4th Air Depot Group, 5th Air Force

My dad, James S. Benefield, served in the 4th Air Depot Group of the 5th Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater. He was transported on the USS President Johnson troop ship to Townsville, Australia, after a long voyage of about 37 days. He went to Finschaven, New Guinea, Lae, and Leyte. Because of his gunnery and radio education, the 5th AF would "borrow" him on bombing missions. On one occasion (I have no date, but think it was 1944), the plane went down on the beach at Leyte. My dad was wounded and lost a finger and when he came to he was on a jeep being taken to the medics.

I really need some more details about his service and would love to find out about that plane crash - he never knew if there were any survivors. I'm trying to find someone who might have known my dad and/or someone who is doing research on the 5th AF. Thanks for any help,

Melissa

Jack Douglas Dawe is my cousin. He retired from the Air Force from the Air Base in Klamath Falls Oregon, I believe in the early 1970's. He has since moved to Baja California around the LaPaz-Cabo San Lucas Area. I believe he receives a retirement check from the Air force as he had been in the service for well over 20 years. How would I go about finding where they send the check. We have tried calling the telephone numbers we had for him in La Paz only to be told those numbers no longer exist. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am trying to find William Reed Allen. Born November 28, 1941 to Reuben Floyd Allen and Harriot Lou Day in Roxboro, NC. He would have been in the US Air Force stationed at Dow air force base in Bangor, Maine in 1963-64. He was airman of the quarter at one point during the time he was stationed at Dow AFB. I know he lived on route 3 in Roxboro on a family farm but can't be sure when he left there. That is not an official address as it seems it is just a country road not known to people outside of the Roxboro area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Todd Ryan

Hello! I am looking for anyone that has information about or served in the 41st Air (or Repair) Depot Squadron. My grandfather, Vernon Randolph King, served in this squadron during WWII. I have a few pictures from his time in Italy. He mentioned being stationed in Gioia del Colle, Italy. Apparently, he was also stationed in North Africa. He was a mechanic on planes, my father believes he worked on bombers. We are not sure if he worked on other types of planes such as fighters. Any information that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. I am sending for his records from St. Louis.

Hello,
I am trying to connect with someone who may have served with my Dad. I lost him in April and am working on a memorial for him. Hamilton King Avery II, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF, Retired. He graduated from West Point Military Academy 1941. He trained as a pilot in B-24's and A-26's and flew in Egypt, Libya, Romania, Naples and Normandy. He served in the 98th Bomb Group/Pyramidiers. On 1 Aug 1943, led by Col. John Kane, they took off to bomb the Ploesti Oil Fields. I have some great pictures of his crew and hope some of them are still living. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Air Force Intelligence Ottawa, Canada. Then was transferred to the Far Eastern Air Forces, Tokyo, Japan in 1953 during the Korean War. In 1957 he was reassigned to the Pentagon, Washington, DC, Intelligence Department where he served until he retired in 1961. Could anyone help?
Thank you for any information.

Chambers (co-pilot) of Altoona, Pennsylvania, 1st Lt. Irwin G. Zaetz (navigator) of Burlington, Vermont, 1st Lt. Robert E. Oxford (bombardier) of Concord, Georgia, S/Sgt. Charles D. Ginn (engineer) of Crete, Illinois, S/Sgt. Harry B. Queen (radio operator) of Onset, Massachusetts, Sgt. James A. Hinson (gunner) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Sgt. Alfred H. Gerrans, Jr. (gunner) of Kinston, North Caroina. The remains of the crew were never recovered.

Within the past year, a private American researcher discovered the wreckage of this aircraft in a remote part of northeast India. My family is trying to notify next of kin of this news. Any relatives located could also contribute DNA samples to assist in the identification of any remains recovered.

I'm a nephew of 1st Lt. Zaetz. Any information on any surviving relatives of any of the other crew members, such as crew member obituaries, would be greatly appreciated.

