A spring at Andersonville

As published in "Leaves of Gold," 1963 printing (edited by Clyde Francis Lytle), p. 154:

"FAITH -- During the Civil War fourteen inmates of Andersonville Prison, on August 20, 1864, bowed in prayer to the Almighty that he would send them water; and a spring broke out on the outside of the wall and ran through the prison. The people there were unanimous in their belief that it was of divine origin, the water in the nearby stream being fearfully unwholesome. The spring is reported to be still flowing. -- 'Christian Endeavor World'."

Almanzo B Stancliff - great-great uncle died in Andersonville

I have a great great uncle who died in Andersonville Prison at the age of 20 yrs. His name was Almanzo B Stancliff. I have seen a picture of his stone in Andersonville, but there is also a stone in the cemetary (here in New York)next to his grandfather. Is it possible that they brought him home? Is there any way to find out?
If there is more info on him, I would be grateful to know it. Thank You, Pat Barber

Andersonville and Oliver Harwood

My ancestor,Oliver Harwood was with the 5th Wisconsin Infintry,Co. I ,and was captured at the Wilderness and was taken to Andersonville and then to Florence,S.C. The story I have tells about the heroic events which took place at these sites in which he kept himself and two other fellow soldiers alive by making shoes for the Rebels and also getting extra food brought into the prison from outside the walls.Makes for a very good story as to what these men endured during the time at these places. If anyone has a name that I could contact, it would be very much appreciated, that is of the 5th. There is more to this as I also have another ancestor who is buried at Andersonville, and I am, in the near future, going to start a campaign to have his remains sent home to a heroes welcome.More to follow as this story unfolds.

I Remain,
Your Servant,
B.
Ichabod Dodson, doctor in Andersonville Prison

My gggrandfather, Ichabod Dodson, was a doctor in Andersonville Prison. The Shelby Co. Ill 1860 census shows
him as a farmer. In 1870 it shows him as a Physician.
My ggrandmother told me her grandfather, Ichabod Dodson, was a doctor in Andersonville Prison. They were confederate
and didn't talk much about it.

I can not find any information about him. Perhaps you can locate something.

Thanks, Sheryl

Benjamin Burdick, Company D, 149th Infantry, NY

Hi Kevin

This is great. Wonder if you can find a record for Benjamin Burdick, Company D, 149th Infantry, NY. His tombstone says he died at Andersonville Prison. Family history says he died at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA.

I just recently discovered he was wounded and presumably captured 15 May 1864 at Resaca, GA so his being in Andersonville makes sense. Since another record says he is buried in Alexandria, VA perhaps he'd been moved to Libby at some point.

Appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

FREE RESEARCH AT ANDERSONVILLE

Hi all, Although this is mpt my board, I want to welcome all of those intrested in Andersonville. I am a part time historian at the site and a volunteer for the National Park Service. I do lookups FREE for the asking. I think you will find a great deal of intresting information in this board and might even find researchers looking for the same names. Hang in there,,, and it can happen. There were an estimated 45000 POWS held here and with 5 or 6 generations,, well, thats a lot of descendants.I also have the largest website on the net on Andersonville which should answer most questions you might have, but if you cant find the answer to what your looking for, please feel free to drop me a note.

Kevin Frye
http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/index.html
