Frederich August Gausman, 1826-1890, Co. K, US Mtd. Rflmn

I don't know much about researching wars and veterans but I need help in finding out if a man did serve in the Mexican War. Where can I find records etc.? His name is Frederich August Gausman, 1826-1890. His headstone reads: Co. K, US Mtd. Rflmn". He would have been 20 years old in 1846, the year the US Mounted Rifles began. I am having trouble finding any records for him and I have tried many variations of his name. He is buried in Woodbury, MN, which is in Washington County. Anyone who might be able to help?

looking for Frank Law, served Mexican War

I am looking for Frank Law who served in the Mexican War. He was living in Macon Co, Alabama when he joined and was approximately 16. He returned home after the war "shell shocked", what we now call PTSD, and satyed for less than a year then left, supposedly for Mississippi to marry a widow with a lumber mill.

He was my grandfather John Law's oldest brother and the family completely lost track of Frank when he left Macon Co, Alabama the second time. John and Frank also had a brother named Menso Shelton aka Shelley and their father's name was Tom Law. Tom worked for a timber cutting company and supposedly moved there with Shelly and Frank and his pregnant wife abt 1890 from Georgia. Tom simply walked away and abandoned the boys to the Charlie Morgan family after his wife died.

Mexican War Pensions

My ancestor, Frederick J Brant, received his pension through the Mexican War. He was an army enlistee, however, in the Indian Wars in Washington Territory for 5 years. He enlisted in May 1855 in the 9th US Cavalry and Infantry and received his discharge in May 1860 in Washington Territory. So if your ancestor was a military veteran between the end of the Mexican War and the start of the Civil War, his pension record may have been included with the Mexican War Pensions.

Steven Brent

Lookup for William Grant in the Mexican War

The information I have for William Grant regarding the Mexican War came from his military papers. On 6 or 8 May 1846 he was appointed Corporal, then reduced to Private; July 1846 he was transfered to Battery "C" 1st Artillery; Sep 1846 transfered to Company "B", 4th U.S. Infantry; July 1847, transferred to Company "F", 4th U.S. Infantry.

13 Sep 1847 he was wounded in battle, in action at Chapultepec (or Chepiettepao), Mexico. 60 days leave, given to him by Gen. Scott. Gen. William received a discharge and pension of $8.00 per month for several years as per an account of his wife. As per www.dmwv.org/honoring/chapmex.htm, William was in 1st Division, commanded by Brig-Gen Worth, in Garland's Brigade, 4th Infantry, #11 on the roster of wounded. He was on the Roll of Honor, U.S. Casualties of the Battles of Chapultepec and the City of Mexico. It said: Pvt. William Grant, Company E, severely.

He served in the Civil War, and was murdered in 1864, being robbed of the payroll he was in possession of and thrown into the Mississippi River from the Steamer Burlington. His wife (Catherine Haley Grant) died in 1867 in Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. She applied for his Civil War pension before she died but was denied for some reason from what I understand. His children applied for his Civil War pension, and I have a copy of the one from his daughter, but don't know whether that was denied or not.

In your other answers to look-ups, you have said that pensions weren't given out until 1887, or did I misread that information? If so, why did he get a pension during the Mexican War--was that because he was wounded? Would he have gotten land somewhere, also?

William Grant was born about 1811-1813 in Edinburgh, Scotland, as per his enlisting papers in Lowell, Massachusetts in January 1838. He died 31 Aug 1864, Mississippi River between St. Louis and Alton, Illinois. There were no papers in his military files which gave the story of his demise, only from family. But his military papers did atate he was "discharged" at Alton, Illinois upon his death; he was Captain of Co. A, 14th (believe it should be just "4th") U.S. Heavy Artillery Colored.

Would he have pension papers for the Mexican War in which he served? If so, I'd appreciate it if you could look them up at your convenience. Also, would he have received land for his service? And - Would any of these papers have his birth date? (He is my 2 GR grandfather and I can't get beyond him.)

