Thomas O'Connor, Spanish American War and records

Trying to find the military records for a Thomas O'Connor who served during the Spanish American War. He is listed in the Department of Veterans Affairs burial records. Buried in Cypress Hill National Cemetery, New York. Headstone has Battery G, 5th Artillery. A google search shows him on the rooster. Sent a request to NARA for service records and they replied there was no records for a Thomas O'Connor in this unit.

Any ideas on what I should do next?

help please - identify Sp-Am War uniform?

Attached are 4 pictures of Frederick Wheeler Palmer who was a sugeon in Cuba & Phillipines. Have tentaively identified 2 as Army V-Corps. The other 2 look to me to be some sort of dress uniform? He returned to MI after the war to join his father's practice but is found 1910 at Ft William Seward in Alaska and 1920 as a Col at Camp Travis TX. Not found in 1900 or 1930. Born in 1872, he is still young in the pictures. If the attachment doesn't work I can email them to anyone who might be interested in taking a look. OK to email me direct at karimagameel@yahoo.com. Thank you all very much! Vicky in AZ

The Spanish American War pension file of my great-grandfather, Charles H. Whiting, does not include a copy of his enlistment record. Does anyone know how to locate Spanish American War regular Army (not special volunteer units) enlistment papers? (He enlisted at St. Paul, MN.)

Also, could someone who's obtained an ancestor's regular Army enlistment papers please tell me what information the enlistment record would likely contain? (I'm hoping for his occupation and the name and address of next of kin or at least his address at time of enlistment.)

Thanks very much.

L.J.

Hello-
My great grandfather, Christ Schwarz, served in the Army during the Spanish American War in the Philippines. He was in Company K of the 13th Infantry Regiment, and his discharge record is issued by a Captain Smith of the 17th Infantry, dated 1903. I have a photo of Christ and some other men taken in the Philippines about 1899; if you have ancestors that might have served with him, I would love to hear from you. I would like to identify the other men in the photo. I have scanned the picture to show up at http://home.earthlink.net/~chellec/homepage and it is the third photo down. If you can help me out with more info about his service, I would appreciate it!

My husband's grandfather noted on the 1930 census for Noble Co IN that he was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. His name was Harvey Frary Smart, b 1879/80 in IL. The family later moved to Warren Co, IN, were he was living in 1900, he died in Nov. 1931 in Noble Co. IN. I do not know at the present time where in Noble Co he is buried. I have a copy of his WWI registration but was not able to find any pension records for the SP-AM War. I did a search of Indiana units and found only one Smart, first name Clarence. Can anyone help me find more information? Thanks in advance.

Pam

Walter Pleate - Oldest military veteran dies Dec. 5, 1985 in Lebanon, PA: FYI

Oldest military veteran in country dies at 109 - Walter Pleate

Lebanon, Pa.(AP)
Nearly nine decades after he fought in the Philippines and in the Boxer Rebellion, the United States’ oldest military veteran died Thursday at the age of 109, officials said.
Doctors at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center here said Walter Pleate died of bronchial pneumonia at 6:40 a.m.
“He just wouldn’t wake up,” said R.W. Mengel, a hospital spokesman. “The parts, just normally gave out, like a car.”
Born on Oct. 10, 1876, in Bridesburg, now part of northeast Philadelphia, Pleate enlisted in the Army on Feb. 24, 1899, said Al Mann, a VA spokesman in New York City.
The United States, which declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898, had ended its fighting in Cuba by August of that year. But until early 1902, U.S. troops continued battling guerrillas in the Philippines, where Pleate was sent with the rest of the 1st Company of the 2nd Infantry Division.
While in the Philippines, Pleate was an interpreter of Tagalong, a native language spoken by many Filipinos.
Pleate also fought in the Boxer Rebellion, an uprising in northern China started by a secret society angry at the intrusion of Western culture. Troops from the United States and seven other nations quelled the uprising.
Pleate was discharged from the Army on Feb 3, 1902, five months and a day before Congress officially declared an end to the Spanish American War.
With Pleate’s death, the oldest veteran is Christian F. Steinle of California, who is in West Los Angelas VA medical Center and turned 107 on May 3.
I found a bunch of old pictures when my grandmother passed away. She was very good at writing on the back of the pictures, so most of them are identified. There was one picture that I could not identify. It was of a young man in a uniform. I contacted someone and he told me the uniform was most likely from the Spanish-American War. The picture was taken in Highland Park, Illinois at Brand Studio's. The unit number on his hat is 4 and the company letter is F. I'm hoping someone can help me identify this young man. I have a copy of the picture on my computer so if anyone is interested in seeing the picture or hopefully can identify it, I am happy to send it to you.

