Is there a list of those who served in Korean War???/

Where can I find a list of those who served in the Korean War? I am trying to find info on my father who passed away in 1965. After my father passed away in Tallahassee FL in 1965, our family moved to Indiana to be with my mother's family. We lost touch with my father's side and did not go back to Fl to visit. I recently drove to FL to find my father's grave and found that it is unmarked. I believe that since he served in the Korean War, he may qualify for a Veteran marker for his grave. The problem is that I don't know exactly when he served and I do not have his social security number. I do not have any immediate family left - so I can't get this info from them. My father was born in Gilchrist Trenton FL in 1932 and died in Leon Tallahassee FL in 1965. Is there a list of those who served somewhere???? How can I go about finding the info that I need?

Thanks,
Shannon

Hello,
I am trying to connect with someone who may have served with my Dad. I lost him in April and am working on a memorial for him. Hamilton King Avery II, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF, Retired. He graduated from West Point Military Academy 1941. He trained as a pilot in B-24's and A-26's and flew in Egypt, Libya, Romania, Naples and Normandy. He served in the 98th Bomb Group/Pyramidiers. On 1 Aug 1943, led by Col. John Kane, they took off to bomb the Ploesti Oil Fields. I have some great pictures of his crew and hope some of them are still living. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force Intelligence Ottawa, Canada. Then was transferred to the Far Eastern Air Forces, Tokyo, Japan in 1953 during the Korean War. In 1957 he was reassigned to the Pentagon, Washington, DC, Intelligence Department where he served until he retired in 1961. Could anyone help?
Thank you for any information

My Dad Barry Winslow AF Corporal 1949-1951

My father, Barry Winslow, served in the Korean War 1949-1951. He spent the next years of his life in a V.A. Hospital in NY, on and off the first years after the war and then until he died there at the young age of 36, in 1969, when I was 14. I am in the process of trying to locate his records, both medical and military. This is actually my 4th time around, as I keep on hitting brick walls. I'm now in the process of waiting for records. I am praying that it will go smoothly and I will get some information.

I'm writing here now hoping that someone may have known him then. It would mean the world to me to hear from someone who did, someone perhaps who served with him in Korea, who has some idea of what happened to him, someone who was simply a friend, someone who knew him, at all.

He was a Corporal in the Air Force, served from 1949-1951, and he was from New York.

God Bless You, Dad...on this Father's Day, and always...

Thanks all.

Pamela

Help me with my fruitless search...

I have been looking for information on my grandfather for over a year now and thus far I've been able to find nothing, so I thought someone here might be able to offer up something...

My grandfather, Bernard Steven Kramer, was born in 1917 in Illinois. I don't know when he enlisted but I know that he served in the Korean War and was a POW and on the Bataan Death March. He actually escaped while on the march and was taken care of by a 'tribe' for 7 years before returning home to learn that his wife had died in the war and that his son was just gone. Weird story, I know...
My grandfather never talked about this but my father does have the hat he wore in the jungle while a POW and his Purple Heart. He also remembers that his father had scars up his back from bamboo stalks being driven up his spine. My grandfather passed away in 1975 from a complication of diabetes, something he developed while living in the jungle.
We do have a picture of my grandfathers unit and it reads this:
E Btry
3rd Field Artillery
Ft. Sheridan, IL
April 1938

I've sent off the proper forms to the NARA but they were able to find nothing for me. I also know that he was a drill sargeant and my dad grew up all over the world. My grandfather retired during the Vietnam War...
I know my information is spacey and all over the place but any help would be greatly appreciated...

Korean War Veterans of Western Pennsylvania

"Memorial seen easing pain
Area veterans want public to remember a forgotten conflict"

By Martin Kinnunen

TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 11/11/1994

After serving in combat with the Marines in Korea, Leonard Reilly Jr. was haunted by nightmares, blackouts and other psychological demons.

Reilly, 66, of Ingram, shed those personal woes and misery by turning to God.

"When I embraced Christianity, they seemed to fade away," the old leatherneck said this week.

After the war, Reilly became an ordained Free Methodist minister. He was one of the lucky ones.

For many of Reilly's former comrades, the war has never really ended. They continue to have difficulties sleeping. War memories and stress shattered marriages, made it tough to hold a job.

And there were other troubles.

"At first, they (the federal government) didn't recognize injuries from frost bite" in settling compensation claims, Reilly said.

But the emotional healing process for those vets could get a big boost if a planned Korean War memorial near Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh can get off the ground.

Reilly is active in the non-profit group called the Korean War Veterans of Western Pennsylvania Memorial Fund Inc.

