Hello,
I had a Great Aunt by the name of Manila Philipena who was born on July 16, 1898, during the Spanish American War.
We have heard stories that were handed down from generation to generation that the United States Government during the Spanish American War had some kind of program in which any parents who had a female child during the Spanish American War and named that child Manila Philipena would receive a check from the United States Government for $10.00.
I was wondering if there is anyone out there who might be able to tell me if such a program ever existed, and if so any background information would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Keith Lawrence

k79lawrence@gmail.com
Nothing shows up in Army enlistment records. You would need to have a general idea when he enlisted and if he was a regular or a volunteer. Considering he was an officer have you tried the old records division in Washington DC?

Textual Archives Service Division of the National Archives in Washington DC.
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pr...

1st photo shows troops undergoing rifle practice, they're using Krag-Jorgenson rifles- the first repeater in general use by US troops. Do you know if he was a regular or a volunteer soldier, as volunteer units were still using Springfields for the most part.

2nd photo show a group of soldiers in US army khaki fatigue uniforms in the first row, and the blue wool service dress in the second row. What's interesting is the man in the upper right has cavalry insignia on his hat, and the middle man has what looks like a regimental number and a company letter on the collar points of his uniform. 25th maybe? Wisconsin only enlisted infantry and an artillery battery for the war, so he may be a veteran who reenlisted and was wearing his old uniform considering he's wearing a medal.

3rd photo is of an encampment.

4th photo is of an encampment with the boys acting out an amputation scene.

If you have a name he may have served under, it would help to post it. Also you can order pre-WW1 military records from

the Textual Archives Service Division of the National Archives in Washington DC.
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pr...

Wisconsin records-
http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/military/spanish_american_wa...

Attached are 4 pictures of my Grandfather Ed Ahrndt who ran away from home at age 14 and we believe he may have used a dead brother's name and birthdate to join the Army in 1898. We know little of his exploits, other then that after training, they boarded a ship to go to war and the war ended before they got there. I wondered if anyone can give me any info on where they may have been trained, uniform information, the IRR lettering on the tent in the one picture, ect. My Grandfather was from Two Rivers, Wisconsin and I assume he joined up somewhere in Wisconsin. Thanks for any clarification you can help with.

Gary Ahrndt

Trying to track down the location where my wife’s great uncle would have seen his military service. He is listed as belonging to the “43rd Company of the Coast Regiment of Artillery” during the Spanish American War. His dates of service were Jan 1899 to Jan 1902, so it would more likely be during the Philippine American War. Not having much luck finding history on this Company prior to WWI.
The NARA has Spanish American War Pension Cards on the microfilm Titled "U.S., Civil War Pension Index: General Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934"
Ancestry has images of this microfilm and Thomas H McEldowney with widow Erma has Thomas H on second line as a "alias" and the name his records maybe under is Herschel McEldowney. Erma filed in Ohio and the units written on card "Cas Detch. & C&H 29th US Infantry.
As Herschel McEldowney Ancestry has databases "U.S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry", "U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914" (enlisted PA) Nand "U.S., Returns from Military Posts, 1806-1916" (has middle initial G returned 1904 to Military Post: USA General Hospital, Presidio, San Francisco, CA, he was also discharged from the Army at the Presidio)

A family tree online has he died in Salem, Columbania County Ohio.
1910 Census Thos and Erma are "Roomers" living in Youngstown. Mahoning County OH. Ancestry has a space between MC and Eldowney for 1910 census search so search McEldowney and Mc Eldowney to find all records, at least with Ancestry.
Look in Columbiana and Mahoning County for burial.

The Spanish-American War actually went longer than the conflict in Cuba. The famous battles in Cuba were just one theater of operations for the war. The Philippine Insurrection was another. The intent of the war was to drive the Spanish influence from the Western Hemisphere.

The soldier that this lady is asking about would have been credited with Spanish-American War service for serving in the Philippine Islands. The action there lasted until about 1902.

First, do you have a birth date for him? Also you can check here for any records of pre-WW 1 service. Contact the old records division in Washington DC-
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pr...

Virginians served in four volunteer regiments, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th Virginia Regiments. The Virginians who volunteered
expected to see active service as a part of the Volunteer Army of the United States, but few of them ever reached Cuba. Of the
four regiments, only the 4th Regiment was sent to Cuba, and only for a short time following the signing of the Treaty of Paris,
which officially ended the war. For a detailed account of the service of the Virginia Volunteers during the Spanish-American
War, see the United Spanish War Veterans, Department of Virginia, Annual Report of the Department Historian (E714.3 U7).

I can't comment on the commonality of aliases, but I can note that my grandfather Herbert C. Thomas enlisted, underage, as Harry Thompson (sic ?). He was apparently only 16 and was eventually discovered. There are two known color pictures of him in his uniform. One was in the possession of John, his son, deceased, and/or John's son Jamie/Jaime, last known to be in Veedersburg, IN, area.
This picture or a copy is very much desired.

It is also possible that your ancestor named Louis Hansen has been confused with some other. The Louis Hansen who served in the G 3 IL Infantry in the Spanish-American War is a pensioner. You can see his pension card on the Index to Civil War Pension Files at ancestry or familysearch. Spanish-American War pensioners were included on that index, even though it doesn't come right out and say so. SA War pensioners have a tiny handwritten "s" on the pension card after the word "invalid".

