You can order Civil War compiled military service records and pension records online here: https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/start.swe?SWECmd=.... It’s much more convenient and a lot faster, too. (It used to take me three to four months to get service records - now it takes about a month).

If you decide to order Jesse’s pension records from the National Archives, this may help:

Jesse M. Purcell of Co. B 6th Cav, IN filed for a pension in Indiana Nov 19, 1888 (application number 679162 certificate number 456478). Pension transferred to his widow Irene Purcell in Indiana 28 Jul 1924 (application number 1222107 certificate 953512).
