This is off the topic of Mexican War graves but I am hoping you can help me locate my GGrandmothers grave. I believe she died in the Marysville area between 1900-03. My GGrandfather returned to Kentucky with their two toddlers about 1903

Laura A (nee Blevins) Jestice/Justice
the wife of Hezekiah B Jestice and the dau of William & Oney Koontz Blevins. She was born in Missouri but I believe her parents were from Virginia and died in the Marysville area.

Thank you for any help.

Hi all,

I have an ancestor Isaac Sigler, Putnam County Indiana who enlisted, shot himself in the hand during a training exercise and was given a medical discharge. I find a congressional act for him in 1852 (pension). I cannot find him on any roster available to me. Would any of you have information on him? This would have occurred sometime between 1842 and 1848.

Thanks
Kate

Capt. Horace N. Attkisson was presented with a sword inscribed "for valor displayed, August 20, 1862," referring to an engagement he had with Morgan's Raiders. "A Chronology of Indiana in the Civil War," published by the Indiana Civil War Centennial Commission, says that the "residents of Nashville [TN]" presented him with the sword on Sept. 5, 1862, but I've been unable to find any corroborating evidence, as has a librarian at Middle Tennessee University. Does anyone have any such documentation?

Re: Drummed out! Who was it?

In the book "Hardtack & Coffee" by John D. Billings, he gives an interesting description of "Drumming out of camp." During the Civil War (and probably the Mexican War)it was punishment for cowardice in the face of the enemy. "At the earliest opportunity after the battle, he was stripped of his equipments and uniform, marched through the camp with a guard on either side and four soldiers following behind him at "charge bayonets," while a fife and drum corps brought up the rear, droning out the "Rogue's March." He was sure of being hooted and jeered at throughout the whole camp. There were no restraints put upon the language of his recent associates, and their vocabularies were worked up to their full capacity in reviling him. After he had been thoroughly shown off to the entire command, he was marched outside the lines and set free..." The facts were recorded on his regimental roll and liable to the death penalty if he showed up in camp again.

It looks like a courts martial would be the first order. Then if found guilty, punished.

For $25 you can request a copy of a soldier's military record and it may have more information. If a soldier was honorably discharged, he would be able to request bounty land. Some soldiers who were not eligible still applied for bounty land and there would be a record of it at the National Archives.
Sandy

There is a Robert Kunz who received an Invalid's penison, IC-3538 file #24669 for service as a Private in 4th US Inf. You can order the record for about $50 from the National Archives on line. An Invalid's pension is awarded to those who were injured or sick and could not work as an able-bodied man.

You could also request his bounty land record for about $25 which may or may not have any information about his infirmaties.

Thanks,
I know at the time of the Mexican war he was 42 years of age, and passed when he was 89 years old in 1893. From what I have found out is that he only served 2 years in the military and did not serve in the civil war.
I don't have my Ohio Regiment book with me. However, I did check my two Mexican War Veteran's Pension Index books for David Heckard. If he lived into the 1890's he would have been eligible for a pension. However, I did not find him listed as Heckard.

If he also served in the Civil War, his Mexican Pension record could be included in that one. I don't have the Civil War lists. Check with your library.
