Would anyone know how to find out more about this army that existed from about 1710 in various forms until the unification of Italy?

I have an Irish ancestor that served in it, rising to the rank of Captain. His name was Francis Cotter and I have a note that his father Martin also served but I am not convinced about that. Presumably in the first half of the 18th C but how and where can I find more?
