Hope you're still out there! I am descended from John Kent also like your wife. Have been researching the family history too. I have never been able to locate his military service record even tho his death record indicates he was a veteran of the U.S. - Mexican War. Did you find any proof? I have not found his passenger ship record or port of entry either. He supposedly immigrated in 1846, his ship sank and he was said to be a hero because he rescued many fellow passengers and was only member of his family to survive. (That's the story anyway). I theorize he arrived in New Orleans or possibly even Galveston, TX as many German immigrants did. He is listed in many records as being Prussian. Would love to discuss further with you.
