I've exhausted my search through the UK Census and Registry records. I have traced my husband's lines all back to 1841. They were all mariners and Royal Navy seamen. A Couple note they are R.N. pensioners. Some of them aren't on all the census records because they were out to sea. They are all from Hampshire and Cornwall. Any ideas of how to trace these sailors?

Hi

A relative has just recalled someone who was killed on teh Ark Royal.

This person would be the son of Katherine Taylor (nee Searles) in my family tree (Katherine born 1885, Plumstead)who later remarried and picked up the surname Spalding.

I cannot find any website on records of those who died on HMS Ark Royal, so that I can search for Taylor or Spalding as surnames.

Does anyone know of a direction I can head in?

Many thanks for your assistance

Medal Listing Document - Please help, I'm a bit daft!!

Hiya there

I started my family tree just 4 months ago so I'm very new to all this!

Most of my Grandad's side of the family were in the Navy/RAF and I wanted to find out about some of the medals my Grandad's father received during WW1....I went to the National Archives online to see what I could find and 3 people came up with results for Medal Listings which were documents I could buy and download from the website, which I did and I don't understand them! (Sorry to sound so dim!)

ROBERT FINCH HELLINGS is my Great Grandad who I know was the chief officer of the J J Wellington during WW1, RALPH FINCH HELLINGS is his brother who I don't know an awful lot about and what confuses me most is that DOUGLAS ROBERT HELLINGS is my Grandad's brother who was born in 1922 - so why is he on this form?

I wanted to attach the picture of the document here but it seems this forum doesn't like HTML....so I've added it to my Great Grandad's profile on my family tree.

If anyone would be kind enough to explain any of this to me I'd be so grateful :)

Thanks a lot!

Royal Marine - c1891

I'm trying to find out some information regarding my great grandfather, Robert Yarnell (b. Petworth, Sussex, 1873). On the 1891 census - aged 18 - he's listed as being a Private in the Royal Marines, living at Royal Marine Depot South Barracks in Deal. My grandmother always said that her father suffered shrapnel wounds and was subsequently invalided out of service. However, from looking at the WW1 Pension Records for 1914 recently available on Ancestry, he appears to have re-enlisted aged 41 with a reg. no. of 2222. Would be very grateful for any pointers you may be able to give me as regards searching for service records etc.

My uncle, Stoker first class Albert Ernest Bartholomew, son of Fanny & Albert Bartholomew of Shipton Bellinger Hants, was serving on HMS Pincher during WW1 when she ran aground on the rocks off the Scilly Isles, (same place as the Torrey Canyon), and sank on the 24 July 1918. He was drowned and his name is on the memorial at Southsea Common, can anyone tell me if all hands were lost, if the bodies were recovered, if so where they were buried. Thanks for any information.
Does anyone know where there were any Naval Schools running in England around 1830-1850.
My Great Great Grandfather (Joseph Ignatius Richards) was supposedly placed in one by his brothers. He did not like it so he ran away.
The frist official record I can find of him is when he married a Rebecca Smith in 1861. I have just received a copy of his death cert and it states that he was born in Birmingham, England. Also that he had been in New Zealand for 34 years and that when he died he was 74.
Any info gratefully received.

Can anyone help with a source for rating abbreviations used on Victorian RN service records? The obvious ones (B2C, B1C, Ord, AB etc) are OK but I am looking for others. At the moment CAG has me guessing! On another record it is shown as Cap AG (Captain's something?). On one the G may have a "D" superscript - possibly "Guard"?

Any suggestions welcomed.

Which Royal Navy record shows next of kin?

I have my great grandfather's certificate of service from his time in the Royal Navy (1896 - 1919) but can someone tell me if there is a record and what it is known as which holds the next of kin information...and would there be different records as I'm hoping to find out who he listed as his next of kin before he got married in 1906. I'm having trouble finding out who his parents / siblings were.

About 8 years ago a gent called Michael Bailey posted about the Empire Day Challenge Cup and Able Seaman Charles Bailey. In particular he spoke of a silver medal won by his Grandfather, Able Seaman Charles Bailey, on Empire Day 1909 as a member of the 40 man team representing HMS Pembroke, the only Navy team ever to win the Empire Day Challenge Cup.

My great-grandfather (Andrew Charles Heath) was also on that team and I have his winners medal. I have tried e-mailing Michael Bailey but his e-mail account has closed. Can anyone help me contact him or shed any further info on this medal?