Lt. Jack Meier(s) b. Cincinnati 1922 was my mother's third cousin. I seek any information about him. At this point I know only that he was in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was MIA on a mission over Italy in 1944. His immediate family is deceased. I hope someone out there remembers Jack who lost his life at such a young age.

I found this photo in the garbage with some other items that were traced to Alfred Elliot Uhler and his son, Jack E. Uhler, both from York PA. Alfred graduated high school in 1918 so I'd imagine it'd be his son in this WWII photo.
Found with this photo, There was also a book, "non-commissioned officers' manual" dated 1917, with the following inscription; Corp Robert Huson Co. D 7th Br. Inf Repl Camp Camp Lee Va. again this book seems to date from the first world war while the photo is clearly the second world war era, but I just thought it best to include all the clues I have.

I'm posting this scan to see if anyone can identify any of the people in this photo. I donated The original photo to The York County Heritage Trust library & archives in York PA.
If anyone is interested in a higher quality scan of this photo, I have a very high quality copy in .tiff format that I will hapily share with a researcher or family member of someone in the photo.
Thanks!

Col. George T. LEE, WWII US Army Air Force 79th FG 87th squadron & 86th FG 525th, 526th, & 527th squadrons

George T. Lee, 4th son of Mary J. Tierney and Thomas M. Lee, was a Colonel in the USAF during WWII. There following information comes from several sources. While it seems like an abundance of information, it is incomplete. Any additional information is welcome.

------
January 21, 1945 - Order of battle of the 12th US Air Force in Europe
86th Fighter Group. P-47 Thunderbolt.
Ciampino, Italy. Colonel George T. Lee.
525th, 526th and 527th Fighter Squadrons.
--------
http://www.eagle-editions.com/86thFG.htm
I spoke with the publisher for this book. It is touted as the complete story of the 86th Fighter-Bomber Group, 12th Air Force. The book hadn't been indexed yet, but she found a picture of Col. George T. Lee. The caption highlights his record breaking age and # of missions.
--------
The following links are for two articles that mention many of the Lee family members as well as information about a documentary that is in the process of being made in Norwood, MA.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2005/04/03/wwii_ac...

http://www.willcoxrangenews.com/articles/2007/01/16/news/fea...

---------
This following excerpt is from a family tree on Ancestry.

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?pid=-1980781487&amp...

ID: I0240
Name: George T LEE
Sex: M
Birth: 1919
Death: 5 OCT 1954 in Gerald, Missouri, approaching Scott Airforce Base, near Belleville, Illinois
Military Service: WWII - Air Force
Residence: 26 Rock St, Norwood, MA
Burial: 11 OCT 1954 Highland Cemetery, Norwood, MA
Note:
Colonel George T. He and his squadron spent many hours chasing Rommel's forces out of there.

Promoted to Captain - January, 1944

July 1943 - met General Montgomery

Distinguished Flying Cross - Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters.

At the age of 25, Lee was the record holder in the European and Mediterrainean Theaters, having flown a record of 258 command missions in his P47 Thunderbolt Fighter-bommer from bases in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Corsica, France and Germany.

War correspondents dubbed his squadron "Lee's Lieutenants"

AWARD: British Distinguished Flying Cross with Citation which had been approved by His Majesty King George VII of England.
AWARD: Croix de Guerre with Palm, bestowed upon him by the Provisional Government of France (similar to the US Congressional Medal of Honor)

1949 - Deputy wing Commander of the 86th Fighter Wing, Neublberg, Germany

May 18, 1944 - Homecoming parade in Norwood MA - thirty day rest.

US Airmen Shot Down Over New Guinea in WWII Identified

Updated: 4/10/2007

WASHINGTON

The remains of 10 U.S. airmen, missing in action since a World War II mission over New Guinea, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial, the Pentagon said Monday.

