Court Martial. 2nd Btn, Border Regt in India c1898.

According to his Short Service record, Pte 4430 Henry Reay was in India between Feb 1896 and Mar 1902, after which the btn was posted to South Africa. Family lore has it during his posting in India he was Court Martialled for apparently killing an Indian servant, allegedly in self defence, for which he received a nominal detention. Nothing on his service record to indicate this other than several 'forfiet G C pay's.
My question is, even before I begin looking up CM's at Kew, could anyone advise me where in India 2 Border Regt may have been in this period? Any other tips appreciated.

You should be able to order the microfisch from your local LDS office - you will have to order it 1st but they charge only a tiny amount for this - you can also order a print out - the reference you need is:

batch No. P021211
Dates: 1619 - 1875
Source Call No. 0229173
Type: Film
Printout Call No. 0820914

however, dont expect toooooooo much info as prior to Sep 1837 nothing was mandatory and it will be as good, or bad, as the (then) record keeper. Some were excellent, others left a great deal to be desired...

the other 2 Cattell's are on the same reference

Hopefully, it wil confirm dads occupation etc to tit in with the census I found

Good Luck

Ell

Hi EllinSpain...

Thank you so much for this information. This definitely appears to be my great great grandfather! I hope I can trouble you with one question. I'm new to this geneology research. For most of my searches I've been using the Free BMD for England/Wales but their records only go back to 1837. As William was born in 1830 do you have any suggestions of how I would go about finding his birth certificate? I'm in Canada so anything I do is long distance. Thanks, Brigid.

The British Army World War One Service Records are War Office (WO) records also known as the WO363 records and the ‘Burnt Documents.’ In 1940 there was a World War Two bombing raid on the War Office in London where the records were held. During this raid, a large portion (approximately 60 per cent) of the 6.5 million records was destroyed by fire. The surviving service records have become known as the ‘Burnt Documents’.

Although many of these records suffered water damage following the bombing raid, all surviving service and pension records were microfilmed by The National Archives, where both collections are held, as part of a major TNA conservation project.
A total of 16 men were killed from the East Surreys in that house. 11 of them are buried in North Cemetery Bournemouth.

If anyone who knew my uncle or had relatives who may have known or pictures of the ESR in that period, could get in touch, I'd appreciate it.

Mr Great Grandfather Patrick Culleton was born in Clonmel County Tipperary on 30th April 1893 to parents William and Mary Culleton (nee Roache). William was described as a Soldier on Patricks birth certificate. I was wondering if anyone would be able assist or provide some information as to how i would go about finding out about Williams military records including the Barracks at which he was posted? He may have been posted to Barracks in Liverpool, England although the family did emigrate, eventually living in Glamorgan Wales.

Many thanks

Vicky

Some 70% of WW1 service records were destroyed in WW2. Of those that remain Ancestry have surnames A-N, and the rest "will follow soon". All the records are available (for free) at TNA, and copies cane be made there.

The Medal Index Cards are also not yet complete here, but the TNA has the full set and these can be searched on-line. Sadly your man does not instantly spring out. There is a William Staite who was in the Worcestershires, and later the Labour Corps. Could the family legend have been a bit 'stretched' do you think?

Irishman described as "soldier" pre-1912 would be in regular British Army?

My g-grandparents married in December 1912 in Leeds and my Irish g-grandmother describes her father as deceased and a soldier.

Am I right that at this period that would make it likely he was in the British Army, and should I therefore start with the discharge papers in WO 97/2172-WO 97/6322 in the hope that he didn't die in service (and if he did die in service, is there anything I can usefully look at as I know he's unlikely to be in WO97 in that case)?

Hello Phil.

Coincidentally, I had uploaded some pictures of the headstones in Bournemouth North Cemetery to Picasa/Google, about 10 minutes before I received notification of your reply here.

I'll re-read my original post but my uncle was a regular, was in India pre-war - I've got a few photos - and also came home with the BEF. I understand that very few, if any of 'D' Co. survived the war, as 'D' Co. was wiped out at Fort McGregor in North Africa in 1943?

William Cattell (1829-1919) was appointed Assistant-Surgeon on March 28th 1854, and soon thereafter took part in the Crimean War with the 5th Dragoon Guards, being present at the battles of Balaklava, Inkerman, Tchernaya, and Siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medal).

He was promoted to Surgeon on July 12th, 1864, and left the 5th Dragoon Guards to be appointed Staff Surgeon at the Cape of Good Hope.
On November 16th 1866, he was appointed to the 20th Foot. The 2d Battalion of the Regiment was in the Cape Colony c. 1867, and shifted to Mauritius in 1870. We do find William Cattell in Mauritius in 1870 with the 2nd Battalion of the 20th Foot indeed. The Battalion will come back to England in 1872, reaching Queenstown on board the Troopship Tamar on January 25th. William Cattell will be appointed from that Regiment to the 10th Hussars on December 10th, 1872.
He soon left with the Regiment for India, being on board the Jumna on the occasion of her departure from Portsmouth for Bombay on January 10th 1873. The Times reported among the 10th Hussars"Surgeon Callett" (sic), but also "Madame Callett and three children".
He held the relative rank of Lieutenant-Colonel from March 28th 1874.
William Cattell was also a botanist ; he was elected an F.L.S. (Fellow of the Linnaean Society) in 1878, and collected plants along his various postings.

He will be appointed Brigade Surgeon at Aldershott, on November 27th 1879. This appointment is administrative at first, as he will only reach England on April 16th 1880, arriving at Portsmouth on board the Indian Troopship Malabar.
This will not be the end of his travels, as he will be appointed principal medical officer of the forces in Canada in January 1882, following some service at Malta !
On April 18th 1882,he will be gazetted Deputy Surgeon-General (dated 12th March).
Deputy Surgeon-General William Cattell will be placed on retired pay on December 4th 1889 (dated November 23rd).
His memoirs are held within the Royal Army Medical Corps "Muniment Collection".

+
DEPUTY SURGEON-GENERAL WILLIAM CATTELL, R.A.M.C.
(retired), who died on March 20thi at the age of 89,was one
of the last survivors of tle Crimean war. He was born at
Castle Bromwich, Warwicksliire, on November 23rd, 1829
alnd took the M.R.C.S. in 1853. He entered the army as
assistant surgeon on March 28tTh, 1854, became surgeon on
March 28th, 1866, surgeon-major on April 1st, 1873,
brigade surgeon-when that rank was first instituted-on
November 27tlh, 1879, and deputy surgeon-general on
March 12th, 1882.
My Great Grandfather William Owen Staite , who occasionally used the surname Staite-Hopkins, was in the Royal veterinary Corps during the first world war.

His date of birth was 1895 but i think for some reason he may have given it as being 1896, he was born in Worcestershire and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Staite.

I know that during 1917 he was in the Abbville area of France.

What I would like to know is where he enlisted, would he have been attached to another regiment and where I can find his service records as so far I have drawn a blank?

I would be very grateful for any help

Many thanks

Liz

I believe my grandfather was cashiered in the early 20th late 19th Century. His name was Chalmers or Limond. He was definitely Limond afterwards but think he changed it to be anonymous. Came from India, I believe! Are there any resources out there that would give details of people cashiered.