Many thanks

Gary
HMS SHAMROCK

I have a series of photographs taken aboard HMS SHAMROCK, an inter-war Royal Navy Destroyer, I believe. I have no clue as to the date the photos were taken but they were taken by Edith F. Driver of Ipswich. The photos show the acceptance of a coffin aboard HMS Shamrock attended by Navy and Government officials and dignitaries and accompanied by a man in French military uniform. Given the timeframe of the Shamrock I'm wondering whether this points to the period around 1922 when French and British warships were monitoring the events at Smyrna (Izmir) in Turkey. There are certainly some photos in the collection showing "Doomed Smyrna" and one dated 1922. A possible red-herring in all this is a name on a modern letter accompanying the photos addressed to a T.R. Baker of Crawley, Sussex. He may have been married an Amy Smith. He may have been attached to the Essex Regiment (British Army) but his father may have served aboard HMS Shamrock which was scrapped in 1936. Lots of "mays" sorry! I'd like to trace any interested decendents but also any information from those who served aboard the Shamrock, indeed from any interested parties who could help add to the information I have. I could post digital copies of some of the photos via e-mail to anyone who is serious in helping to discover more about what they represent.

RN service number ca 1890

I've just found a third generation of mariners in our lineage ... this third one with the Royal Navy.
I'll doubtlessly have further questions and requests as I try to flesh-out his career. Some of the early info is readily available in a photo-album, personal logbook (complete with pinup girl pictures pasted into the back pages) that he kept from 1891 (17 years of age) to 1898. This book contains brief handwritten records of his ships and voyages etc.
My service number query relates to a portrait photo that accompanied the book. The photo looks to me to be of a young officer (age 26), with sword, although i can't yet work out his rank from it. On the back is written his name and a note indicating the photo was taken 1900 just before he sailed to Australia to join HMS Dart. There is also a six digit numeral on the back of the photo.

My current query is: Is this six-digit number likely to be his service number? Is that likely to help me find further information about him?

I have him as "Frank" Seymour in census sheets and the photograph has "F M Seymour" ... but I haven't yet found out whether he enlisted as Frank or Francis or some other.

Cheers
Dougal
p.s. We have other old family material relating to one F B P Seymour RN (somewhat less obscure) but it doesn't appear that this F M Seymour is direct lineage from FBP.

I am trying to trace a Joseph IRELAND b.1821 in Silverton, Devon. On the 1841 Census he is listed at East Stonehouse Royal Marine Barracks, Plymouth. On the 1851 Census he is living with his parents Joseph b.1780 and Hannah b.1782 in Silverton. His occupation is listed as Greenwich Pensioner/Labourer. The 1861 census shows Joseph is then married to Caroline b.1833 and they have 3 daughters and 1 son. His occupation again is listed as Greenwich Pensioner/Labourer. I can follow him right up to his death in 1882 but its the early years I am having trouble with. I do not know how to find his regiment, dates of enlistment/discharge or anything else relating to him. Any advice would be gratefully received. Mary

I have downloaded the navy record for my ancestor James Rees May but it is incomplete. It shows he joined the navy for 10 years in 1867 as a carpenter. It records only one ship from 1/1/1873 to 14/2/1873 then, in the discharged column says "list 17 no 7 for Asia promoted to act. carp 2 C". After this are the words "traced for 7.5.07" (or at least that's what it looks like).
I know he served until 1903 when he retired as a lieutenant - this information from the London Gazette. Any ideas on where I might find the rest of his record?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Advice re Royal Naval Records please

My daughter via Ancestry.com has found discharge papers for my grandfather in 1917 where he appears to have been serving with the 5th Kings Liverpool Regiment but it states that he had started with his medical condition in 1906 when he served with the Royal Navy - Navy and East coast Camp Northampton and says he had 6 years in the Navy; I can't find a rank and also the writing is quite difficult to read. I only ever heard talk of my grandfather being in "The Home Guard" which I assume is like "Dad's Army" In 1915 he was 30 years of age and if it's true he had served in the Navy for 6 years then would he have volunteered? Could it be he was in the Navy for 6 years and due to his condition which was "recurrent rheumatism" was transferred to the 5th KLR? After the name of the regiment the letters N.R.G appear or could be N.R.S. - what would they stand for? The problem is that the writing is so bad in places that I can't read it which makes it difficult to understand.

I doubt that I could trace his Naval records with so little info could I but have a feeling that he may never have "sailed the seas" and perhaps just had a desk job with the Royal Navy.

Would appreciate any advice to find further information on William Singleton from Liverpool.

