My great-grandfather ran away from home in app. 1890 to join the German navy. He lived in Thuringia, which I believe was part of Prussia. We have a great photo of him in his uniform. Does anyone know a source who could help me identify the uniform -- rank, etc? Thanks -- Pat Emslie

Crewmembers on German submarine U-2359

I am looking for survived crewmembers or ancestors of them on the German submarine type XXIII U-2359, that was sunk by British Mosqiuto-fighters on the 2. May 1945 in Kattegat, east of Laessoe(Læsø), Denmark, Scandinavia.

The U-boot has resently been located on deep water, and I am trying to find out wether the official reports, which declares all crewmembers dead, are true. According to the pilots, there were dinghies and survivors in the water. What I dont know for sure is if any of the crew made it to either the coast of Denmark or Sweden, or if they passed away in the cold water(RIP).

If you have any information either to confirm the official reports or to correct it, please let me know, and help solve the mystery about this unique submarine.

The crewmembers were

Gustav-Hinrich Bischoff 11.05.1916
Frohmut Goldschmidt 01.02.1922
Bernhard Bierwald 04.07.1923
Helmut schlecht 16.06.1924
Georg Däumling 07.08.1917
Dieter Deil 14.02.1924
Helmut-Kurt Fiebiger 19.04.1919
Günther Gerlach 17.09.1922
Georg Henslok 06.08.1916
Heinz Hiepe 03.12.1918
Horst Mielewczyk 10.08.1925
W.
2 German soldiers from Guntersleben, Bavaria - WW2 - where to find records

I have 2 possible relatives from the town of GUntersleben in Bavaria (near (Wurzeburg) listed on a wall of German soldiers in the Catholic Church in that town who died in WW2. THeir names are Oswald Rothenhofer and Franz Rothenhofer. Oswald's dates are Oct. 12, 1922 and died Aug. , 1942. Franz' dates are Oct. 28, 1909 and died July 1, 1944. I wrote to teh Deutschedienststelle (WASt) in Berlin and their reply is that I have to prove that I am and how I am related to them. But, that's what I'm trying to find out -- if they are possible relatives to my Lorenz Rothenhofer who was born in this town on Dec. 15, 1815. Any help would be most appreciated.

Does anyone know if I can get german military records. My grandfather was a german soldier during WWII, he was born in Ridjica (former Yugoslavia) in 1914, at the end of the war he was captured by the Russians, and was held somewhere in ussr until 1951. I did not know him (I met him once) because my grandmother had remarried. But I would like to know where he was held, and about his service in the german military. If anyone knows where I can get this info. I would appreciate it.
thank you.

Question, and please, if it sounds stupid, forgive my ignorance. I have a relative that was a "barber surgeon". Would he be wearing the same type of uniform as the other infantry men? Next, if he was from Bavaria, could/would he be sent where he was needed, or stay in Bavaria? How would a Bavarian end up with his picture taken in Prussia? If anyone could help me with this, I would appreciate it. Marcia

Prussian Cavalry Unit stationed at Thorn

I have a pipe which belonged to my family. The Pipe has two bowls, 1 for tobacco and the other, I was told, for water. On each bowl there was German Script, and very beautiful paintings. I had the writing translated, and since I have been trying to find more information on this unit and the identity of my family member. I have listed below, the translation for both bowls. The family name is "Bleich". I noticed on one bowl the spelling is "Bleich" and on the other bowl, it is written "Bleisch". There is also a list of the other reservists who served in Thorn at this time. I have attached to this message two "jpeg" files listing the other names.

I hope this helps someone who is searching for military information on a relative.

John Bleich
Otto von Oettingen was born 1880. He married Ruby Barrett (my relative) in 1914 and died in 1917. He served in the Prussian infantry Regiment, no. 135, but I do not know whether he was still serving at his death, nor what the regiment's movements were during 1914-17. They had one daughter, and Ruby was still alive in the early 1960s.

I would be grateful for any pointers to establishing more of this story.

Thank you

Graham Simons

What are the significance of the medals on his chest?

Christian Friedrich Weyer was born 3/19/1841 in Grünow by Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Preußen. He and his wife and child emmigrated to Michigan, USA in 1869 so the photo had to be taken prior to that. He lived in Drense, Brandenburg, Preußen at the time he emmigrated.