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Mary

George Wade b. TN d. Mexican War

If anyone can assist me I would gratefully appreciate it.
Many years ago, my mother swears she saw my GGGgrandfather's name published in a book about Mexican War soldiers. She was trying to confirm the family story that he had been killed in the Mexican War. Family story says that a Great Aunt had seen the epaulets from his uniform. He was married to Nellie (Ryan?) and had seven children born (in AL) between 1830 and 1846. I find the wife in children in Blount Co, AL in 1850. One daughter (Millie Wade Holley)lists TN as his birthplace in a subsequent (TX) census. I'm just starting to work this line.....

it is suggested that Francis John Wyruck fought in the M-A war. so far I have been unable to follow up on this. he traveled around quite a bit, and I cannot find him in the 1850 census-in fact, I cannot find him or his parents in the 1840 census, either, though the family came to America in 1831. they were of Centre and Cambria Co.'s in Pennsylvania, but by 1860 he was living in Vernon Co., Missouri. does anyone know of a list of those who fought in the M-A war? if so, would you please check for him? he spelled his name Wyruck, but he was born Weyrauch and it could be spelled Wyrick, Weyrough or some other variation-I've even seen it misspelled Warrack.

Francis John Wyruck son of Johannes/John and Mary
b. 27 Apr 1826(?) Alsace/Rhineland Pfalz
d. 22 Jul 1884 Wharton, TX
but between the M-A war and his death he lived in Missouri, then Kansas, then California, and then settled in Wharton, TX.

thank you for your help.

Received pension file, still questions on Mexican War Service

I recently received the pension file for my ancestor, William Cooley. It has quite a bit of really good information, such as that he was in the Civil War as well. But of his Mexican war service, it says very little except for 2 pages. One says: 'no other widow claim on file' for 'Mex. or O.W.' (I'm assuming OW is Other War) and immediately after that is: '20978-160-55, Mex. and O.W. records O.K.' Is this the number of the file, and is O.K.-Oklahoma?
The 2nd page reads:
'Bounty land claim shows that soldier was a teamster in Mexican War from July 1 1847 to Dec 5 1847. Employed by James M. Nye, Wagonmaster'. The same numbers as above are written above it. These are not, by the way, the numbers of his, or his wife's, pension claims. Those are different. Could someone kindly inform me as to what my next step should be? Thanks, Karen

Example of Pension Record Information -John Q. Austin

To give you some idea of the wealth of information contained in these pension files, below is an extract from one record. I am not related to this person and have no other information about him. Sandy

John Q. Austin, Private
Company F, Sixth Regiment Louisiana Infantry Volunteers

John Quincy Austin, age 70, a resident of West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, on 30 Aug 1893, filed for an increase in his Mexican War Pension. He served as a Private in the company commanded by Captain James O. Fuqua, in the 6th Regiment of Louisiana Infantry commanded by Colonel Featherstone in the war with Mexico. He enlisted at Port Hudson, Louisiana on or about the blank day of blank, 1846 for the term of six months and he was honorable discharged at New Orleans in 1846. He actually served sixty days with the Army of the United State in Mexico, which service was as follows: “We were stationed for short while at Brazos Santiago and then marched up the Rio Grand River to Burrita, and there we remained until we were disbanded and returned home.

“I am seventy years of age having been born at West Feliciana Parish on 27 Jan 1823. I am dependent on others than those legally bound for my support for my livelihood; that I have been so dependent since the year last past, and that the person upon whom I am dependent is my son Jones Henry Austin, of West Feliciana, who has afforded me the following support: That my son has a family dependant on his labor for a support and that my son, together with the aid from the pension I draw from the United States Government furnishes me the best support he can. I am disabled by reason of old age and increasing infirmities.

“I am married; that the maiden name of my wife was Mary Ann Turberville, to whom I was married at West Feliciana Parish, in the State of Louisiana, on the 26 Oct 1848; that my wife is now living.

“In support and proof of my right to pension I tender herewith the following evidence of J. J. Spillman, which I enclose herewith. I am a pensioner of the United States under certificate No. 4096, at the rate of eight dollars per month. That since my discharge from said service I have resided as follows, to wit: at West Feliciana Parish.” Signed by John Quincy Austin and witnessed by J. H. Clack and L. P. Kilbornne before L. W. Brandon, Clerk, 13th Judicial District Court.

John H. Clack says he has known John Quincy for thirty years. John J. Spillman says he has known Austin for over fifty years. “I live next neighbor to him; am frequently at his house and know all about Austin’s affairs in this respect, from my personal knowledge.” John J. Spillman’s mark was witnessed by J. H. Clack and A. H. Forester.

Source: Mexican War Pension, SC-4096..
Copyright 2007 by Sandra Wilkinson Blandford.
Benjamin Hardy Crawford, Autauga, Alabama

I found Benjamin H. Crawford listed with Cox's company, Wither's regiment of Alabama volunteers, mustered 2 Jun 1846. Family lore says he died in the Mex. War, but I haven't been able to find evidence of that. Supposedly 2 of his sons served with him, but they're not listed with the regiments from Alabama, (where they were from) If anyone has info about him, (or the 2 sons who supposedly served: Thomas and William), I'd be grateful for it. Thanks.

