Drummed out! Who was it?

In a letter dated May 2, 1847, Lt.Harrison Daily (Co., I, 3rd Ind.) wrote his father in Charlestown, "We drummed 2 men out of the division the past weekdue for stealing & the other for surrendering himself to the Enemy on the 23 Feby. One belonged to the Arkansas [Mounted Volunteers] & the other to the 2nd Ind."

My question is, who from the 2nd was drummed out in late April? From the AG reports, the following are possibilities:
Pvt. Andrew ROSS, CO. K, discharged April 10 1847
Sgt. Sylvester Riley, Co.I, discharged, no date specified
Pvt. George L. Esque, Co. I, discharged, no date specified
Pvt. James Halcomb, Co. I, discharged, no date specified
Capt. Thomas E. Vanfossen, Co. I, discharged, no date specified
Lt. George Foreman, Co. I, discharged by Court Marital, no date specified

Of these candidates, Lt. Foreman and or Pvt Ross seem the most likely. Can anyone elaborate on these people?

Thanks
John A-G

My ggrandfather, George Bishop, was a veteran for the Mexican War. In his obituary, it says he moved to Lafayette, Indiana. There are about 5 Lafayette townships in Indiana. However, the obituary states that he enlisted in the Mexican War in Fountain County, Indiana. He married his second wife in Indiana, Mary Cady Allen. Don't know parents, first wife or siblings!
I'd like to find which "Lafayette" he resided in and about the regiment he was enlisted in for the Mexican War. Any help would be appreciated and any family who I might find, please contact me.
This is the regiment/enlistment information about George Bishop.

Bishop, George - Service: Mexican War, Private, 5th Regiment, Company C, Fountain County. Mustered in 11 Oct 1847, at Madison, Indiana, by Lieutenant Rodman, mustered out 28 Jul 1848, at Madison, Indiana, by Major H. A. Goff. Source is Indiana in the Mexican War, Oran Perry, 1908.

Obit states: He was born on December 13, 1823 at Pickaway County, Ohio. When a boy he moved with his parents to Lafayette, Indiana, where he enlisted in Company C. Vol. Inf. 5th Regiment of Indiana, in the Mexican War.

I have a copy of a copy etc. of a letter written by Lewis Canter to his sister Elizabeth Canter describing their father's death during the Mexican - American War. There is no name for "Father" but a possible guess is Henry Canter. He joined the 2nd KY Rgmt under Capt. Calwell in Knox Co KY in the fall of 1846. Three months later he was ambushed and beaten in Vera Cruz. He lived long enough to dictate a letter to Capt. Calwell to be delivered to his family. He died the next morning, and was wrapped in bark peeled from a tree and buried on a sandbar at Vera Cruz.
His widow seems to have remarried, and moved to Howard Co, Indiana in 1852.
I am looking on information regarding his true name, date of birth and parents. I already have some info on his children.
Posey County Soldier in Mexican War

I am trying to unearth information about a Michael McShane who was likely the cousin of my great grandfather, both of them born in Ireland. If there's anyone out there with ready access to *Indiana in the Mexican War*--the Indiana Adjutant General's Report--could you tell me if Michael McShane from Posey County, Indiana fought in the Mexican War (as his obituary says he did) and in what unit? I would trust the obituary, which lists his Civil War service correctly, but I have seen a transcript of a naturalization application which indicates that Michael McShane did not arrive in this country until 1857. I know the man I'm looking for fought in the 10th Indiana Cavalry in the Civil War (125th Regiment), but I don't know what to make of this alleged Mexican War connection unless there were two Michael McShanes and only one of them made it into the Indiana census.

I'd very much appreciate any help.--Emily
emilymeier@juno.com

He didn't muster out at the end of the war, and was not with his wife in Washington Co.,Ark. in the 1850 census. I did find a Wilson D. Hart in Cameron Co., Texas in the 1860 census. Cameron Co. in in the very tip of Texas, next to Mexico. I am wondering if he just didn't come home after the war? Are there online records of the Ark. men in the Mexican War that I can search?

