I have possibly just located the record of my relative, Denis Moore on the list of Army Deserters (1828-1840).

It reads: Name Denis Moore alias-Corps 77th Foot Age 22-Origin-, Clonena, Queen's (LEX), IRL 9 Aug 1839

I can't figure out if this name is the man's alias or the word alias denotes a possible alias not listed.

Are there records that would cover this service period to determine if he served with the 77th under this name?

Thanks for any help!
Brenda Perkins

EDMONDS - 40th Foot Reg - Second Somersetshire 1820

Can anyone help me locate muster records for Charles Edmonds of the 40th foot, the Excellers- Second Somersetshire? I have no idea how old he was when he joined up but it was when he was 21 years old - which he was in 1820 or earlier.

My Charles Edmonds was born 17 Oct 1799 in Isle Abbotts, Somerset. His father was Samuel Edmonds, who was a poor farmer. His mother was Jane Morris, I believe or Honor Hector.

The Manchester Cathedral marriage certificate between Charles Edmonds and Mary Ann Grundy dated 18 Oct 1820, lists his occupation as Private, 40th Foot. When his first daughter is baptized in 1825, his occupation is Maker up which is a tailor of sorts, I believe. From what I understand, the 40th Foot took off for Australia in 1824 so I assume Charles 5 years volunteer service were over? At some point, Charles became paralyzed in his legs and used two canes to get around. As the requirements for service in the military seemed to be signing a statement that your limbs were sound, it must have happened either during some military engagement or afterwards.

How would a poor farm boy from Somerset have entered the 40th foot? Would the war with Napoleon resulted with notices for volunteers being tacked up on the local church door or tavern? Are there discharge papers I can scour?
I need to find his original muster records and if he was injured, some record of that.

Can anyone please help me?

Most sincerely,
Lorna Rosenstein

Hi,

Can any military experts help me with this.

We have a Thomas Walker who is married in 1860 to Sarah Jessie Hutchinson in India. Sarah’s father was at the time a Private in the 68th Regiment of Foot.
In 1861 Thomas is a Corporal in the 68th Foot when his son is born in Rangoon, Burma
by 1869 he is a Sergeant Major in the 68th Regiment of Foot when his other son is born in Jamaica, West Indies.
After that we have no information of Thomas as Sarah and the children return to Perth Scotland.

Am I right in thinking the 68th Regiment of Foot is one of the early regiments of the Durham Light Infantry.

Is there any way of finding out more about Sergeant Major Thomas via the internet.?

Les Pearce
________

Does anyone have any detailed information on the 11th Foot Regiment? Many soldiers from County Armagh served in this regiment during the campaigns against Napoleon. I have found some evidence that the 11th Foot was probably the 1st or 2nd Battallion of the 11th Foot 'Devonshire Regiment'. It appears they were in Ireland in the early 1800's

Hi, am trying to trace a birth for someone called Archimedes Connor who was born in Poona circa 1873, I know from a later census in the UK he was an army student so am working on the theory that his father would have been stationed in Poona with the army in 1873 so am trying to establish which Regiments were based there during this period. Does anyone know or know where I could look for the answer. Thanks.

I understand that he recuperated in Scotland and then went back to the front, he was demobbed in March 1919. He came from Limavady, Co Londonderry and was in the Signal Section of the 10th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. His service number was 15810. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of where I may be able to find out the following information:

1) Where he recuperated in Scotland
2) When he went back to the front.

Thanks

Catherine

Waterloo database

In response to a few enquiries about ancestors at Waterloo, I have a completed database of British combatants in the campaign of 1815. It is compiled of all WO97 (discharge documents), WO12 (pay musters) and WO25 (casualty rolls) kept at the PRO at Kew. In addition there is masses of biographical information from a number of other sources including regimental museums and the National Army Museum.

There are 39,000 men on this database and it is possible to search by name of the individual or place.
The database has also been crossreferenced with the medal rolls for both Waterloo and the the MGS (Peninsula medal).

I will be happy to answer any queries and would also be very interested in receiving any information on individuals which I might be able to add to the database.

The more the merrier!

Regards

Mike Ryko

The English census just says 'Scotland' which is a bit vague. Any info greatly appreciated.

Any idea of any other Churches of this type in that area that I should check

Thanks,

Dee

lance corporal in the British Army

I am researching an ancestor that was in the british army. He was at one point a "lance corporal". The explanation I received was that this was an enlisted man's non-commissioned officer's post. Would this make him simply "enlisted", or an "officer". This is important in the WO records.
Hi,

Having followed the advice given by JeffH01 I have located a pensioner record that I believe is one of my ancestors.

However, the information that I have and that given in the search differ.

The DOB is right and the name is more or less right as Etteridge rather than Etheridge. However, his place of birth is listed as Elborton, Norfolk whereas my ancestor is from Yelverton, Norfolk. The names sound alike and I was wondering if this is likely to have been an error? It seems likely to me as I can not find an Elborton in Norfolk.

