Many of these men ended up in veterans' homes. The names of some of these 'inmates' were published in 1886 in the Report of the President and Other Officers of the Veteran's Home Association of California; for the years 1884, 1885, and 1886; Sacramento: P. L. Shoaff, Supt. State Printing; 1887

This home was in Yountville, Napa Co. CA and the men were from almost every state in the nation. The majority are from California. Most do not show up in the 1900 census.

(This publication and many others for Civil War era records in CA are available from the Pomona Valley Genealogical Society at http://home.earthlink.net/~hazefam/PVGS.html )