Federal Pension Records-which file to apply for?

Which one should I apply for: the Full Pension Application File, or the Pension Documents Packet? I remember seeing on a website that one of these is the better bet, that you may hit the jackpot, and that there might be a whole bunch of additional info, such as regards to family, where they lived at the time, etc. You can't request both at once, otherwise I would. And the former is more expensive, which leads me to believe it would contain more info. Thanks!
Karen

Hi

Info I came across with possible Mexican-American War vets with Steuben county NY connections during pursuit of another query:

Bancroft's History of California, Vol V (pgs 499-518) describes the formation and deployment of the NY Volunteers who served during the Mexican-American War in CA. Footnotes indicates Company I, of Volunteers was raised in Bath NY, listing following officers and NCO's (no lower grades listed in footnotes) ; Capt Wm. E. SHANNON; Lieutenants Palmer B.
"Drummer" rank in War With Mexico

It appears that my ancestor named Matthew Allen enlisted in Columbus, GA on 19 June, 1846 into Capt Jones Reg, GA Vols. This Reg subsequently became Co "E", Reg, GA INF. His rank in was "Drummer" and rank out was "Private". He was only 16 y/o at enlistment. Wasn't the rank of "Drummer" usually filled by young men or boys? I know I have heard the term "Drummer Boy" and they were probably called that due to their young age.
1850 census reference to War?

In the Marion, Hancock Co., Ohio census I found an entry in the "Occupation" column that is difficult to read. It is for two of the sons of Henry Baker. They are William and George, ages 21 and 18 respectively. The first word in the entry is almost illegible: "Lodose v. Genelo." Below that is written "California." I cannot figure out what this means. Were these two young men soldiers in California engaged in some battle of the Mexican-American War or what? I'm at a loss. Can someone help? Thank you.

Pension Card-legible example of document

I recently came across a pension card of what I believe is my GGG Grandfather's, William C. Cooley. My question is, like the WW1 Draft Cards on Ancestry, is there a website or place that would have just the card itself and its contents, as an example? Have trouble figuring out what is typed on it, as the image is a bit fuzzy. What are really the problem are the 2 categories at the bottom. One looks like 'attorney' and the other is just too fuzzy.
Thanks, Karen

New Orleans Rangers-Mexican War

These are excerpts from a very lengthy obituary that appeared in the Wayne County Pennsylvania papers in 16 October 1916. John Sarsfield O'CONNOR born 1831 Londonderry, Ireland died 16 October 1916 in Hawley, PA. His parents Neil and Sarah O'CONNOR emigrated to Scotland and then to St. John's Canada about 1836, from there to New Orleans where the father established a jeweler's business. The senior O'CONNOR raised a company of New Orleans Rangers which he commanded under General Scott. After the Mexican war the family moved to New York City from Greenock. John and 2 of his brothers served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Mr. O'CONNOR was first sergeant of Company F. 69th Regulars New York volunteers. After the war John become a glass cutter in White Mills, Pa. He was honored by being made Postmaster at White Mills during President Cleveland's second administration. He revolutionized glass cutting and became very famous. He built a glass cutting factory in Paupack Falls, Hawley, Wayne Co, PA. John married Hannah MARRETT in New York in 1860. The family lived in Hawley, PA and Goshen, New York. John S. O'CONNOR died at age 85 in his home in Hawley. Surviving were four daughters Annie, wife of Timothy D. O'CONNELL of Honesdale, PA; Mary, wife of Thomas P. CUSICK of Goshen, NY; Clotlide, wife of Thomas J. BURKE of Scranton, PA and Miss Kathryn O'CONNOR, Hawley. Ten grandchildren also survived, namely Reginald, Crescentia, Evaristus and Clotilde O'CONNELL of Honesdale; Lettia and Frank CUSICK of Goshen, NY; William, John, Arthur and Mary children of deceased son Arthur E. O'CONNOR. Looking for any information/connections. Please contact Walton J. Sullivan at wsullivw@aol.com
I have been told that the above ancestor died about 1846 to 1847 in the Mexican War. He apparently lived in GA when he was called to fight. His wife states that he went to SC. I ordered a book of the Mexican American War of 1846 from our State Library in SC, but he was not in any of those rosters.