Is there any information on line where I can see anything about Arthur Heney, who died during the SA war? He was born in 1857 in Quebec, Canada, moved to Alpena, Michigan, and was in the SA war. We're trying to find out anything possible about his service, but don't have a clue as to where to look. He died August 9, 1898, but I am not sure where.

I am looking for Frank Law who served in the Spanish American War. He was living in Macon Co, Alabama when he joined and was approximately 16. He returned home after the war "shell shocked", what we now call PTSD, and satyed for less than a year then left, supposedly for Mississippi to marry a widow with a lumber mill.

He was my grandfather John Law's oldest brother and the family completely lost track of Frank when he left Macon Co, Alabama the second time. John and Frank also had a brother named Menso Shelton aka Shelley and their father's name was Tom Law. Tom worked for a timber cutting company and supposedly moved there with Shelly and Frank and his pregnant wife abt 1890 from Georgia. Tom simply walked away and abandoned the boys to the Charlie Morgan family after his wife died.
to all that maybe interested. I found a scrapbook with clippings from the Spanish American War, primarily regarding the Oregon and Washington volunteers. I found this item in an antique store, and loaned it to a library in Oregon for while (since my mother was living there). It is now back with my family and would be willing to check on any relatives for anyone. Send me your question and ancestor name and I will see what I can find out.

The clippings also include obits, promotions, editorials, pictures of the locations in Phillipines, pictures of the US boats, and background info on some of the soldiers. I have not yet determined what newspaper(s) the clippings came from, but they are original.

Name Index to New York in the Spanish-American War now online.

The New York State Military Museum has just completed scanning and posting online the name index to New York in the Spanish-American War 1898. This rare index lists every man who served in a New York unit during the Spanish-American War. For each man you will find a name, the regiment he served in, the volume the regiment appears in and the page the man is listed on. The volume refers to New York in the Spanish-American War 1898 (prepared by the New York State Adjutant General's Office. Albany: J.B. Lyon, State printer, 1900). This is a three volume set which typically lists for each person: age, when they enlisted (when they signed up), when they mustered in (when they officially reported for duty), how long they agreed to serve for, their company and when and where they were mustered out of service. If the person died or was wounded this is also mentioned.

The index is at http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/spanAm/spanAm_i... .

It can also be found by going to:
http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/ and choosing enter, then choosing Unit History Project on the left, then choosing the Spanish-American War.

Questions can be directed to int-historians@ng.army.mil
Ernest De Vigne, Utah Any living relatives?

My grandfather served in the SAW as a volunteer from Utah. I inherited his medal(s) that was given by the state of Utah to it's volunteers. There were two of them..one with his name engraved on the name plate..the other had a piece of old white medical tape across the name plate with grandpa's name written in ink. Thinking this was very strange I removed the tape and the name of Ernest De Vigne was engraved on it. Was this man a friend of my grandfathers and was killed in the war? or what? If he has living relatives..they should have this medal. If anyone has any info on this I would appreciate it. I have many old letters I believe to be 'reunion' papers for those that served that were still living at the time but have not been able to find this gentlemans name on any of them. Any help is appreciated.

