I'm looking for any info on my ancestors who "supposedly" served in the CIvil War...I've gotten a few hints that they might have served with J. H. Morgan during his raids but I am trying to confirm this...their names are Jesse Butler (1830-1879), Lowry Butler (1836-1928), Lawson Butler, Francis Marion Butler (1836-1928),Jaohn Mason and Jasper Butler. Thanks ahead of time for any info!
Matt

Knox County Kentucky

In Knox County Kentucky there is a place called Hinkle Branch. On a Google Terrain map there is a place called Horse Pens Ridge. I have climbed one of those cliff topped mountains. I was told that it used to be a Civil War lookout. Rocks formed troughs for the horses to be watered. Maybe this is where the name Horse Pens Ridge comes from. I don't believe the locals call it that though. Anyways, we climbed up and found some carvings on the rock that we were told about. One of the carvings said "April Lewis" and it may have had part of a date but it was worn off by water running over the rock. I know this regiment was not listed in the US Sailor system as being in that area but, I find it very curious that there is an April Lewis listed in the Sailor System. Only one listed. He was in the 34th Colored Infantry from South Carolina. I am hoping to find relatives of this man so I can send them the pic of where he carved his name in the rock and maybe they know more about him than the Sailor System and can say "Yeah he was in Kentucky" If he was in Kentucky, I know exactly what rock he sat on to carve his name in pretty close to 150 years ago. More info about the area. This place is maybe two or 3 miles north of and right between Fort Barbourville/Andy Johnson and Camp Cumberland Ford (now Pineville). Almost directly south between these two would have been Camp Flat Lick. There was a Fort Garber that supposingly was between Camp Flat Lick and Fort Barbourville. But I have yet to locate anything about that. It is a high ridge that would have allowed a person to see off in the the distance in all directions. I did not see any troughs but the ridge was lengthy and the place was covered in thornbrush. The kids have renamed it Thornbush Mountain.

So if you know this man or anything about this area, please let me know. Thanks a lot. God Bless
I am trying to locate information on the Daviess County, Kentucky Home Guard.

One of my ancestor's sons was a member of the Home Guard. According to an abstract of the newspaper article, the Daviess County Home Guard was under Captain Jim Wilson. It says Tinson Stout and three others died 14 July 1864 at Rough Creek in Ohio Co.

There were four killed, Stinson Stout (actually Tinson Stout), John N. Hinton, John Cecil, and Mr. Wooten.

Tinson Stout's widow applied and received a pension. The Civil War Pension Index lists the following:

Tinson Stout
Spouse Martha Stout
Daviess Co. KY H-Gde Inf (I am not sure if it is Gde)
Date of Filing: 1868, Sept 22
Appl # 165761
Cert # 120957

I would like to know more about this Home Guard as other family members lived in Daviess County. Is there a website that can help or a book? Any insightful information would be welcomed.

Thanks,
Rose

Hello!

My ggrandfather was Wm. John Lowry (1844-1917).
The National Parks list five William Lowrys who served
in The Confederacy. There is a Wm. J. Lowry who served
with the 5th KY Mtd. Inf. I ordered that person's service
record and the Kentucky Dept. of Libraries sent the record to me. However, the record had no age for the soldier listed. Can anyone give me ideas on how to find out if this is/others are my ancestor?

Thanks,
Jeff Lowry

This company was formed in part at Steubenville in Wayne Co -- KY. I am interested in sharing information with anyone else researching this unit. It certainly seems to be a mystery unit, with Internet resources being very sparse. My great grandfather, James Muhlenburg Carigan, mustered in at the organization date, fought at Murfreesboro TN and Milton TN (wounded there) and was involved later with Morgan's Cavalry. Basil Duke's book describes the activities of the 6th during the last days of the Ohio Raids. My ggf was captured on the same day as Morgan himself. Pvt Carigan spent most of the rest of the war at the wretched Fort Delaware POW facility. One of my great grand uncles, William Hutchison, perished at Camp Chase OH. Both of these men were from Frazer, KY in northeast Wayne County.

He was mortally wounded at Stones River and died in Nashville on January 23, 1864. However, everywhere that I have looked for info on the unit, I have found no signs of a Company M. On top of that I have not found an order of battle with the 7th Kentucky being listed as being at Stones River. Does anyone know where the 7th Kentucky fought at Stones River or a good source of information on this unit.

D, 14th Cavalry and the other is Corp L, Chris C Mcquithy, Co.1, 24th Ky Inf. How does one go about getting graves registered and the graveyard recognized as historical enough to get help cleaning it up? At one time there seems to have been a large monument. Not far from there we were told there is a colored mans grave. We have not found it yet. Thanks for whatever help or advise we get.

He later served as a Lieutentant in the 45th. Kentucky Infantry. He had a most interesting history during the Civil War and the stories that have circulated in many branches of the family suggest that he served as a Union spy while attached to the 45th.

Any help regarding this Kentucky Union unit would be appreciated. Also any help in verifying a soldiers spy activity or spy assignment would be GREAT. Thanks, Jeanne

Hello! My name is Bunny Arszman and I am directing a production of "The Civil War" at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center for Tall Stacks in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 3rd-8th. I'm contacting various re-enactors to tell them about the show in case they would be interested in attending.

"The Civil War" is a dramatic theatre concert. It is based on letters written by soldiers, the enslaved and speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. It is a contemporary mix of pop, country and gospel music that is sure to touch your heart. It is truly the right show, at the right place, at the right time. This production takes place right in the middle of one of the top ten attractions in the United States - Tall Stacks! Tickets for the show are only $20. Performances are nightly at the Freedom Center at 7:30pm from Tuesday, October 3rd through Sunday, October 8th. There is also a matinee at 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets must be purchased through the Freedom Center by calling toll-free (1-877-672-9965) or by stopping by during regular business hours.