Brettenny in the Navy, mid-nineteenth century

My husband's great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Brettenny died in Cape Town, South Afica in Dec. 1881 at the age of 68 (or 63). He was born in England but I have no idea where or who his parents were. He was a seaman (a Boatswain) when he lived in South Africa, later becoming an Officer, Central Wharf in Cape Town. His son was born in Cape Town in 1853 so he must have arrived there some time before this. I believe it is possible that he went to SA as a seaman and was wondering how I could go about finding any naval records for him. I have searched on the National Archives site under various spellings of his name but have found nothing. Is is possible that there still might be something there for him? I would be grateful for any advice.

Name: Roy Browne Dando (Browne = middle name)
Born: 5th May 1919, Hereford, Herefordshire, UK
Died: November 1987, Rlymouth, Devon, UK - Aged: 68

hi,

having lost major members of my close family, im looking into putting my family history together.

Im searching for my grandad's naval records. Ive discovered through birth records that his name was Roy Browne Dando (Browne being his registered middle name). I was surprised at this because my mum always told me that his surname was double barrelled.

I know that he joined the Royal Navy in WWII (1940's) and left as an officer (date unknown - possible late 1950's). I know that he left my nan (Florence Minnie Dando) and their three children and got divorced in 1950's. He then moved down to Plymouth and married another woman called Phylis. Obviously due to the subject of Roy leaving, he was very much a "no go" area to talk about.

Just before he died, he did meet up with my mum and that was the first and last time I ever met him (vague memory as i was very young). All i remember of him was ginger hair! He died soon after visiting.

His naval records were complete and handed down to my mum, but in her anger of the family history at the time, she ripped up and threw all the documents out.

I really would like to know more about him, service records etc etc. Mainly to preserve something for future generations and to know "who i am".

If anyone can help me.... please feel free to msg!! :)

Many thanks

Zena

Hello everyone

Need some help please; Last year, online, I found the record of 1 of my grandfathers - handwritten - (served till 1937) - i.e. a copy of his service number (top right) then,a description of him (height, weight, eye colour etc) and, a listing of ships he had been on. I dont remember if it was a subscription/PAUG or? but, my link to it (I did save it honest!) has gone. Does anyone know where it's gone?

Many thanks for reading

Ell

Irish surgeon in British Navy, c.1800

Hi,

I have come across a biography of one of my ancestor's brothers, which says that their mother's father was a 'surgeon in the British Navy'. This is all that I know about him, other than that his name was Edward Minchin and that he died (according to his gravstone), 5 May 1826. He would probably have been born around 1760 in County Tipperary, Ireland and his wife was called Elizabeth nee Hunt.

Where would I go to find out about his navy career and if the information in the biography is accurate?

T

Any ideas where to look - I'm not based in the UK so would have to rely on the internet

Gary

The first record of John MURCH serving in the Royal Navy is in 1793. He is listed as an ABLE Seaman rather than an ordinary seaman. His hometown was in Dartmoor (Ashburton, Devon). After a few years of ABLE he became part of a Sailmaker's Crew and then a Sailmaker. Any ideas how he would be assessed as ABLE if I can't find any record of previous Royal Navy service. Thanks Tania

Hi all...can ANYONE please offer any suggestions.

My G-Grandfather was born in Cork, Ireland in 1869. I know he joined the Navy in c1885, possibly lied about his age to get in. He served in the navy until about 1914, exact date not known.

He married Annie May Halliday in Dec 1916, and then lived in Bristol until his death in 1957. His occupation at the time of his marriage was 'Train Car Cleaner'.

Annie May was his second wife, we have no idea who his first wife was.

Now you know as little as we do. I would very much like to find out about his Navy career but have absolutely no idea how to find anything.

I have tried the navy site but gave up after a couple of hours getting totally lost. I have also written to the offices holding the naval records but they want the information I am trying to find, i.e. service number, where and when stationed and aboard what ship, and occupation in services, to give me any information. Plus I understand it is VERY expensive getting info from Kew.

PLEASE what can you suggest....I am pulling my hair out now, well what is left!!

Paul

My Gr. Grandfather's naval records read that he served from 3 June 1873 to 8 March 1876
Under Character it says "1921/12/73 Exempy"
Under Discharge it reads "D.D. Malta Hospital Enteris fever"
Under Remarks it reads "per N(?) Certe Invalided 30/1/76"

Can anyone explain this better for me. I certainly would appreciate it. My guess is that Certe is a short for of Certificate - The "N" I'm not sure of but it is not a "D"

I was always told that he died at sea and is buried at sea - could this be correct? If he died in the hospital would his body have been buried at sea?