Obtaining Spanish American War Pension records from VA

Last year I sent for my ancestor's pension file for his Spanish American war service after finding him listed in the Civil War Pension Index. (this index also has Span Am war Vets names) The NARA informed me they don't have my ancestor's Spanish American War pension file, that it was with the VA, to write them with the folder number and request they do a BIRL search to locate it. I did this over a year ago and have heard back nothing, after sending out two letters to the VARO phrased exactly the way the NARA suggested. I'd love to hear from someone who has actually obtained a pension file from the VA. How long does it normally take to get it? HOW did you get it? When I called my local VA office the fellow had no idea what I was talking about. Has anyone had better luck tracking one of these files down when having to go through the VA instead of the NARA??
Thanks very much, Teri

Looking for information on CHARLEY M. JOHNSON or JONAS H. FARR. They were farriers in George Shanton's Troop C of Torrey's Rough Riders. This Charley Johnson is NOT the same man that married C. B. Irwin's daughter, Pauline. I have a copy of an article that was written and could have been read at George Shanton's funeral in 1930. The writer made reference to "growing up on the Chugwater" -- he, George & Harry Shanton went to school together; "as his farrier for all those years ..." This is important. I would like to include the article in a project I am compiling about some of the early families of Laramie, Wyoming. Would be nice to know who wrote this article. It is a wonderful story. He had a son Jesse Isaac Graves who was sent to Indiana and was raised by his aunt and uncle Martha and Joseph Gray. Jesse's mother and sister were supposedly killed in a wagon accident so he was orphaned by age 5. Have no records on his mother and father. Would welcome any help.
Thanks
I have a Spanish American war veteran ancestor who served on the USS Brooklyn. His name is George McHugh and he was born approx 1875. He was featured in a news article in the Brooklyn Eagle stating that he served on the Brooklyn during some skirmish with Cervera? Not sure exactly the skirmish involved. I'd like to find his records, but I'm completely clueless as to how to go about that. So if sks would like to take pity on me and tell me how I'd really, really appreciate it!

Liz

I am a member of the Manila American Legion Post 94 that has been approached to help find out who owns a recently located unkept cemetery in Manila comprised of American Volunteers during the Spanish American War. It seems the Japanese destroyed all local records so we are trying to find out who is responsible for the upkeep as some of the graves have been uprooted by robbers in search of valuables.

We have tried the US Embassy in Manila but to no avail as those records may have been destroyed as well and no one if quite sure where to look for this information.

Any ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated along the name of any groups that may have any interest in sponsering
caretaking of this cemetery?

Best Regards/ Leg. He is younger in the photo with crossed rifles on hat. On the back of photo of him leaning on fence, it says "Spanish-American War, Dearborn Rifles".
Janet Cosgrove

Military uniform? Circa 1880s or 1890s North Adams, Massachusetts

Please help me identify or learn more about this photo! I have an old photo of one of my ancestors that has been passed down to me. I believe he was a Cooney from North Adams, Berkshire, Massachusetts. I guess this would be from between 1870-1900. He stands in some sort of uniform holding maybe a bayonett but it doesn't really look like a weapon. There is a fake backdrop. And it has the name and address of the photographer, C. Bombadier, North Adams, mass. I am looking for clues or hep identifiying his outfit here and who he may have been. What this photo was for? etc. It is made of what seems to me to be some sort of cardboard like material.
I am not sure if this is a military uniform? or perhaps a secret society?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I tried to attach the photo but not sure if worked so I have put the photo online at the following link:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v693/e_dawg/NorthAdamsunif...

In 1900, he served on USS Celtic, and was later posted to the Rural Naval Station @ Culebra.

I have sent forms to NARA, and have been bounced back and forth between departments eachtelling me to contact the other.Has anyone else had this experience? The records have to be somewhere, but each dept. claims "no knowledge"
Thanks
Jeanne

Would "Co 5, US Cavalry" be a Spanish American War unit? This is from a tombstone with no other dates. The person in question was born in 1869, but I do not have a death date for him. He is not on the 1900 census, and I am wondering if he may have been a casualty of that War. Any ideas? His name was Patrick Neely and he is buried in Hollidaysburg, Pa. Thanks.