Question: If he was called from GA to go to SC, would it be possible that he is listed in a roster in GA?

Otherwise, if some kind soul has access to that information, we would like to know if in fact, J.E. or J. Ebenezer Hilburn was recorded in that war. His wife states he died, but we think he is alive and well in 1850 in the Abbeville District, SC. He apparently never returned to GA. But, we can't be sure until we exhaust all possibilities that he did died early on in that war.

Thank you,

SN in SC

For years we have tried to connect her up to a family but have not had any luck. Nancy maiden name may have been MOORE/MORE.

Any information would be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary. Thanks in advance

Jackie

Tour of Monterrey and Saltillo, Mexico

I recently joined “The Descendants of Mexican War Veterans” (see www.dmwv.org). They sponsored a 3-day bus tour from San Antonio, Texas to Monterrey and Saltillo, Mexico and I just got back last night. It was a great experience. Almost everyone on the bus either had an ancestor who served in the war with Mexico (1846-1848) or was a historian for that period. Although most of us had never met, we each had something in common...the war with Mexico.

It was interesting to hear how a member found out their ancestor was in this war and what they knew about their ancestor. These stories alone would probably fill a book. One member’s ancestor was with a regiment that almost all died because of disease. Another member’s ancestor was a courier, carrying dispatches back and forth. My ancestor, Anthony Wilkinson was with the First Kentucky Mounted. His regiment didn’t get to Mexico until after the Battle of Monterrey and he was captured by the Mexican Army at El Encarnacion before the Battle of Buena Vista.

In Monterrey some of the streets and houses are almost like they were in 1846 when the American troops fought house to house against the Mexican Army. The original town Cathedral is still there and very beautiful. Also, the Bishop’s Palace is still there and its view helped us better understand the battle descriptions in books. We also went to Saltillo and saw where the Battle of Buena Vista was fought. Much of that land is as it was in Feb 1847. There is a marker which tells of the bravery of the Mexican Soldiers who fought and died there under the command of General Santa Anna, then President of Mexico.

I highly recommend membership in this professional organization. It has many scholars to draw more information from for beginners like me. They also are trying to identify where all the Mexican War Veterans are buried and making sure there is a grave marker. Just thought I’d share my experience with this organization. Sandy
I want to get a copy of a relatives Mexican War record. I have read that I need to know which state or unit he enlisted in and I don’t know. Maybe someone here knows. William WILKINSON b. 3 Aug 1820 d 25 May 1901, husband of Sarah E. Hollepeter served in the Mexican War. Does anyone know which unit or what State he signed up in?. He was living in Coshocton Co Ohio when he enlisted 1846-1847. Ohio doesn’t have a record of those who served in this war. We know his brother, Anthony enlisted in Kentucky and I have his info, but not William’s. Both survived and received land grants which were used to buy farm land in Iowa. Kind regards, Sandy

List of Mex War Pension Applications

I just found out there is a book which lists the names of all who applied for a Mexican War Pension. It is "Index to Mexican War Pension Applications" transcribed by Barbara Schull Wolfe, published by Heritage House, Indianapolis, IN, copyright 1985, Walter R. Gooldy.

I know it is easier to find information from your computer, but don't forget there is still a lot of information at local libraries and Genealogy Societies. You can look in some libraries' catalogue from your computer.

Also, if you know your ancestor served in more than one war, I recommend you first request the most recent record at the National Archives (www.nara.gov). Often the oldest record is consolidated with the more recent record.

Can anyone help me in getting back to either or both of these sites? Thanks, Fran

1846 news online: "Sumter Volunteers" arrive in Mobile en route to Mexico

Hi,

I just posted an old newspaper article reporting that the "Sumter Volunteers" regiment had arrived in Mobile, Alabama, on board the steamer Winona. They were on their way to the Mexican War. Officers mentioned were WINSTON, GIBBS and PRESTON.
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of the The Mobile Journal and register newspaper (Mobile, AL) dated May 26, 1846, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/sumtervols05261846mobal.html

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_al.html
http://theoldentimes.com/mexican_war_news.html
http://theoldentimes.com
Mexican War/Mexican Standing Army - Nathaniel Harris

My greatgrandfather was Nathaniel Harris, born in PA on 20 Feb 1830, died 26 Apr 1897 in Shrewsbury Twp, Sullivan Co PA. He served in the Civil War between Dec 1864 and July 1865. On his application for a disabled pension, he indicated that he had also served in the Mexican War. There is also mention of the Mexican Standing Army. Does this mean that the Mexican Standing Army served during the Mexican Army or ??. Also, where can I obtained a record of his Mexican War service?