Thanks
Hello This is probably a long shot but my great grandfather Michael Monaghan b 1803 Ireland served in the British Navy for 21 years.Looking for any confirmation of this fact. He married an Elizabeth Brown. He was in Ontario in 1851-1873 in Grey Co.and served as the Reeve of Osprey Twp.I don't know where born in Ireland or when married so hope to learn something from his Navy record.
Thanks for any help on where to look.
Mary in Canada

Hi
I am new to this list having just discovered an ancestor serving as a Royal Marine private onboard HMS Indus (pretty sure it deciphers as that, the only other possibility being India but she scrapped in 1856) in 1862. Have not yet found out much about the INDUS. Can anybody out there point me in the right direction please??
Many thanks.

I'm very new to this so don't know where to start. My family has always talked about William Welbury who "was drafted to serve in the battle of Trafalgar", however I can't find him on the online lists. This could just be a family legend but is there a chance he was there, but is just harder to find?

Thomas Mannings, at Trafalgar?

Joseph Almond 1777-1863, married Catherine Garret (c1794-1863) eldest d/o William Garret (c1748-1844) and Ellen Caldwell (1770-1862), at New Carlisle, QC, Canada, c1813. William Garret had served in the 29th Regiment, Royal Army, during the colonial insurrection at Boston, MA. Almond claimed to have fought at Trafalgar as "Thomas Mannings", it seems most unclear why he had the alias. He could have been born in Scotland, he died at Shigawake, QC.

Is it possible to determine whether this man was present at the battle of Trafalgar?

John Watt, Lieutenant on half-pay pension 1818

My ancestor received his commission in 1818 but was not appointed to a vessel. I understand that the RN was training a big surplus of oficers around this time and that those without appointments were retained on half-pay.

My question is - would his widow have received a pension after he died? And if so, would the records be in the same books as the half-pay registers?

If so, by working backwards from her death in 1846 I'm hoping to be able to determine when John died and obtain a death certificate with some personal details on it. (John Watt is such a common name that it's very hard to know which one might be him.)

The only records of him that I could find at Kew were in the Navy List and the half-pay registers, probably because he didn't have any service record. I'm in Australia so going to the Kew Archives is a pretty rare event.

Many thanks
Di

I'm trying to piece together the possible life of my ancestor, and wonder if the following "life history" is credible:

1805 - Serves in HMS Belleisle at Trafalgar (Rate/Ranking: Private, Marine)
1806/24 - 6 children baptised at Norwich, Norfolk (no marriage found, but very likely before 1800)
1827/? - Proprieter of greengrocers/fruiters/confectioners in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
1841 (census) - In the infirmary of the Royal Hospital, Greenwich (listed as "Surgery Mate")
1847 - Died at Greenwich

My main question is ... would someone who was possibly injured at Trafalgar go on to have an occupation outside the navy, but then be taken in in later life by the RH at Greenwich?

(There is one other nautical "connection" - my ancestor's daughter-in-law's father was also a seaman.)

Any opinions on the above would be most welcome.
The Life of a Royal Marine around the time of Trafalgar

I think that one of my direct ancestors may have been a Royal Marine at Trafalgar (a person of his - fairly uncommon - name turns up on the Trafalgar Roll, and at the age of 60 - on the 1841 census - my ancestor is resident in the Royal Hospital at Greenwich).

Before making a special trip to TNA, I would like to have some idea of the feasibility of this scenario.

My ancestor married in Suffolk in September 1804. Their first child was born in Suffolk in May of the following year (so the bride was probably pregnant at the time of the wedding).

Their second child was born in Norfolk in June 1806 - so (theoretically!) husband and wife would have been "together" around September 1805. Subsequent children arrived at approx. 2 or 3 year intervals.

Bearing in mind that Trafalgar took place in October 1805, would a marine have been entitled to regular "shore leave" during this time, or would he have been away from home for several years at a time?

If anyone could throw any light on the life of a marine around this time, then I would be very grateful!

Many thanks.

Penny

A while ago I managed to find a list on the internet that someone had made of all the promotions within the Royal Navy during the 19th century. I found a reference to my 3xgreat grandfather George Palmer born c1821 in Bridgwater, It had the dates of his promotion to Lieutenant on 3 May 1853 and to Captain on 4 Apr 1870. I stupidly didn't make a note at the time of the address. Am trying to find the list again, but to no avail - does anyone know where I can find it again?

Gary

Officer's naval service record at Kew

Hi everyone,

I'm after some advice on getting a service record for an officer in the Royal Navy from the National Archives.

I have downloaded his service record for the time up to when he became an officer but now wish to get his officer's record. I'm in Australia and it will cost about 45 pounds for the archives to research and send out the record, but I have a cousin who has said he will go to Kew for me and I need to give him some instructions as to what to do when he gets there. He has never been to Kew before nor done any family history so I would like to give him clear instructions if I can.