I appreciate any help.
Bill
Information about German WW2 presentation wristwatch

Have had this watch for about a year now, have always wondered who this was presented to. Inscription reads: Für Bestleistungen dem Unteroffizier Friedrich Müller verliehen. 3.(Techn.) Kompanie Flzgf.Sch.(C)2, Neuruppin. Think this translate along the lines of "Award for best acheivement to Freidrich Müller. Flying School C2 Neuruppin". Neuruppin was a training school during the war, have tried to research the name but Friedrich Müller is a popular name in german. There is a very famous pilot Friedrich Karl Müller, but seem a very long shot that this was his watch. Can any one help in identifying its original owner.
Many thanks Simon Farrow

I am looking for information about my father, Helmut E. Blank. He was a Captain in the Luftwaffe 1939-1945. I would especially like a photograph, since I never knew him. He is not buried in a military cemetery--I have checked. Does Germany keep a names registry of civil graves? (I assume he is dead--he would be 95 years old). Is there any way of finding out what happened to him after the war? I have contacted WAST and the German Red Cross and am waiting for their response. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

It was fantastic. While I was getting a tour of the little town they live in, Kleinkarlbach, I was shown a monument on the lawn of the Protestant church. It had listed two of my ancestors on it. ((I have attached images)) I want to know how I can start to research the details of their service, what branch, what rank, where did they see action, etc... Any and all help is appreciated. Here are the names, and please take a look at the pictures to see dates and other information that may help

Jack

German Military 1880 - Weber

My great grandfather, Stefan Weber, was in the German Military but I don't know what unit. He was born in Dec 1856 and lived in Elchingen, Jagst kreis, Württemberg so was probably in a unit near there (?) or Stuttgart or possibly Ulm? I don't know how long military service was during this period but pretty sure he was in the army still during 1880 and part of 1881 but have no idea when he joined. Can someone help me with this? In 1881 he immigrated to the US, first having to denounce Kaiser Wilhelm. Thereafter he had no contact with his family in Germany, as far as I know. Thanks for any help received

Steven Brent
Dear members,
I am trying to identify the corps/unit, rank and medal of my grandfather Alfred Bock. He later resided in Berlin.
The photo attached is in black Attila (Imperial Hussar Cavalry?) and the medal is aiming towards The Legion of Honour (originated in France) (bravery). I have read that this medal was only given to one officer once a month via consideration of higher ranks. When did this uniform cease to be? was it 1914? Can anyone identify the shoulder boards and his 3 (pips) on the braided collar.

Much appreciated
Rosalie Bock
Sydney Australia

Does anyone have any information on the Muschkat family from Hungary/Yugoslavia. My grandfather was born in Ridjica in 1914, his name was Lorinc Muschkat (Lorenz in german) he served in the german army and was captured at the end of wwII. He was held until 1951 in USSR. I met him one time and know very little about his family. I know his father was imprisoned before WWII. I have already searched the FHL microfilm and Ridjica, but wondered if there were prison records for civil crimes as well as if there were records for POW's in the USSR.
Any help would be appreciated.
WWI Baltic Sea Adventure

Hello : )

I am researching an event experienced by my 2nd great grandfather, George BANNISTER, in the area of the Baltic Sea during WWI. I am hoping that researchers with more exprience in this area might be able to put me on a fruitful path.

George BANNISTER lived in England and, according to a couple of family histories passed down, led a sea-going occupation, with the title of donkeyman, working on ships' engines. I am told that, as a donkeyman, he would have been working aboard a merchant vessel rather than a ship of the Royal Navy. I am aware that merchant vessels were commissioned for service during the war, but have been unable to pinpoint George's ship.

Some time before 25 Jan 1916, according to one history, George was aboard a ship which was "held in the Baltic Sea by the German Navy during WWI".

The crew abandoned ship at St. Petersburg, Russia and crossed the Baltic Sea on a sled. They crossed Sweden and Norway and found a small ship which crossed the North Sea to bring them back to the English coast.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about tracking down which ship George was on and where any documentation of this event might be found?

Thanks for your time! :)

Tygger
California, USA

Hello.. Could someone please help with this photo of my great grandfather, Marion Bernard Pittroff, born 1861 in Danzig. It's always been understood that he was a musician in the army, but we cannot find any proof. It's a toss-up between being an officer and being a sergeant. My family and I are at a complete standstill with him. I have ZERO information on his parents and/or siblings. He came to USA about 1890, but don't know where exactly. He died in Paterson New Jersey in 1943 (of what is unknown). Thanks in advance for any help. Sincerely, Stephanie Whitehurst Pack
Great Grandfather in What Uniform?

Hello all.. could someone help with this photo of my great grandfather, Marion Bernard Pittroff, born 1861 in Danzig.

