Andrew, I have just stumbled across this thread from 2008, and it sparks an interest in an ancestor from Bavaria. Family history indicates he served in the Bavarian forces in the war, and we have a poor photocopy of a discharge certificate for him which mentions a citation. Can you find any record of a George A Hertlein, born in 1849 in Arnshochstadt, Neustadt a.Aisch, Bavaria, having been awarded a citation for service?