The city of Pittsburgh has given the organization a plot of land in Roberto Clemente Park to erect its memorial. The site, which is between the Fort Duquesne and Sixth Street bridges on the North Shore of the Allegheny River, was dedicated July 27, the anniversary of the 1953 cease-fire that ended active hostilities in Korea.

Project costs are estimated at about $1 million. Organizers now are conducting an open competition to select a memorial design. Submissions are due April 30.

The memorial will help heal those still suffering from the repercussions of serving in the war, which took more than 54,000 American lives. Another 103,000 Americans were wounded.

"They can gather over there and console each other," Reilly said. "They say hard men don't cry. But it's a relief valve. It's alright for a man to cry," he added.

For other local veterans, the memorial will serve another purpose.

"This is called the forgotten war in many areas," said Edward Stevens, 62, long-time tax collector and treasurer for Scott Township and a machine gun section leader for the Army in Korea.

"People don't seem to remember there was a war between World War II and Vietnam. We who served in the war should never let the public forget the sacrifices that were made," Stevens noted.

According to the organization's brochure, the memorial's fundamental intent is to express gratitude for all those who served.

In Korea, Reilly rose to the rank of master sergeant in the Marines. He was wounded in combat on three occasions.

"You have two types of men in combat - violent and non-violent," he explained. "I'm easy-going. You do things against your constitution that come back to haunt you."

The nightmares and blackouts that tortured Reilly eased when he turned to Christianity and the ministry. He also has been able to erase parts of the war from his memory.

"I can't go back too far and describe different things," he noted.

Reilly is active in several veterans' groups, including the Allegheny County chapter of the Federation of Four Chaplains.

The federation holds memorial services in early February each year to remember a Catholic priest, a rabbi and two Protestant ministers who gave their life jackets to servicemen in the sinking of the USS Dorchester during World War II.

Obit. Dr. Bertram Katz (1924 - 2007)

HUBBARD, Ohio – Dr. Bertram Katz, 83, died at his home on Monday morning, Dec. 31, 2007 surrounded by family and friends. A longtime area surgeon, Dr. Katz operated on many thousands of Valley residents and was Chief of Surgery at Youngstown Hospital Association from 1969 to 1973.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio on Oct. 5, 1924 to Abraham and Julia (Sacher) Katz, Dr. Katz was preceded in death by his two sisters, Katherine Scheinberg and Edna Buntman.

He is survived by Eleanor (Hume), his wife of 59 years; his brother, William of Hubbard; his children, Jon of Los Angeles; Nicholas of Boca Raton, Fla., Katherine of Pittsburgh, Jeffry of Shaker Heights and Daniel of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and grandchildren Carisa, Benjamin, Rachel, Tania, Leo, Anna, Samuel, Charlotte, Elizabeth and Oliver. Dr. Katz will also be deeply missed by his daughters-in-law, Anne Marie Feretti Katz, Cynthia Katz, Judith Malone and Molly Renfroe Katz, and by Samuel Cercone.

Dr. Katz attended The Rayen School, Ohio State University, Holy Cross, and the University of Illinois School of Medicine. Following an internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, he completed his surgical training at City of Detroit Receiving Hospital. He was a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, serving as a surgeon in a MASH unit during the Korean War.

Upon his return to Youngstown in 1956, Dr. Katz began a practice in general surgery, which would encompass nearly 40 years. He was an admired teacher and mentor who trained numerous surgical residents, many of whom went on to prominent careers in the Youngstown area. In a case reported by the national and international media, Dr. Katz in May of 1957 led a surgical team that performed the first successful separation of conjoined (Siamese) twins sharing a vital organ. In addition to his technical skill, Dr. Katz was noted for an unwavering dedication to his patients. He developed deep and fulfilling friendships with a number of colleagues, especially those who shared his sense of humor and love of life.

Funeral services will be held at Rodef Shalom Temple at noon on Thursday, Jan. 3, with calling hours beginning an hour earlier at 11 a.m.
Burial arrangements are being handled by the Shriver-Allison-Courtley-Weller-King Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Social Action Committee at Rodef Shalom Congregation or the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM).

Am looking for information regarding RAYMOND DEAN MCCURDY, JR. Service Dates: Regular Army -- Oct 12, 1943 - Sept 7, 1945; Army/Air Force -- Sep 8, 1945 - Feb 28, 1946.

At the time of his death, he was a flight officer (1st Lt, I believe.) I have been told he was in an aircraft accident of some type in Korea before the war started. He does has a grave site in the Punch Bowl in Hawai'i, but I understand a body was never recovered. I have his Service Number, but the NPRC tells me that his records were probably among those lost in the fire.