Hi Patrick,
My GGrandfather's alias name was Robert F. Lindsey(a)y I have a couple of different doc. that have both spellings. The date on his stone just says 1877 but other documents say anywhere from 1873 - 1878. I don't have his birth cert. every other doc. I have says he was born in different towns in Maine. He married in 1902 in Saco, Me. He was an electrician at different navy yards. (Portsmouth, New Hampshire). I believe he registered for the draft as well. I'm trying to find out why the alias? His death record and plot plan says he had one. He is buried at Laurel Hill Cem. in Saco, Me.
I really appreciate your help.
Donna

Advice Request - How to find a Spanish American War record

Would someone be able to give me a general idea of how to locate an ancestor's Spanish American War records? This is what I know - August J. Jermann was born in 1880 in Independence, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. I cannot find him in the 1900 or 1910 census, but in 1920 he was enumerated at Camp Pike, Arkansas as a Sgt. of Ordinance[?] The 1930 census finds him in Washington State and notes he was a veteran of both the Spanish American and World War I. He died in 1940 in a Veterans Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Ancestry.com has a database of Ohio soldiers in the Spanish American War, but I can't find him listed using any search variations I could think of. What would be a logical next step? I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you!
Claire

My family is in possesion of two flags that we believe to be from the Spanish -American War. My great-great-great grandfather was in the 8th regiment of the PA voluteers for the war. Anyone have any suggestions of where I may be able to go to find out or confirm any information about these flags? Or I would like my family to give them to a museum that could properly display and preserve them if they are authentic. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

His wilfe was Erma Gibbons who applied for a widow's pension and was granted one in July 1918. The pension record indicates he was in the 29th Inf., yet his grave is marked saying he was in Co. C, USS A.W. Can anyone point me to records about him and/or identify USS A. W. and whether that grave marker would would indicate his having been in the Marines or the Navy.

I just received my Great Uncle Wiley Z. V. Cox's military records from the National Archives. He died of malaria while serving with the 9th Infantry in Manilla. The records state that they send his remains to the U. S. Morgue in the Phillipines. The family has always said he was buried in California.

Does anyone know where most of the Spanish American War dead were buried after being sent back to the states? I know he was not buried in his home state of North Carolina.

Hello, all. I am working on a book regarding this war, specifically around the circumstances of one young man's death from typhoid. He died only days after the conflict ended, and it was in the hospital at Fort McPherson. I am trying to determine whether or not he is considered one the three thousand or so casualties of the war. All sources consider the deaths from disease as war casualities. My problem is that I cannot find a casualty list for this war. I've looked high and low with no luck. I would like to verify that this soldier is a wartime casualty. If anyone can point me in the direction of a list of those that gave their lives for this war, I would be grateful, as all I can come up with are just numbers.

Gene you are quick. 4th OH mustered at Columbus, in Franklin County where Canal Winchester is also located. I don't think the latter would be a place where a unit would be mustered. After assembling Edwins and Edwards, I may end up looking for Edward at NARA. Thanks again!

That's great! I've seen enough errors in all kinds of documents to know Edward could be Edwin. I know there were other Edwins in Ohio, even Edwin S.'s. Although I heard stories that he grew up in Canal Winchester, OH, I didn't find any of his family anywhere on the 1880 census. But his mother appeared there on the 1900 and 1910 censuses. He appeared on the 1910 census in New York as MacFadden with my Grandmother, father etc. He appears next on the 1930 census as McFadden with the young wife and family I had heard about. It showed he served during the SA War. I'll check further and try NARA again. By the way, where is such information available? Is there any way to know where the 4th OH was raised? Thanks, again.

My grandfather's name was Edwin Stanton McFadden or MacFadden, probably the former. I think he used the latter while married to my grandmother. He was born in Hocking County, OH on February 26, 1872> Igot the information from the Hocking County Clerk.

Sp-Am War - NARA wants more info than I have.

The only things I know about my grandfather are his name, DOB, birthplace (OH) and that my grandmother received a pension after he died, I guess. NARA sent me a form letter asking for all those things my letter told them I didn't have or know. What do I do to get the pension records? Thanks for your help.

Spanish American roster for 9th Mass infantry volunteers

I have a listing on a poster for company H of the 9th Massachusetts Infantry Volunteers. My grandfather was a member of this unit. He was from South Boston
and I presume some of the other names might also be
from there. The bottom of the poster says that they
were mustered in 10 May 1898 at South Framingham, MA.
The only information given is the names of the men
which include 92 privates and their officers.
Marianne
