Hi Andy- My great grandfather was Gutav Adolf Schubert. he was severely wounded in the Franco-Prussian War. My father describes a gold medal with a cross, translated text on it is 'God goes with him' or 'God is with him'. This could be a service award or a medal for being wounded. Others in the family think it is an iron cross.