I am a researcher for all Voshell/Voshall-surnamed persons in order to clarify my own branch from Delaware. I am asking for any information on James P. Voshell that you may have. I need info on his family: wife and children, birth parents and siblings, his migration to Jefferson Co., Indiana presumably from Delaware, his military experience, and his life before and after mustering for the Mexican War.
I can pass on any other Voshell/Voshall info I have.

I am looking for any information on a James S. Wilder who served in the Mexican-American War. He was from Decatur Co., Indiana as far as I know.

My husbands great-grandmother was a Mary Frances Wilder and I am wondering if this could have been her father as his name was James. This family is a hard one to track any information down on.

He was from Indiana as some papers I have show. I have a copy of a letter from the Department of Interior--Bureau of Pensions--Old War and Navy Division, referring to a pension. The letter is dated May 29, 1903.

Here are some of the numbers on the letter.
Wid.Ctf. 12905.
Unv,Cft. 1707
James S. Wilder
I, 8 U.S. Inf.
Mexican War.

It seems as though there had been a question about the pension that maybe his widow was receiving or something.

Can anyone help out?

Thank you very much,
You can email me at ricdar@clarityonline.com
Darlene

Aside from applying to NARA, is there another way to corroborate his participation? How about anyone else whose ancestor was in this unit?

Looking for Ed Burns (William Wise Query of 1998)

Will Ed Burns, author of the following query from 1998, please contact me. Your email address no longer works and I believe our families are connected. Thanks.

In your webpage for Indiana soldiers of the Mexican War you list two individuals with the surname of WISE in the 3rd Regiment, Company E, Brown County. On my mother's side of our family tree there were numerous WISE individuals hailing from Brown County. There were both a William or Williamson WISE (first name listed differently in various sources, and a Mathew WISE in the same family. James WISE their father was a veteran of the War of 1812. William/son was born between 1815 - 1817, while Mathew is believed to have been born in 1825. This would certainly make their ages compatible with the Mexican War entries. The entire family is listed in the 1840 Census for Johnson Twp, Brown Co while they evidently moved to the Washington Twp of Brown Co prior to the 1850 Census. The fact they were from Brown Co also contributes to this potential connection with them and the Mexican War. Is there any way you know to determine whether these were indeed the same individuals ? Please let me know.

Josiah and Nancy ROOT had a son Dallas ROOT, born about 1847 or 1848 in Texas according to census records.
Stephen or Hale Chellis in Mexican War?

I am trying to find out if brothers, Stephen or Hale Chellis,
served in the Mexican War. They lived in the Ft. Wayne area at the start of the War. They would have been 19 and 17 at the time, and their Civil War records later on seem to indicate some prior service. Where to start? Drop a line if you have any info.

Charles Kelley from Tippecanoe County enlisted at New Albany Jan. 24, 1848 in Capt. Green's Company, Co. G of the 11th US Infantry. The war was practically over. He died July 9, 1848 at Jefferson Barracks, MO, after returning from Mexico. I cannot find any service record for him in the index microfilm at the National Archives. His widow did get his bounty land warrant (#74066). The only note on the pension file that refers to his posting or service says "sick San Juan." The family only learned of Charles' fate from a fellow soldier, William Mercer, with whom someone must have spoken, before he too died of "cholera." Can anyone help me find information on this unit, or where Charles might have served? What was the roll of Jefferson Barracks during the war and after?

In "Monroe County in the Mexican War" by H.C. Duncan (Indiana Mag of History, XII, No. 4, Dec., 1916) author states:
"...Austin Truitt at the Battle of Buena Vista, tore the flag which had been presented to the company by Miss Markle, from the staff, stuffed it in his bosom and carried it back seven miles to Saltillo..."

Anyone know anything more about Austin Truitt? Was the flag returned to Indiana? Has anyone seen a description of the flag (possibly printed locally when it was presented to the company in 1846)?

thanks.
John A-G
Balsam Lake, WI
