I'm trying to find my gg-grandfathers death and burial. I see that Ancestry has an Iowa Civil War Soldier Burial Record database. My g-grandfather was William A. Bell b abt 1843 in Ohio. He was in the 10 th Iowa Infantry, Company K. Rank in and rank out was Private. Can someone do a look-up in the Iowa Civil War Soldier database and see if he is listed. He seems to have disappeared. I cannot find any obit, tombstone listing, nothing on him. His wife Eva Ann Crosley/ Crossley applied for minor benifits for their daughter, my g-grandmother, Winifred in 1879. Any help is appreciated.
Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers

I have the complete Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion, and would be happy to do lookups for anyone needing information. For those unfamiliar with this record, it lists a soldier's age and residence at enlistment, his place of birth, his company and regiment, his discharge date, and other regiments he may have served with. Often the record also lists whether or not he was wounded (sometimes tells when and where), taken prisoner, etc. All I should need is the soldier's name.

I'm trying to find information on my great-great grandfather William H. Gardner. I have sent away for his military records by they said they had to record of him. This is the information I do have:

Civil War Record:
William H. Gardner
Company A, 1st Iowa Calvary, Private
Enlisted: 29 Dec 1863; Warren County, Iowa
Mustered out: 15 Feb 1866 Austin, TX
Native of Michigan

Does anybody know of anyway I could get any more information about his time in the Civil War? I'm stuck at a huge brickwall with him. I've looked into pension records, but I don't think he ever filed for one since he died in 1873 in Arkansas.
Is anyone aware of photos of either of these Regiments? I am researching a Gavin Morton, born in New York, who enlisted (from Howard County, Iowa) as a Private in the 38th Infantry Regiment on October 23, 1864. The 38TH was combined with the 34TH on January 1, 1865. I am doing this research as a gift for a friend and I would like to include a copy of a photo of either or both of these Regiments even if Gavin is not in the image.

=================================================

Submitted by: Cathy Porter-Maynard

=================================================

CIVIL WAR:

William Sayles (b. 1837, N.Y., d. 1913, Union County, South Dakota; buried, Plymouth County, Iowa), served in Company B, ''Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry''.

William's 1913 obituary also references his military history. (F.Y.I., SEE: 1913 Obituary of William Sayles, attached below).

William Sayles frequently spoke of his great admiration for General Sherman.
Indeed, he named one of his own sons after General Sherman (''John Sherman Sayles,'' born about 1892, Union Co. Both the 1890 census and the pension application card clearly show this. The pension card indicates that Irenia A. Sayler, applied for a widow's pension on April 1, 1913, after William's death.

If you order the records, be sure to list the correct Regiment that he belonged to, and, if possible list the Application # and Certificate #, from the pension record database.''

=================================================

# 2: D.O'Meara wrote:

Name: William Sayles ,
Residence: Council Bluffs, Iowa
Enlistment Date: 10 July 1861
Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Iowa
Unit Numbers: 226 226
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 10 July 1861 at the age of 22 [?]
Enlisted in Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 08 August 1861.
Wounded on 29 December 1862 at Chickasaw Bayou, MS (Wounded severely in breast)
Mustered out Company B, 4th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 04 September 1864 in Jonesboro, GA

Source Citation: Side served: Union; State served: Iowa; Enlistment date: 10 July 1861..

Source Information:
Historical Data Systems, comp.. He first saw the light of day on May 17, 1837, and passed from this life March 6, 1913, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 19 days, at his home in Richland township, Union county, South Dakota, following an illness of lagrippe and complications.

When he was six months of age the family emigrated from the state of New York to the State of Ohio, locating in Wayne county. They afterward moved to Holmes county, Ohio, where his father died when he was about sixteen years of age. Soon thereafter he left home, first going to Michigan, then to Omaha, Nebraska, where he joined a mining party and drove an ox team overland to Pike's Peak, Colorado, remaining there about three years and engaging in mining for gold and prospecting.

*[CIVIL WAR]:

In 1861 he returned to Omaha to offer his services in time of his country's need in the great civil strife, and enlisted in the [Company B], Fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, serving three years. He was with his regiment in several important battles, among them Pea Ridge, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and Sherman's March to the Sea. He was twice severely wounded, but recovered and served out his full time of enlistment.

