe there are also records at the German state archives concerning the Hessians but I have not looked into this in detail yet.

The best of luck with your research,

Shane

Paul - I found this re:Frank Withers Snr. I believe it matches up to your info: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=46...

The Commonwealth War Graves website is very good for searching casualties and you can find out where they are buried. If I loose track of a relative and they were of age during one of the wars I always check this site. Sometimes, for obvious reasons, there is not much info.

Hope this helps
Sara