The soldier who served in the G 3 IL Inf applied for pension in March of 1922 while living in the state of Michigan. There are about 5 "Louis Hansen" on the microfilm of pensioners, and maybe more who served and were not pensioned. You might want to check all of them and make sure which one is yours before ordering a pension file. I didn't look at all the cards to see who was CW and who was SA. The pension file at NARA would certainly give you a positive ID on the soldier one way or the other.

Best wishes.

To answer your first question, technically Spanish American War service was considered any time between 21 Apr. 1898 and 4 July 1902. If he was stationed in the Moro Province of the Phillipines, the date is extended to 1903. So he does fall within the dates to be considered a Span-Am War veteran.
The 3rd Ilinois was a militia regiment, what to day would be the National Guard. He might have had a sponsor or family member already here enlist him in the unit. That would make him more likely to pass the immigration inspectors if he had no money upon arrival, but he had papers showing he had a job and sponsor waiting for him. Or the dates could be slightly off.

Hi, I am a little confused about the enlistment of my grandfather, Louis Hansen (aka Laust Fredrick Hansen). These are the facts that I have found documents for:

He immigrated to the US on August 20 of 1901.
His enlistment is June 30, 1901.
He was discharged April 30, 1903.
His headstone lists that he was in the Spanish American War as part of the 3rd Illinois Infantry, Company G.

I also know that the Spanish American War lasted from April-August 1898.

Here are the questions:

Why would he be credited with serving the Spanish American War if he didn't enlist until 2 years after it was done?

Was it common/possible that foriegn soldiers enlisted before immigrating?

Thanks,
Edith

The "Hospital Corps- United States Army" would be the major command he was assigned to. It would equal someone being in the Coast Artillery but being assigned to "119th Coast Artillery- C Battery". You would normally enter military assignments like this, "A" Company, 15th Medical Company, 8th Field Hospital, Hospital Corps, US Army.

hello again. sorry but not coi but dont bother much with any church. dont really need a middle man . the two sisters almost certainly died of tb which was still a major threat since the famine and wasnt eradicated completley until around 1910/1912 according to any reading i have done on the topic. my grandfather and two of his sisters were the only survivors from his family as children. two others died from tb when infants. most graveyards around the country show a similar pattern during this period. females were more at risk as they tended to work at home with the mother or in factories with other women and would have picked up the illness from breathing in the spores. men tended to work on the land and the outside life may have kept them less at risk. poor housing , damp and cold and poor nourishment all increased the chances . girls were second to eat in lots of households as the men were givin priority as they did more manual labour according to researching history books regarding this period. the girls were under nourished and this weakened them more. a local historian from lurgan called frank mc corry published a book a few years back about all the churches and chapels in north armagh .it covers build dates and details of architects involved and which churches in england were built from the same plans or vice versa. ardmore church is well covered in the book .regards gerard.

There is an army enlistment record for a Walter V. MCoy. Enlisted in "L" Battery, 2nd US Artillery on 18 June 1898 at Jersey City, New Jersey. Listed as a 21 year old student. He was discharged in the Phillipines on 12 May 1899. There is also a pension card for him, looks like he filed for a pension around 27 Mar. 1918.
You can send away for his military records, but you will have to order them from the old records branch that handles pre- WW1 military service.
http://www.archives.gov/research/order/order-vets-records.ht...

Here's a page explaining how to order his pension files-
http://www.spanamwar.com/geneaol2.htm#Finding info.

Hi Gerard,

It was the KIA Manila that caught my eye when I started delving into my family history. The family lived in a farm about 1/2 miles from the church along the lough road (don't know its proper name - if you imagine the church then it's the road that runs along the RHS of the graveyard to wards Lough Neigh). If you are CoI an interesting aside is Robert Davids cousin was Archbishop James McCann, primate of all Ireland in the 1960's. Also, I've always wondered what illness caused the two sisters to die within a month of each other. We are so lucky to have eradicated so many illnesses that were deadly back then.

John

what a wonderful medium the internet is. i was out for a walk this evening with my daughter and stopped to wander around the graveyard at ardmore church ,which is 4 miles from lurgan co.armagh n. ireland. i noticed this headstone of the mc cann family and the killed in action inscription caught my eye. i have a strong military history from my mothers side of the family so i guess this is where my interest in warfare history stems from. i was intrigued how a man from these parts found his way to manilla in 1898 as it was not a place where you would immediately expect to find an irish man dying. knowing it was too early to be the first world war i googled the name robert david mc cann and was amazed to find his american army link. i live a half mile from the churchyard and never noticed the inscription until now. its a long way from home even in modern times but to die alone so far from home in 1898 must have been terrible.robert died on 5th august 1898 aged 27 years. it also lists his 2 sisters , johanna who died on 27 april 1870 aged 5 yrs and mary sophia on 6th may 1870 aged 6 years. robert was born the following year 1871 being 27 years old when he died in 1898. his father edward died 24th jan 1885 aged 66 yrs and his mother sophia died 19 feb 1891 aged 59 yrs according to the headstone.

Trying to Identify Walter Vincent McCoy's Spanish American War Service Record.

He enlisted in the Army in 1898. I know he came down sick and spent time in Long Island recovering from Yellow Fever.

I have a bunch of medals from my Great Aunt (who I discovered at age 89 through Ancestory.com) from all of his visits to the various camps and meetings.

I believe he was either part of the NY (Bronx) group or New Jersey.

Any thoughts on how to find his records?

Thanks,

Dave

I found him buried in grave #1 in Cardenas, Cuba. His remains couldn't be returned because he was serving under an assumed name with no relatives listed. Thank you for your ideas......