A B-24 Liberator with the airmen was returning to the aerodrome at Nadzab, New Guinea, after bombing enemy targets near Hollandia on April 16, 1944. The aircraft altered course because of bad weather and was flying to the aerodrome at Saidor when it disappeared, the Defense Department said in a statement.

Wreckage of a World War II-era bomber was found in Morobe Province in New Guinea in 2001, according to the Defense Department's Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office. A team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command surveyed the site in 2002 and recovered remains as well as identification tags and other objects.

Scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used dental records, mitochondrial DNA and other tools to identify the remains.

Army officials have met with the airmen's next-of-kin to discuss the recovery and identification process and to coordinate burial with military honors, the Pentagon said.

The airmen were identified as:

—2nd Lt. Raymond A. Cooley, of Leary, Texas.

—2nd Lt. Dudley R. Ives, of Ingleside, Texas.

—2nd Lt. George E. Archer, of Cushing, Okla.

—2nd Lt. Donald F. Grady, of Harrisburg, Pa.

—Tech. Sgt. Richard R. He is listed in the 1954 Lakeland, Polk County Florida telephone directory as being in the Air Force. From the one picture we have of him his stripes show him to be a captain.
Rumor has it he was killed in the Korean War but we cannot confirm this. He is not listed among the MIA or KIA. Maybe he just did not come back home to her.
Charles and Bonita had one son, Donald Thomas Hylander. Any help is greatly appreciated.

When I mentioned that the picture you have may have my father in the caption, I could have been wrong. I also had two uncles in the military, Edward and Georges Serabian. One was a warrant officer (?), and the other I believe was in the Army Air Corp. If I saw the picture, I would be able to tell. Thanks! MaryAnn S. Wyatt

I am interested in anyone researching the 401st bomb group. My father, 2nd Lt. Thurman M. Geren was Pilot of the 613th Squadron. He flew 16 missions during war and over 100 missions in the Berlin Air Lift. He left behind many original documents. Much of his info on missions and crew is wrong on the 401st web site. Trying to document the truth. Have the "History of the 401st" that was printed in 1949 as well; as a list of members of that group and their civilian address. Will share everything in effort to right things.

He learned to fly at that time and I have a picture of him taken in, I believe, 1947 and wearing a uniform - on the back of the photograph is stamped "ROTC". I will email a scan of the photograph to someone if they think they can identify the uniform.

Thanks, Phil (England)

I am trying to locate Thomas Gerard Severini. The last information I had, he was active-duty Air Force and possibly on his way to a base in England. He was at Aviano Air Base, Italy during the mid-to-late 1990's and relocated to a base in Florida upon returning stateside. The best info I has is that somewhere between 1998-2002ish, he may have been headed to England. According to the DOD personnell website, he's still active-duty AF. If anyone knows how to contact him, I'd appreciate it if you'd let him know Terra is trying to find him. My phone number is 910-964-0841, or 910-864-3068 x1300 (work.) Thank you.

I have my dad's discharge paper from the Air Force and I'm trying to figure out what divisions he would have served in?

I have my dad's discharge paper from the Air Force and I'm trying to figure out what divisions he would have served in. I would like to locate people he may have served with. In the box where listed Most Significant Duty Assignment, it states he was in the 34th Air Div (Def). I've tried to search for this division and have had no luck so far. Would this have been the only division he served with? Would the discharge have listed others? He served from July 24, 1950-September 8, 1953.
Thanks for your help.
Sue

John C. Kimler of Carnduff, Saskatchewan and was a reconnaissance pilot under the 9th Air Force in the U.S.A.A.F.

I am trying to research my grandfather's history in WWII. I have some information, but not a lot. My grandfather was John C. Kimler of Carnduff, Saskatchewan and was a reconnaissance pilot under the 9th Air Force in the U.S.A.A.F. Although he is Canadian, he had duel citizenship since his father was American. He survived the war but never spoke of his experiences to anyone. I would be happy for any info, including who he flew with, if any of these men are still alive, etc. He was a second lieutenant by the time the war ended. Thank you.