Thanks for your assistance.

He was probably living in Georgia or possibly Alabama at the time of enlistment. Does anyone know of a good source of information where I might find any record of Samuel's service or death in the Mexican War?

Seeking information on Chihuahua's "Soldado Desconocido" of the so-called "Mexican War",. His name may have been Francisco Fierro (see Almada's Diccionario Chihuahuense). This soldado was probably a casualty of Doniphan's assault on Chihuahua. Where is he buried? Is his tomb located in a Chihuahua panteon? Possibly the same Panteon which General Villa had designated as the site (still extant) of his own tomb? Is there information available on Fierro's family or maternal surname?

I have the pension file from the National Archives for Morgan Bryan my ancestor. He enlisted in Pittsburgh, PA and was sent to Point Isabel. After that he served at Fort Pope as a wagon maker. He was transferred to the Pittsburgh artilary at Allegheny at the end of the war were he was mustered out. I can not find any reference to Fort Pope in the little I have found to read on the war. I have read "Pennsylvania in the War with Mexico" by Randy Hackenburg, but could find no reference to Fort Pope or my ancestor. Has anyone ever heard of Fort Pope? Were there troops that would be "Regular Army" and not show up in the volunteer listings? Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have just learned that my g.grandfather's brother, Thomas Jefferson Bridges, joined the volunteers and fought in the Mexican War. He was about 17 at the time, and his parents and siblings were enroute from GA, AL, and MS to Arkansas in a caravan. Thomas supposedly joined near Memphis, before they crossed the Mississippi on flat boats. This family originated in SC during the early 1800's, then moved to GA; Thomas could have been born in SC or GA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have just begun researching him, and don't have a clue as to where to go for records.

Thanks.

Mildred Brady Venitucci

My great grandmother was adopted by George Taylor (battle of Huamantia, 10-9-1847) and his wife Emeline, but I'd like to prove she was a dependent and actually adopted, rather than just an indentured servant. George and Emeline Taylor were later swept off the top deck of the SS San Francisco on Christmas Eve, 1853. He was Commanding Company A, Third Regiment U.S. Artillery at the time of his death.

why would an older man leave his family to fight in this war?

Question: in your opinion, why would a man with grown children leave his home to fight in the Mexican War? Do you think he was an enlisted volunteer, or is it more likely that he was career military? I am wondering because supposedly my ggggrandfather left his family in Ohio to fight in this war and never returned. I am trying to figure out why he would leave a comfortable home and leave his family at this time of his life. It might give me clues as where to look for him . Thank you.

Colored troops in Mexican War- Squire Young

I research Civil War soldiers, so I am a little out of my element.
I am involved in a restoration of an African American cemetery in Weaver,Indiana(Grant county). The WPA did a veteran burial registry of this cemetery in the 1930's to 1940's and it lists Squire Young as a Mexican War veteran. However, this cemetery is predominantly African American, with only one non-black burial known, that being of a Civil War veteran in the 89th IN Infantry.

My question is- Were there any black, colored,or mulatto troops in the Mexican War that served in the Regular Army or as Volunteers? I am assuming that Squire Young was from a state to the east and south of Indiana(maybe North Carolina, etc). The rosters of the Indiana units that served in the Mexican War do not list him.

I would appreciate any help with this.

Mark Davis
Hartford City,IN

Hi,

I just posted an obituary for L. L. GODFREY, a native of GA and a veteran of both theMexican War and the Civil War.

The obit says that he joined Capt. SUTTON's Company, Col. BELL's regt. of Texas Mounted Volunteers, crossed the Rio Grande with Gen.TAYLOR, and was took part in the capture of Monterey.

This was scanned from an original issue of the Kosse Cyclone dated January 13, 1916, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/lgodfrey16kosse_1.html

Other surnames include:

GODFREY, JENNINGS, BIGGS, SUTTON, BELL, TAYLOR, ROARK, DUNIGAN

I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com
http://theoldentimes.com/war_news.html

Vinson Cooley Co. F 4th U.S. Infantry

I was wondering if anyone out there can tell me if this soldier is the Vinson Cooley born in Massachusetts in 1801 or his son born in 1832 in New York state? The Vinson cooley in question later served in Battery A 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery in the Civil War. I am curious because it seems as if Junior is too young to serve in the Mexican War and Senior seems to be too old to serve in the Civil War. Any help that can help me puzzle this out would be appreciated.