My illustrious ancestor apparently emigrated to the USA in 1866 or 67 to avoid conscription. How was conscription done? I doubt there was a draft board, so how did they conscript? Sweep the streets or drag them out of their homes? Was there any way to stop someone from leaving the country by denying a passport, stopping you at the ship dock, etc? If you wanted to leave the country, how would you do it? [my ancestor was from Schleswig, and ordinarily would have gone from Hamburg]

Looking for information about my ancestor Ludwig Heise born between 1780 and 1790. Married 1818 in Neuenkirchen, Amt Damme. His name has also been recorded as "de Heise" and "von Heise".

According to a marriage register of 1814 he was a Wachtmeister in the Husarenregiment of Cumberland. On another document we find him in the Hannoversche Corps in 1815, rank of Lieutenant..

Two questions -

Were both these units part of what's known as the King's German Legion? Any tips on where I can learn more about these military units?

And is there any way I can find more data about him from any military records that may be available? We know where he was married in 1818, but no hometown was listed for him and we do not find him in Catholic Church records of his marriage town going back to the 1760s.

Thanks,
Courtenay

Looking for Records for Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr.8, 1903-1907

Hello,

I am trying to locate military information on my great-grandfather and would like to get some advice on my best method for proceeding. I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the subject.

Known facts about my great-grandfather:
Born in Rheinland in 1883. (I can not confirm a birthplace, hence my desire to find military records)
Served in Metz from 1903 – 1907 in the Artillery.
(I have more biographical data, but not that pertains to this military inquiry, per se.)

From the Garrison Maps I’ve found for this time period chances are very good this puts him in the Rheinisches Fußartillerie-Regiment Nr.8. Since the other Artillery Regiments in Metz during this time seem to be from the 16th Army Corps.

In the least I’d like to prove that he was part of this regiment. At best I’d like to get something that lists his birthplace, etc, or even better, contains/receive photographs, services history, etc.

Most of the military research I’ve done on other ancestors so far has been through my local FHC. For those ancestors, though, I was working on years prior to the 1860s.
I have yet to locate these type of sources of German Military information for the 1903-1907 timeframe.

As a side note to this, my great-grandfather was injured while in the army. He broke his leg in 1907 and was in an Army hospital for months. I wrote to the German Military Archives with this bit of data, but their reponse seemed to indicate they had no reocrd of this (though I am not sure they even really answered my request for info).

Any advice or suggestions on the best method for proceeding is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Randall
I am trying to find information on a Ludwig HOHREITER who was to have been a high ranking officer during WWI. He is buried, I believe, in Ulm, Germany, in a grave site with two others. I have a photo of this stone should others connect to these lines. There is writing on the back of this photo but it is in the old German script. If anyone would be interested in that I would be more than happy to scan and send it.

Those at this grave site are:
Carl WOLLINSK - 1841-1897
Marie geb. BUCK - 1841-1927
Ludwig HOHREITER - 1861-1948

Hilfe bitte...Friedhof in Beuron

Several years ago in a hilly area of S. Germany we discovered a small but lonely WW2 German cemetery at the side of a forested road. Some kms on, the road continues to drop steeply down to a T-junction opposite the massive Kloster Beuron, standing on the Danube - (approx 25km west of Sigmaringen).
Does anyone know of this cemetery ? I am curious about the lonely location, it appears to be tended; most of the 24 soldiers buried there died in the early months of 1945. Can anyone help please....?

19th Century Service Records

I'm looking for a source for information from the later 19th century for the service records of my great grandfather Wilhelm Friedrick Karl von Negelein who emmigrated to the U.S. in Nov. 1900. I would also like any information on his brothers Gerhard Wilhelm August von Negelein, and Alfred Otto Alexander von Negelein. The photographs I have of them in uniform appear to be cavalry style. They were from Oldenburg, and Alfred was a renowned horse trainer who was jumping horses at 80. Thank you for any assistance.

Franco-Prussian War Service Records

My great grandfather, John Nepumuk Kneer, was a soldier in the Franco-Prussian War, presumably in the Royal-Wurttemberg Army. A representative from the Baden-Wurttemberg archives at Stuttgart says that any search for servicerecords at the archives requires information on his military unit (regiment, company). In the absence of such service information, what are some possible research strategies that might identify his service records? Thanks.