An ancestor may have been in the Royal Artillery in the 1790's and early 1800's. Could someone please advise where I would be able to find his service details or who to contact? (I am in New Zealand so unable to visit any museums/libraries.)

His name is Alexander Gove. I believe he was born in Scotland approx 1771.
In 1798 and 1800 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, 2 of his children were baptised and these records state that Alexander was in the Royal Artillery.

The family must have moved back to Scotland after Alexander left the service as his daughter was married in Scotland in 1822 and Alexander himself and his wife Ann are in the 1841 Scottish census, (Alexander now being an ag labourer).

Was this usual that a Scottish person could serve in the Royal Artillery and serve in England, in this case Northumberland? Also was it usual for his wife to follow him while he served in England? (His wife was also Scottish).

Any help would be appreciated in tracking down Alexanders' service details and also info on why he would have served in England.
Thanks in advance.

I need help in finding the military records of Sgt. George Pearce. When he died in Toronto Canada in 1913 he was given a gun carriage funeral. A newspaper account from that time advised that Sgt Pearce" was in charge of a gun section of the battery that supported Lord Cardigan's Light Brigade in their charge at Balaclava in 1854."
It further reports that he served in the Royal Horse Artillery though the Crimean War and came to Canada about 1866.
Another newspaper report suggested that the veterans association felt that Sgt. Pearce was possibly the last survivor of Balaclava.
This is the only information we have.
Can someone advise us as to where to begin in our search?
Am I correct in thinking a Sgt. is an officer?

We wondered if his name would be on any war memorial and if so which one. Does anyone know how it would be possible to find out any details about this man's death or marital status prior to 1917 - we have a photograph of him with 'Nancy' but do not know who she was. Cannot find any record of a marriage. Charles was born in Yorkshire and his family are all from that area (North Yorkshire). Any information or advice would be gratefully accepted.

Hi, According to various records I've found from the PRO,
my ancestor Francis McCabe received a (Chelsea Hospital) pension for his service in British Army in 1815. I also found an entry in records that showed he was receiving payments at the time of his death in 1862 in Ontario Canada.

Are there records that show where he received his pension payments for the years 1815-1830. I believe he went back to Monaghan Ireland and then immigrated to Canada in 1827. In Ireland would he have to go to Dublin to get his money?

I'm hoping that pension receipts can help verify genealogy info.

thanks for any help
tom mccabe
LIND, officer in the British Army in South Africa, Sois River / Quaen Forest 1899 / 1900

My friend recently came into posession of a list of addresses for her great grandfather and siblings as of 1899/1900. His name was DOUGLAS ALEXANDER LIND with the address of "Quaen Forest, nr. Sois River, South Africa". We know he was an officer in the British Army but do not know his regiment nor where/when he died. He was born in 1867 at Warwick, England.

We have not been able to locate any reference to either of these locations and hope that someone on this list can help. We have contacted the Anglo Boer Museum and they suggested the Soutrivier (Salt River). They found no reference to Quaen Forest (or Queen Forest). I found one reference on the internet for a Soisons River, Transvaal but no further information. If this was his address one would think it would have been an army post of some sort.

We would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be able to shed light on Douglas, Sois River, or Quaen Forest.

Thank you.
The Irish in the Zulu wars

I'm searching for information on Rt Hon. Sir John Gore MOORE of Laois, Ireland. Allegedly he went to South Africa to fight the Zulus (ca 1890's) and died at Amatikulu, which is north of Durban. I can find no record of him in the big battles, e.g. Isandlwana. Being "titled", would he have been an officer? Does anyone know of any databases for British soldiers killed in South Africa during the Zulu wars?

He left behind an illegitimate son, John Pierce MOORE.

Can anyone tell me where I would start searching for records for my ancestors who came from Waterford City. I have no information about their military service, I know they served in the British Army and would have enlisted from their home town. The information I am seeking is for World war 1 and 2.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Catherine Warrell

British Troops in Cork 1927

I have a problem with my wife's family. Her mother was born in Co Cork in 1927, the daughter of a British soldier serving in the Royal Engineers and an English woman who was the widow of one of his colleagues. They married later in the same year in Lewisham, when he was based at Woolwich. I am just wondering how I can find any details of British troops based in Southern Ireland after 1922 and why my mother-in-law's birth was never registered in the UK.

She was burgled some years ago and lost all her documents. I know she found some difficulty getting a British passport as she had to get her birth certificate from Ireland, and she was classed as a British Subject, not a British Citizen

Meaning of 'CB' in Army Service Records?

Hi,

I've spent much of this afternoon reading the WWI service record of quite a rather colourful family member who was court martialed on three occasions and had numerous other minor misdemeanors. It's been quite an interesting read! Now following all of the minor infractions, for example "30th May - Improper conduct on active duty. Discharging his rifle while on outpost duty at the Oil Tanks" it's then followed something like "7 days CB"

My question is, what does CB stand for? My best guess is 'confined to barracks.' Has anyone else come across this term???