After the close of the war he returned to Medina county, Ohio, and lived with his widowed mother until 1868, where he became acquainted with and married Miss [Irenia] Albina Sargent on New Year's eve, 1868. In the year 1869 they decided to emigrate to the west. On January 20, 1869, they started by team from Lodi, Ohio, and their long, tedious overland journey ended March 12, that year at Elk Point, Dakota Territory. They located in Richland township, Union county, on a homestead, which has ever since remained the family home. They were accompanied on the trip by Mr. Sayles brother-in-law, Jesse Fetterman. At the time of their arrival there were only five organized counties in Dakota Territory, the settlements were few and far between and Indians quite plentiful. Through the grasshopper scourge of the '70's, the floods of the early '80's, the drought of summer and the cold and blizzards of winter and all the other privations and vicissitudes of pioneer days, when from a wilderness was carved out the heritage of peace, prosperity and plenty of these later days, Mr. and Mrs. Sayles were among those who pinned their faith to the future of this beautiful valley of the Big Sioux and helpfully and unwaveringly bore their share of the struggles of the early days. A man of undaunted courage, in whom the principles of patriotism were deeply imbued; lofty of character, with honesty and integrity as cardinal virtues; a reader and close student of current events, particularly political lines, being a Republican of the old school; a kind and loving husband and father; a loyal friend and neighbor; a good citizen -- William Sayles will be missed and sincerely mourned by all who knew him.

Besides his devoted wife he is survived by the following children, all of whom reside in the home vicinity: Mrs. Florence [Sayles] Huckert, Frank Sayles, Mrs. Lottie [Charlotte Sayles] Maynard, Miss Hattie [Harriet] Sayles, and [John] Sherman Sayles.

Three of his sisters are also living: Mrs. Rowena [Sayles] Voorus of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Mrs. M.C. [Mary Charlotte Sayles] Fetterman of Union County, South Dakota, and Mrs. Harriet [Sayles] Morey of Baldwinsville, New York. A host of friends offer their sympathy to the bereaved family.

After a brief service at the home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock, the funeral was conducted in the Akron M.E. Church by Rev. L. Stuart. There was a very large attendance, especially of the older settlers, as a last tribute of respect. Deceased was a member of Biddlecome Post, G.A.R., of Akron [Iowa], and the local comrades and members of the W.R.C. attended in a body. He was one of the first members of the Masonic lodge at Elk Point [South Dakota] and a delegation from the order there and a large number of local Masons attended the service and exemplified the beautiful Masonic burial service at the grave. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery [Akron, Plymouth County, Iowa], beside his brother Jonas [Sayles], also a pioneer settler, who passed away a number of years ago.

[end]

.

=================================================

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System:
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

No. 1

Soldier Name: Sayles, William

Side: Union

Function: Infantry

Regiment Name: 4th Regiment, Iowa Infantry

____________________________________

SOURCE:
Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

*[General Information]:

UNION:
IOWA VOLUNTEERS

4th Regiment, Iowa Infantry

Organized at Council Bluffs and mustered in August 8, 1861.
Need help finding a civil war veterans grave

My great great great uncle was named John Minihan. He entered the Union Army at age 16 in Ohio. The family continued west with the Milwaukee Railroad and settled in Clayton County. John returned home, married and was then divorced. He then enlisted in the 6th cavalry and served for a short time. He came back to Iowa, but could not stay settle and began to roam. After being away he was enroute back to Clayton County from Deadwood, SD. He took sick or was injured. His disabled veterans payments were sent to him in the town of Rock V. But because of a fold in a document at the national archives we could not locate the town. We have not been able to find a grave or record of death in Sioux County/Rock Valley. Can you help us find this man's grave somewhere in Iowa, so that I may fulfill one of my Dad's and my Uncle's wishes. Thank you very much

Andy Minihan, Aberdeen, SD

I have been looking into a Charles Marshall family from Adams co., Iowa c. 1852 to early 1860's. The family consisted of wife Nancy Jane(Colvin) Marshall. Known children are Mahala, Mary P and Joseph W. Charles was an imigrant from France, but I think he might have served in the civil war from Adams Co., Iowa. The whole family disappears by 1870. How do I go about figuring out what units were formed from Adams co., Iowa? and how to find out if he was on a muster list?