I am trying to locate information on the Prussian Officer Corp from 1870-1890. I am trying to find the names of Colonels and Generals during that time frame. My interest is in trying to find the name of a Prussian General that was killed during this time frame (probably the 1880's) by another Prussian officer, probably a Colonel. Or so the story goes. This may all be a family legend, but it's worth some research on my part.
Thanks,
Bruce Hanneman

My grandfather passed away a couple years ago and recently we found his medals from when he was in the U.S. army in World War ll. In the box with them was a medal with german writing on it. I have been trying to look at site with German medals on the web but have not been able to find any like this one. I am wondering what the medal was given for and is it a World War ll medal or from an earlier war. His ancestors were from the Prussia area and came to the U.S. in the 1870's. I was wondering if it could be one of theirs or did he bring it back as a souvenier. My grandma has no idea where it came from so anyone can help it would be appreciated. One side says: Mitt Gott(top) Fur kaiser &reich(middle). The other looks like it says Fur ?urf & Muterland in the middle and Mitt Gott again at the top. I attached a picture of one side.

Bromberg Military Unit in 1807

Translation of an Evangelische Kirche Bromberg microfilm from the LDS reveals that my great-great-great grandfather, Daniel Zakrzewski, was married in Bromberg, Posen on 20 March 1807. He was at that time a Sargent in the Polnisch Depo-Battalion (no number of regiment given). Some Pruissian military films that I seen already microfilmed for Bromberg quit at the year 1806. Since Napolean defeated Prussia in 1806-1807 and Bromberg is said to have become under the administration of the Grand Duch of Warsaw already in 1807, would my ancestor truly be in a Polish military battalion or not? The officer of the regiment was a Captain Von Scharnolensky (approx. translation) who came to the clergy with a license/note for this marriage. Any hints on who had jurisdiction (Prussian or Polish) of this army and what the regiment # might be would be greatly appreciated. Galen Pieper

Help identifying pre-WWI uniforms

I have a set of photographs of my great grandfather, Hugo Ernst Geissler, in his pre-WWI uniforms as a member of the Imperial German Army. One photograph (these can be found online at http://www.pbase.com/jgr/geissler) identifies his unit as the 9th Company, Grenadier-Regt. König Friedrich I (4.Ostpreußisches) Nr.5. Two others have him in two very different uniforms. Another is a close-up of the crest on the dress helmet.

Another appears to be earlier (no fancy horsehair on the helmet) and the last has him seated amidst his troops in Danzig.

I'd like to determine as much as I can from those uniforms and photographs, and to see if there's any way of getting more information about his unit(s). I know the Prussian Army records were destroyed in 1945, but surely there is something still available...?

Can anyone help?

-- jgr

looking for a WWII German army officer

Hello listers,
I'm new here. I'm looking for Franciscus TYBUS, he was a Polish officer in the German army during WWII.
He was in charge of the customs of Brennero (border line between Italy and Austria)
He was born somewhere in the north of Poland around 1920 and he died of malaria around 1945/1946, between Rome and Florence.
As I have not many info, I would like to know where the last name comes from (what town?), and where I can look for his military records.
This is because his daughter, who never knew his father, would like to find his tombstone where to put a flower.
Any suggestions and info are accepted.
Thanks in advance
Riccardo

Need help finding German ancestor who fought in American Civil War

I am looking for the service records of a German ancestor, Augustus Kuehn, who came to America to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Since his name is fairly common and can be spelled a number of ways, I am having trouble locating his specific records. Is there a way to search specifically for German citizens who fought in the war?

Does anyone know where I might find some info on the Leibregiment zu Pferd a cavalry unit of Hessen-Darmstadt around 1710? More specifically Hauptmann Georg Heinrich von Vashold's company?

In 1710 my 6th Great Grandfather, (Johann) Georg Ernst Eberling, was part of this unit.

A friend in Germany has checked at the Staatsarchiv Darmstadt and had no luck in finding anything.

Thanks,
Brian Z.
Nassau military questions (mostly Napoleonic)

Does anyone know a good source for information on the military of Nassau from around 1710 to around 1820? Three of my direct ancestors (according to various church records) were in the military there (my 4th, 5th & 6th Great Grandfathers). Two were drummers (different eras).

Does anyone know what the contingent battalion stationed in Dillenburg was? Was it part of a bigger unit?

One ancestor was a drummer in the "2nd Regiment in Breda" when he married in 1793. Is this the same 2nd Regiment as the one that fought for Napoleon later and then fought against him?

Anyone know where to look for muster rolls or some other type of records from Napoleonic times? The 2nd left their musicians behind when they defected from Napoleons army & they were imprisioned along with the injured 2nd troops. Are there any kind of prision records out there for Bayonne where they were held?

Thanks,
Brian Eberling
I'm trying to locate any information on Albert Stahl. He served in WWII in either the German Air Force or the German Army. I have not info on his birth or death except he died between 1950-1956. He lived in Ulm Germany around 1941. If anyone knows any info or how I could go about looking for German military records that would be great. Thanks
Nicole Ladera