Did they keep the same service number when they became officers? The man in question joined the Navy in 1889 as a Boy and in 1896 there is a note at the bottom of the record that says "NP1387/96 Promoted to Act Gunner from 15.6.96" In the Discharged column it says "Officer's Section". Does anybody know what information I will need to give my cousin in order for him to be able to go to Kew and get a copy of the record? I've read the research guides but to be honest, I think I'm more confused now than I was before! I understand there is a Navy List in the microfilm reading room or something?

Sorry to be a nuisance. Any pointers will be gratefully received.

Also, a little off this topic, the man I am looking for is named Malcolm McKenzie. Family stories say he invented some form of Gun mounting bracket or something that enabled the gunners sight to stay constant on the target instead of moving around? If anyone knows of this device or a website where I may find something about it, I would be grateful. I've googled "gun sight" and a few other variations but have come up with blanks.

Alison

Charles McCarthy is listed as a Sergeant, Royal Marines L. on his daughters wedding certificate in 1870. The 1871 census gives her place of birth as Canada, about 1835. Did Marines travel with wives? Were there marines in Canada around 1835?
His other daughter, Catherine, was born Woolwich c.1840. I've been unable to find Charles McCarthy at Kew despite employing a professional, nor have I found the birth of Catherine in Woolwich. Any suggestions?
Alastair Donald

I was looking at a passenger list for one of my ancestors, John Harris (Harries), his wife Mary Gilmore, and one of their son's William Harris. They arrived at the New Orleans port in March of 1854. On the passenger list, it stated that he was a sawyer and also listed a "Greenwich Pensioner". What does a Greenwich Pensioner mean? I have looked for information about it and the only thing that I can find is that it is possible that John Harris was some how associated with the Royal Navy. This seems to be consistent with the rumor that John Harris in the military and met his future bride, Mary Gilmore in a hospital in Ireland where she was working as a nurse. There is another family myth that he was a excellent swordsman, but I don't know much about that either. Any ideas? I try to learn as much as I can about my ancestors because it just seems to bring them to life for me.

I am curious. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Jennifer

Tom Percy Hemming, b. 1872

My grandfather, Tom Percy Hemming, was born in Worcester in 1872. According to family legend, his parents died when he was young (dad when he was 2) and his older siblings "purchased a commission" for him in the Royal Navy, but either he rejected it or washed out, so they bought him a one way ticket to Canada. He emigrated there (with a trunk containing his clothes and a gun), worked on the railroad, married my grandmother in Manitoba, and the rest is history. If he was about 15 when he went to Canada, he would have been introduced to the Navy somewhere between 1882 and 1887. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I could track this family legend down, given that I live on the upper left coast of the USA and a visit to England is not in the cards in the foreseeable future. All assistance gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Looking for anyone with information on HMS Boadicea, posted to the Africa station 1878-82, and particularly the involvement of the Naval Brigade in the Zulu and Boer Wars. Boadicea's crew believed to have been involved in the battle of Gingindhlovu, the relief of Eshowe and later the battle of Majuba. Would love to hear from any descendants of crew or of Naval Brigade men, particularly George Hammond and Samuel John Witheridge, both PO 1st Class and Quartermasters on Boadicea, who died side by side at Majuba in 1881.

RN ratings service records

I have obtained a copy of a service record covering the period 1901 - 1919 from the National Archives (ADM 188). The seaman's service fills the whole page, and there is no indication that he was discharged in 1919. In fact, there are some references to post 1919 service at the bottom of the page. Is there another page somewhere showing the rest of his service? There is a reference at the bottom of the list of ships he served on to "See Folio 19 at end". At the top under the seaman's name someone has written "PIC" then a 6 digit number. Any idea what this is?

Henry may have been in the Navy as his occupation but the census is hard to read. My George Else grew up to be a ship's carpenter so...
Any information on any of the three in this house would be great. Thanks

Hi again...I have discovered that my very illusive G-Grandfather who served in the navy may have served on a ship called HMS Royal Oak.

The only HMS Royal Oak in service during his time c1885 - 1916, was the Royal Sovereign class battleship. This fits in quite well because his daughter, who is still very much alive, remembers that he had an accident in a sea-plane which was the cause of him leaving the service with a dissability pension. HMS Royal Oak was part of the 'Special Flying Squadron'

Now, I have tried to find a crew list for this ship on the National Archives site but aparantly the ship didn't exist. Where else might I find such a crew list. ??

Thanks for any info you might be able to provide.

Paul