I'm trying to get some more info on my Dad from WWII. The whole thing has turned rather strange....I have his Honorable Discharge papers from the army (AAF) in 1946, and they list his 'organization' as the 12th radio security section. I cannot find any info about this.

It lists 4 'decorations and citations': WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. But in his collection there are a total of 10; the 4 above PLUS (I was able to identify these on the net) European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 add'l campign stars , Army of Occupation WWII, Presidential Unit Citation (Army), Phillipine Liberation Medal, Air Medal with 2 add'l campign leaves, and Distinguished Flying Cross. Also, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal has 3 add'l campign stars. Shouldn't these other awards be listed on his paperwork? Or somewhere?!

He had 3 patches, 1 is 'communications specialist', 1 is 4th Air Force, and the other is 8th Air Force. I have early pictures (I'm guessing 1944) of him wearing the 4th AF patch, but is it possible that he was then assigned to the 8th?

It also lists 5 'battles and campaigns': China Defense, India Burma, G0 33 WD 45, Anti submarine, and G0 40 WD 45.

I also have a paper that lists my dad and 7 others being promoted to Staff Sergeant and Sergeant, and an accompanying photo. The header on that on is 18th Radio Security Section in CA.

The whole thing has become very confusing....I have run out of searches and would appreciate any help or info anyone could give!!

PS. He also served in the Air Force from March '51 to Nov. '52. I am told that he was called back to train troops. He was stationed at Selfridge Air Base in MI.

My direct email is gwhunter@speakeasy.org

We believe that he might have been married. He was my Mother Nora's Brother (or half Brother - we are not sure). My Mother Nora died in 1969. At the time I was only two years old, that is why we have very little info. on David. David is listed in the newspaper article as Nora's Brother, it also states that he's living in Germany in 1969. If you have ANY info. on David at all, would you please contact me. Thank you! I do not know if David is still alive today or not.

I have very little information on him other than he received a medical discharge. There was family problems and my father was worried about his children being taken away . Please, if anyone can help me to find out more about my father and how to get information. I sure would appreciate the help. I wrote one letter and had forms sent back for me to fill out. The bad thing about that is I have very little information about him other than an article that was placed in a Lansing new paper, asking for help in looking for a house so he could keep his family together. If anyone can help or direct me in the right direction it sure would help. B. Stedry

US Naval Air Station, North Island, San Diego, CA --cir 1940's

I'm wondering if someone can help me. I know it is not exactly Air Force but the Naval Air in the 1940's
I have a piece of a page of a North Islander, Naval air station, San Diego, California
the most that I can read is " North Islander, Naval air station, San Diego, California Volume one, Number eigh__, May 194_" (it is NOT the ANNUAL)
there is a photo on the front , the top half of which is a bunch of sailors apparently climbing over one of a set of wooden walls.
could someone tell me what year this was?

apparently my great Grand mother was only interested in the people in the "library" picture on the page 2 of this one..

So can I find a full page copy somewhere of page two, that might list what the photo was about or who was in it?

I've tried contacting the Naval Media Center that currently does the navy's magazine and they sent me to The Navy Historical Center who sent me to regional branch of the National Archives Laguna Niquel, CA, who they claim will have copies of the newspaper,(wich will mean LOTS of digging to find it) and the San Diego Historical Society Research Library ,but I am unable to find a way to contact them.
the San Diego library only has a copy of 1953
thank you for your time and assistance...

Carolyn Gathright - Hazelton

Carl Hale USAF

In 1920, Carl Hale was serving at Kelly Field in Texas. He was listed as an officer. I do not know if he was in WW1. Carl was based in Hawaii about 1930-1936. He also served at a base in San Diego. In 1968, he passed away. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA. He may have served in WW2. Can someone tell me any more about him? What was his rank? Was he a pilot? What did he do while in the Air Force? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks brian in springfield mo.