I am looking for any information about the flight, anyone else on-board, where else I might look for service records, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Could anyone tell me if there is a place on the internet where we might find a roster of all veterans that served from Maine and that might list their residence. Maybe someone can give me an idea on where to start in obtaining this information. Thanks so much for any help. Carole Bartlett Foss

USMC KOREA CORSAIR PILOT "lost records" LEPPER, Arthur R.

I am going to have to try and create a "new" file for my father who served in Korea. The only info I have is that he signed up with several buddies in Chicago for the USMC.He was at Camp Pendleton, flew a Corsair, was shot down, was first listed as MIA then KIA and found to be a POW. My grandmother had a very hard time finding him in a Naval hospital in Maryland. He had extensive frost bite and facial surgery for this and massive dental reconstruction. He was laid up for several months and was basically listed as a John Doe. His records do NOT exsist. He wouldn't talk about his time in "hell" and now his "memory" is gone. I am trying to put together the pieces for my sons to know. There were only "3" that made it out with my dad "Arthur R. Lepper"; one was a Chinese American whose large family owned a restaurant in downtown Chicago and the other was an African American I only remember mtg once who would also have a son & daughter approx 45 years old now. The guys would have all served in the USMC and would have come from the southside of Chicago 1948 before enlisting. Any veterans from Chicago know ths name "Lepper", who came back to Chicago and used the GI bill to go to school? I appreciate any leads to follow up on such as what unit names to look for etc...a greatful daughter. Thank you Veterans for your time and service to our country.

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to get military records of my deceased father-in-law, Emery Robertson. He has been dead for 26 years and I have just been told that his military service records were destroyed in the 1973 fire in St. Louis.

It is imperative that we get these records to prove that my husband is an american citizen (German mother - war bride) My husband was born in Germany and has a German birth certificate. No record of submission to the american consulate and no records of any naturalization. Both parents are dead and other family scattered with whereabouts unknown.

We were told by immigration that we needed military records of my husbands father to prove his fathers residence in the US for 5 years after his fathers 14th birthday. (his father dropped out of school and joined the military at 15 years old) He was in Korea and in Vietnam. Army and Air force.

ANY help /. suggestions would be appreciated!!!!!

Thank you so much for reading!

Evelyn (White) Robertson

evelynwr7@netzero.com
My father's brother, Nicholas Papp, was in USMC sometime between 1948-1952. The story was that his plane crashed off the coast of Florida and no trace was found. A military ceremony was held but there is no actual gravesite. He was born in Hungary and emigrated to Trenton NJ. He was born around 1922. I've not been able to find him on any immigration manifests and only have a Marine Corp picture and stories my grandmother told me when I was young. I have no one left to ask any questions of as they have all deceased.

Held the rank of 1st. LT. at one time. That could have changed. That is really all that I know of his experience in Korea. If anyone has a dad, uncle, so forth that might have known him, please e-mail me. Thanks

POW/MIA Korean War, OWENS

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Wise County, Virginia as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: ERWIN PATRICK OWENS
Born: August 26, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss: August 5, 1950, Missing in Action (MIA)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Owens family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
My now deceased father Donald Gilbert Halfen served in the Korean War starting around 1951 or 1952 being a part of the 187th Airborne. I know he was part of the 505th and 101st airborne for a few jumps I think. I know little to nothing about my fathers military background, only what I found out from contacting the U.S. Army Office. I know his father was Norman Halfen and His mother was Lydia Halfen (Surname Kraus). I do know that his parents were born in Germany I just don't what part, year or if he has any brothers or sisters alive.
Please if anyone knows of my fathers lineage, living family members, or if anyone knew of my father in the Korean War or served with him, please conatact me. I would love to know of my father and what kind of military officer he was.
Thank you
Korean War MIA Family Outreach

When the Korean War ended, there were over 8,000 military men classified as Missing in Action. Although recovery and identification efforts continue, many of those men do not have current next-of-kin contact information in their official files, or the information contained there is long out of date. The government is currently searching for the families of over 2,600 MIAs in order to update their records. A listing of those MIAs can be found on our website at: www.KoreanWarMIAs.com Please check the site. If you know of any family members of the men shown there, or if you would like to help locate them, contact me at the e-mail address shown below. For more information about the government’s ongoing recovery and identification effort, visit the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command website at: http://www.jpac.pacom.mil Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. E-mail to: RaySestak@KoreanWarMIAs.com
POW/MIA Korean War, HARRISON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Allen County, Indiana as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: BANNIE HARRISON, JR.
Born: October 29, 1930, Black
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Harrison family is one of those missing.