I hope that you will consider sending this out to anyone who you think might be interested. It is a wonderful show!

Thank you for your time! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me.

Bunny Arszman, Director
"The Civil War"
513-325-7842

I am trying to determine if an ancester may have left militia civil war records. His 1861 and 1862 Carter County tax records state that he was enrolled in the militia but he died Oct. 1861. If tax records were recorded for the previous year, then he was enrolled for the years 1859, 1860 and 1861 until his death.

So is it possible that he served some time as a civil war soldier before his death? If so, how would I determine which army he served?

Lorrie

My gg grandfather was named John Smith. He lived most of his life in Lawrence Co. near Louisa and was born there 1847.

His was called "Captain John Smith", but no one can remember why, including my Grandfather who had lived with John Smith for a time when he was a boy (1920'ish).

I found there was a Capt John Smith in the 14th KY Infantry, and was wondering if anyone has information about him.

There were 3 John Smiths in the 14th, and the 1890 veteran census only mentions one, who is described as being totally blind... which wouldn't be my John Smith.

It's rumoured that John Smith lived and farmed on Indian land in the 1880's and 1890's. Would this have put him out of reach of 1890 census takers?
Am new to searching for military documents and was wondering if anyone could help direct me to any locations that might provide information on soldiers who served from the state of Kentucky during the Civil War? I am speciafically looking for information regarding William Stumbo who was born abt. 1805 and served with 5 of his brothers. They were the sons on Frederick Stumbo. (Floyd County)
William died about 1858, early 1859 and I have not had any luck in locating records confirming his service, nor any widow pensions for his wife, Elizabeth Stumbo. Any help or direction in this search would be most appreciated.

This is for Louis Brussells, who filed for his pension 29 Jan 1912, in Kentucky.

Here is what I'm confused about:

Geore(?) Reotg(?) Serv. U.S.A.
52 Co. U.S. Coast Art. (it definitely doesn't say "Guard")
Hosp. Corps. U.S. A. (this one I understand)

Thanks.

I am attempting to locate war service information from KY sources pertaining to John G. Simer (Co. D & F, 14th KY Inf.), Asa J. Simer (Co. G, 14 KY Inf.), and Martin V. Simer (Co. K, 16th KY Inf.) At the time of their respective enlistments, I believe the three were living in or around Lewis County, KY. I have copies of pension application files for the above individuals which list the last names as "Simer", however on various other items the name has been listed as Picklesimer, P'Simer, or B'Simer. The above unit affiliations are from the pension records, however the only person I have been able to locate on a Kentucky military roster is Martin. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

I have my great grandfather's (Levi Davis) military discharge and pension papers I orderedfrom the National Archives in Washington D.C. They state he was in the Kentucky 26th C. Company Infantry. Everytime I find anything about the Civil War, I read it, as he was wounded in the "Battle of Nashville". There is nevery any thing mentioned about the 26th division either on this site where all the company names are listed. This is a puzzle for me. Can anyone help. My g grandfather was from McLean Co. in KY. thanks. jlinc12317@aol.com

I would like to identify the William M. SMITH who enlisted in the 8th Ky Volunteer Infantry, Co G (CSA) 26 Sep 1861 at Camp Reeves, TN. He died 11 Nov 1861 at Hopkinsville, KY of pneumonia and measles. This is all I know about him.

F.A. SMITH also enlisted in the 8th Ky Volunteer Infantry, Co G (CSA) 26 Sep 1861 at Camp Reeves, TN and I am trying to find out if these two men could have been related?

F.A. (Frank Allen) SMITH was captured at Ft Donelson in Feb 1862, captured again at unknown place, fought in the Battle of Shiloh, and afterwards at age 17, he deserted 01 Dec 1862 at Hatchie River Retreat.

Frank was born 25 Mar 1843 somewhere in Kentucky and died 26 Aug in McCurtain Co, Oklahoma. He told his son that after he deserted he went back to Kentucky but all of his family was "gone" and he said he never saw his family again. We don't know if he went home right after he deserted or much later and we don't know where his family was living when he enlisted in 1861.

I feel certain that the information Frank gave his son is truthful as he was very honest about his desertion. He said that after the Battle of Shiloh "you could not take one step without stepping on a body and that was all he could take of the war."

This son died in 1959 but his wife is still living at age 100 and she doesn't remember ever hearing any names of her husband's family other than his father, his mother Elizabeth [Brown] who was Native American & died 07 Mar 1894 in Indian Territory, and his step-mother Eliza [unknown].

ANY information about the above William M. SMITH and Frank Allen SMITH would be gratefully appreciated.

Kathye

help identify this picture of the 13th Kentucky Infantry, Company B

This is supposed to be a Company photo of the 13th Kentucky Infantry Co. B. Has anyone seen this before that can confirm it? The fifth man from the right side, on the front row looks like Capt. Oliver Bomar Patteson.

Also, I know for a fact that there is a civil war reunion photo taken well after this one that has my ancestor William Henry Conover and other members from this company in it. It was published in an Adair Co. magazine of some sort several years back, but I can't find a copy of this photo. Has anyone seen a photo like this, other than the one that I have posted for the 13th Cavalry veterans?

Also, there is a Company photo of the 13th KY Infantry Co. B other than the one that I have attached. My ggg-aunt had it hanging in her home, and it was stolen after she died. Nobody has seen one like it since. Has anyone seen another copy of this photo? It would be a large, full Company photo like this one.
