The lighter color (possibly gray) uniform, zig zag trim on the coat front and the colored cuffs and collar points toward a state militia unit. Most militia companies had a distinctive uniform, as there was really no central authority until they were combined to form regiments in Federal service during the civil war. The french influence in the uniform is correct, the chasseurs style uniform and kepi was extremely popular. Gray was a popular militia color in Vermont. I would try to determine where in Vermont your family members lived, and then researching the militia companies in that area. The Vermont Historical Society might be able to assist also-