Becky

Hi
I have a photo that shows that my father in law served in the 17th London Regiment in WW1. I also saw that this is what they call a "territorial"regiment? Any ideas what that means. We have his medals from France and I know he was wounded in France and Belgium and sent back to Scotland and then went back to fight guess, but not a lot more. He signed up when he was 16 saying that he was 18 but I do not know a lot more about the Regiment.Only thathe signed up in Essex.
Any help out there as to what they might have done, where and why etc.
Thanks

Help with army record abbreviation

Hi, I have my g-grandfather's service records (RE's, 1894-1916)and I am curious about the 'Battalion or Depot' abbreviations. From 1902 he was a staff sergeant, but under Battalion it says 'Supt. List'. I think it says Supt., but I may be wrong. Also in 1909 he was court martialled and 'reduced' in rank, where that is noted it says S.S. in the Battalion column. Can anyone help with these abbreviations please?

Anybody know if army personnel required a passport before being shipped out to the likes of South Africa and China?

I ask because passport applications are now searchable. Grandfather joined the Middlesex regiment before 1900 then got called up as a reservist for WWI. Naturally they dusted off his records, which were then blitzed in WWII.

Gabriel LE PIPRE - identifying potential records

Through various sources I have identified that Gabriel LE PIPRE / LEPIPRE was a captain in the English Army in the 1720s-1750s.

1) Exact period unknown, however he was in Tower of London guard at some point in the 1740s [Diary of Lt-Gen Adam Williamson]
2) In 1753, appointed to the Independent Company of Invalids in Pendennis [London Gazette]
3) Reference to a diary held in the Gloucestershire Record Office (requested photocopy of the document).

Beyond those snippets, I am uncertain in how to proceed to get more information. Or even if there is more information available. The Invalids company possible became the 41st Welsh Regiment, however, the regiment of Tower of London is not anything that I have been able to identify.

Genealogically, Gabriel married Elizabeth Clarke/Clerke at Saint George Mayfair, Westminster, London, in 1749, a son born in 1751, and died about 1754.
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~hobby

Regards Andrew
William D. CATTELL, Surgeon-General RAMC

I'm trying to find information regarding my great grandfather, William D. Cattell but I'm not sure how to proceed. He served in Crimea, South Africa, India and Afghan. He retired in 1889 and died on March 20, 1919. He was buried at Hove (England) with a full military funeral (I have a copy of the newspaper article).

I also have an article from the London Times - Wednesday, Jan 18, 1882: Brigade-Surgeon W. Cattell, recently serving at Malta, has been appointed principal medical officer to the forces in Canada, in succession to Surgeon-General J S Furlong, resigned.

I'd like to find his military records and ultimately his birth record as I'm "stuck" and can't get further back in my family tree search. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I do know he married Caroline Pickering Goodricke. This was supposed to have taken place in Halifax, Nova Scotia in January 1867 but I can't find this record either!

Regards, Brigid Flipse (nee Cattell).
On my grandmothers birth cert(1894) it states her father, Henry Holland, was a Warrant Officer 5th company ASC. I know from several extracts I have from the ASC Journal that he was Acting Staff Sgt Major 5th Co ASC. However when his death (1898) was announced in the journal it says 4th Co ASC & his death cert only says Staff Sgt Major ASC. Is it the same man? I'm pretty sure it is but though he is Henry on his birth & death certs he is Harry on the relevent census returns & SSM H Holland in the journal. {I know Henrys call themselves Harry.} His wife Anne is a widow on the 1901 census & an entry in the journal for the birth of a daughter fits in with my grandmothers birth as does the mention of his funeral where it says he leaves 3 children & a wife. Though he actually had 4 children, the eldest,Francis, was by this time at the Chelsea Military Asylum.

Imperial Army - early 1800's - what country?

I have a death cert. for my GGG grandmother, Elizabeth Warren nee MacLauglan. Her Father is James? MacLaughlan who is believed to have been a Sergeant in the Imperial Army. Elizabeth was born in Malta in 1822, so I assume James may of served there with the Army? They immigrated to Australia in 1837 where they settled.

Is the Imperial Army something that the English Army may have been called at the time?? If not what country had an imperial army around the early 1800's. I am assuming they were English citizens as there were no formalities in coming to Australia hence no records.

I would be very grateful for anyone that could shed some light on this, as I may then be able to find some type of record if I know what Army I am looking at.

Thanks in advance

Kate

Hello
I have a great grandfather who enlisted in the Army Service Corps Special Reserve in 1913. I have his WW1 record which shows that he was discarged in 1915 "under Para 154 (XII) SRR 1911"
Can anybody give any help as to what this means.
Thank you
Rod Day