My father-in-law is trying to locate his former USMC Staff Sgt William S. GROFF. His last contact with William GROFF is a letter posted in 1958 from Gardena, CA, where William was living at the time. In the letter he states that he has one daughter born 4 years earlier (ca 1954) no name given. He also states that he has recently taken a trip to New Jersey, that he was currently attending USC, and had been treated by the USN for TB in 1956.

This is all the information I have.

If you have any information concerning this William S. Groff, please email me. Thank you in advance for your help.

Lisa
To anyone who was in the 187th Airborne during the Korean War, I am looking for anyone who served with my now deceased father Donald Gilbert Halfen. I believe according to the U.S. Army office I contacted he began in 1951 or 1952 and was there until 1955 or 1956. I could be wrong however as the information I recieved from the U.S. Army office is incomplete. They only had 6 years of his 13 year career. If you were his friend, knew him, or of him, please contact me. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I've got scanned copies of photos that my aunt inherited when my grandfather passed away, but very little information on where or when they were taken. He served from 1941-1963 in the Pacific, so they could be WWII or Korean era.

If anyone could take a look I'd appreciate it. I'd also be happy to pass along the large scanned files (I've reduced the quality for the web so they don't take up so much space). I don't know about passing on the original photos of other people (where my grandfather is not present), but I could talk to my aunt if they are of one of your relatives. (The only person identified is Captain Woods, Company CO stationed at Camp McTureous on Dec 1959). The photos can be found at:

http://www.molgen.mpg.de/~spang/christina/harlan_usmc_photos...

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Finding info on MIA investigation?

Hello - I am hoping someone can help me figure out where to go next in my search for what happened to my grandfather, a pilot during the Korean War.
We know that his aircraft disappeared over the Atlantic during a flight between the Azores and Massachusetts. We have written to NPRC and they sent us a listing of his duty assignments and also a casualty report. The casualty report mentions that the Air Force kept him in a "missing status" until "evidence considered sufficient to establish the fact of death was received". My question is - would this 'evidence' be available somewhere? I am sure that the Air Force would have had to provide this to my grandmother (or something to prove to her that they had searched for him), but she passed away several years ago and I do not know what might have happened to such papers, if there were any.
Sorry for such a long-winded explaination. I am just trying all avenues to track down this information. Thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to give me!

My father was a marine sent to Korea in 1953. I'm looking for any information about his battalion. I know very little about the military, and the only information I have is written on a photo of his training group at Camp Pendleton: Co. B 1st BN. 2nd INF. TR. REG. T. C. 2. Does anyone know what any of that means?

Or these names: Alva/Alvie B.Wallace (my grandpa) or Jack Ray Wallace (my dad)-
I had gr-uncles named Clifford, Harvey Walter & Cleatus Wallace- there may have been one or two more but their names I'm not familiar with.
again, any imfo please contact me
thanks in advance & god bless all the wonderful men & women who gave their all for our great country- you all are the best (:

Lillie M.

my dad was Jack Ray Wallace b Jan 7th 1939- he was supposed to have illegally enlisted in the army during the Korean war around 1955. He was given an undesireable/dishonorable discharge & I'm trying to find out what for. When he enlisted, he used my grandfathers name- my grandpa had been a Lt.Col in the Army & at the time my dad went in as him, he was working in the southern IL railroad or somewhere & by the time he found out what my dad had done, it was too late & he had been drafted. It was either the Korean War or Vietnam- if he got an undesireable in one war, could he enlist again to go into another one?
Anyone with imfo greatly urged to email me. My dad died in Weatherford, Tx in 1990 & I've since found his children from his first marriage before my mom- they don't have any memories of our father so I'm not only wanting imfo for myself, but for them as well- especially my brother Jack Ray Wallace-Bailey Jr. They gave my brother hell when he enlisted because of his name- we don't know what our dad did/didn't do but would like to know & most of all if the guys that knew my dad & what he did, to tell them that children should not be held accountable for the sins of their fathers.
Any imfo greatly appreciated,
Lillie M.(Wallace) Neal
wyvern43@earthlink.net

need help 34th Air Division? S/Sgt Lee Hale Warner

I have my dad's discharge paper from the Air Force and I'm trying to figure out what divisions he would have served in. I would like to locate people he may have served with. In the box where listed Most Significant Duty Assignment, it states he was in the 34th Air Div (Def). I've tried to search for this division and have had no luck so far. Would this have been the only division he served with? Would the discharge have listed others? He served from July 24, 1950-September 8, 1953.
Thanks for your help.
Sue
