This is my grt grt grandfather George PAYNE b 1848 Nth Waltham, Southampton.

He was known as Captain Payne, I believe he was in the army but have no proof of this - there are many G Payne's in the army lists. I know he travelled to Sth Africa at one stage - Boer War probably?

Can anyone identify his uniform as being an army one, mounted troops?

George was listed as a Lieutenant HM Army 1901 (dau wedding cert) & again in 1902 (son's wedding cert).
Previous to 1892 his occupation was baker/grocer/provision merchant.

So was he perhaps a captain/lieutenant in the Boer War??

I hope this photo goes thru' okay, my own copy is not very clear to start with!

Appreciate any comments from anyone who can perhaps help. I have been trying on the internet to identify the uniform but the cap has me baffled!
