The National Archives lookup request: MARCHANT or DENLEY in Register of Seamen

Requesting lookup at the National Archives in the BT349,
Register of Seamen, Central Index, Alphabetical Series (CR 1 cards) 1921-1941, for a John Charles Marchant also known as John Charles Denley also known as Joe Marchant. The only information i have is that he was born Abt 1898 in England. He was in South Africa in 1938/39. He jumped ship (merchant Navy)and therefore used the various names. I can find no birth record of this man. He disappeared in late 1939 never to be heard of again. Any help will be appreciated with this search.
Thanks Lesley
Merchant Marine census, death etc.

My grandfather's family were all sailors. I have a great-grandfather, John Snowling, who was captain of the merchant ship Vernon. He went down with this ship when it was torpedoed in 1917. (this information from a newspaper article.) I have found his marriage index listing in 1893, but cannot find him in the 1891 or 1901 census - I assume he was at sea. (My great-grandmother is listed as "wife" in the 1901 census.) I cannot find a death index record for him in 1917 or 1918.
So, my general question is - in the census, are there records for ships at sea or in foreign ports, or are they not recorded?
Is there a death record for a seaman lost at sea (i.e. no body brought back to the UK?)
Is there a place on the web or a book that gives guidance to these and similar questions? I've just recently subscribed to Ancestry.co.uk and cannot find any substantial tutorials, help, bibliographies etc... am I missing something?
Thanks!

DAVIS, Charles Alfred

Can anyone help with a brick wall I have hit. My Grandfather, Charles Alfred Davis served in WW2 (I have a copy of his military records). I was hoping I would be able to find out more details as to how and when he arrived from Penrhiwceiber in Wales.

I have tried to trace his birth certificate, but his military records state that he did not produce his birth certificate for enlistment on 11-01-1940 into the Army. My mother was the executor of his Will and has all the papers for his marriage, etc. but no birth certificate has been found.

On his Marriage Cert. it is recorded that his father was Charles Michael Davis and mother was Jane Jones. His Military records also mention a William Davis as N.O.K. in South Wales with no know address, until he married my Grandmother.

I have searched the BDM in England, Wales and have not been able to find him, his D.O.B. on all records show 26-11-1896.

According to my mother's information he served in WW1 as a Merchant Marine, but I cannot find any records either.

Does anyone have access to any information or suggestions on how I can find out: 1. How he arrived in Australia; 2. Obtain a copy of a birth certificate; 3. Find out more about his military services as a Merchant Marine during WW1

Dianne

My uncle Mr. Julius Kert, born Sep 28, 1913 served as a British Merchant Marine during WWII. He is Estonian. He joined British Merchant Marine Service in 1939. His ship was sunk on the coast of France either in 1942 or 1943 and he was taken prisoner by Germans. My uncle is 92 years old and lives in Long Island, New York. His memory is failing, but he thinks that the name of the ship was "Dover Hill".
I'd be very very thankful if I could find more information about him or the vessel he was serving on. To my understanding he was a sailor.
Hoping for clarification and any reference to this matter.
Vaike Rannu from Toronto, Canada

I have 2 diaries that belonged to my father, and he writes of his travels around the world aboard the M.V. Silver Sandal. There is a typed 1 page list of the personnel aboard this ship. He is listed as W. Clayton Jnr. Officer. The Mater was listed as W.N. Tulloch, the Chief Officer was D. Lister. In all there were about 34 men aboard. I believe he told me that he was a member of the British Merchant Marines, and that this was the ship he was assingned to somtime in 1930, 0r 1931. I'm trying to get more information about all of this, so any help from someone who might know more, would be very helpful.

Thank You

John Clayton

I'm trying to locate information about a Harold Jackson who worked on the North Atlantic run in the 20's and 30's for the CP "Duchess" Liners. Could have moved on to other lines or within CP to the "Empress" liners. Harold was born circa 1890 (+/- 5 yrs) in N. England (Durham??) and played the piano. Don't know if the piano playing was his vocation or just a hobby. Found a "Harold" of approximately the right age lost aboard Lancastria on the commonwealth war graves site. Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Brian

SERENDIPITY: Royston William Fozzard was a sea captain for His Majesty's Merchant Marine Service, Great Britain. He made his home in Great Yarmouth, England. An old photo of this distinguished gentleman appears on pg 198 of the Jan-Feb 1990 issue of "The Genealogical Helper" magazine. It was submitted by Mr. M. Eppinger, Biloxi, MS. For other details, please reference that issue.

Hopefully, this "snippet" will provide just the right clue to a researcher.

Merchant Ships From England to USA

I am new at research outside the continental USA and got a story given to me last week and don't know how to start searching for information. Where can I find a list of Merchant Ships with the owner listed? My great grand father was supposedly adopted by a man named Alverson who owned an English Merchant Ship and after he grew up, he was given the Ship by his adopted Father Captain Alverson and he was made Captain and sailed to America, landed on the Eastern sea board and turned the ship over to the Second in command and walked onto the American shores as a Citizen! Years later his daughter was visited by an attorney from England who said she had inherited a castle and had to pay a lot of back taxes! Having no use for a Castle in England and not wanting to pay the back taxes they signed papers giving the castle to the Government of England! This story sounds far fetchted but there are circumstances that lead me to believe it might have some validity! Can someone please advise me where to start my search? Thanks!
