The artists rendering does confirm one thing, the headgear is a civil war "Forage Cap" issued between 1832-1858.

The design of the cap remains the same, but by 1858, the soft cotton that caused the cap to collapse, was replaced with wool and stays on the inside in order to make the cap stand up to fatigue.

The "forage cap" was issued to all enlisted men, ensignia would be added later to determine whether the soldier was Calvary, infantry, etc.

The drawing is very cool!
