The SS Robing Goodfellow was sunk by the german submarine U-862 on 25 July 1944. The ship was enroute from Cape Town, South Africa to New York. All 41 crew and the 27 Navy armed guards on board perished in the sinking. There is a John Benjamin Murphy , ships steward, listed among the missing crew. The position of the sinking was listed as 20 degrees 03south, 14 degrees 21' west.