Thanks

My g-grandfather was Samuel Stanfield, and is photographed wearing a GAR membership medal. The family lived in Iowa throughout the war, and his two brothers were in Iowa Regiments. But, the only Samuel Stanfield I can find was in Co. G 15th Iowa, and is supposed to have died in 1864. My Samuel Stanfield was born in Indiana in 1846 and died in Texas in 1912. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might find his regiment? Thanks.

Am looking for anyone related to, or knows anything about, William Grant, born about 1812, Scotland, who was in the military since 1838. He enrolled in the 1st Regiment, company C of the Iowa infantry 22 Apr 1861, age about 49. He later was captain of the 11th Regiment, Company C, Iowa Infantry. Later, in 1863, February, he appears on the muster rolls as Captain, Company C, 4th Regiment US colored Heavy artillary, dated at Pine Bluff, Ark. He seemed to have trained colored troops the rest of his military career. In March of 1864 he was training the 3rd (later changed to the 4th) Tennesse Heavy artillary troops. He was killed 31 Aug 1864 on the steamer Burlington and thrown overboard, never to be found.
Would anyone know where I would look to find information about his death? My Aunt sent for all his military records, but nothing in them tells of his death and/or the circumstances of his death. I was hoping on finding someone related to him who might know more details, not just "handed down" stories.
I'm hoping some on this Civil War board might know something.
Mary Read

I've volunteered as a contact for anyone seeking or offering information on the 8th Iowa Infantry and would like to hear from anyone who might have something to share or has a question about their service. This information might include specifics on soldiers, letters, journals, diaries, service, etc. Much of my information centers on Company D, which originated in Benton County. Also, should anyone have information on the 8th Iowa's Colonel, James L. Geddes, I would really like to hear from you as I'm working on a biography of him. Thank you! Sue

Why soldiers enlisted in other counties!

In response to questions about a relative enlisting in a different county than where they lived.

Recruitment posters were often put up in other counties and towns when an active recruitment campaign was going on in the larger towns. You will find MANY of the southeastern and eastern Iowa soldiers enlisting at Keokuk or Davenport on the same day or within two days of one another. They didn't just go to the local draft board in those days.

I have seen these posters on e-bay a few times. In some of the diaries of Civil War soldiers or in newspaper articles you will see mention of a town meeting where a group of townspeople would get together and discuss the war and a group of them would decide to enlist. As a group they would then catch a train to Keokuk to enlist or yes, WALK to the nearest recruitment center. They didn't have automobiles to drive to the recruitment center. There wasn't a recruitment center in every county.

Norma Jennings
http://iagenweb.org/civilwar

I am trying to find out more info on a record from Ancestry.com Civil War Service Records.
My gr-gr Grandmother Mary A (Finton/Fenton)Crawford lost her husband in 1865 in Iowa. I can't seem to find her anywhere. I do not know if she remarried. A family record says she died in 1872, but not where. I do not know where she is buried.
I found a Mary A Crawford in the Civil War Service Records that says she served as a laundress for the Union Army. 35th Infantry.
Anyone know how I can find out more about this

Have a copy of "Campaign and Battles of the Twelfth Regiment. Iowa Veteran Volunteer Infantry" by Bvt. Maj. David. W. Reed. A 1903 private printing of the Regimental history for the then still surviving members, the book has a roster by company listing when and where enlisted, if enlisted, drafted or a sub and how they left the regiment - discharged, killed, deserted.

If any wish for a transcripton on an individual, will do so just by asking. If you know his company, it will help as there is not a cross index of name to unit. Pls - personal family requests, no pros from Dovers.

JPK

I've been reasearching the surname of Tow(e). There are many soldiers with the name from St Louis Mo area, and several wks ago found, Anderson Tow(e) who I think was a great uncle of my husband, died in 1863 and was buried in Keokuk. This soldier was in the 30th Regiment Infantry Volunteers Company A Missouri, and I can't figure out why he would have been buried in Iowa, unless there was a hospital in the area where he would have been treated. A researcher in Jefferson County Mo., sent me a msg that he died of disease. I see in your info that you were able to get photos of the civil war soldiers, and how do you go about doing that. I've found some info at: www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers. Thanks for any info.
Wanda

Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Civil War Soldiers

A few years ago I documented the Civil War soldiers buried in Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., Iowa. To date, I've located and recorded over 200 soldiers. If you had an ancestor buried in that cemetery and would like to check on information I might have recorded, please contact me. Not all these soldiers were in Iowa regiments but cover nearly all the Union states at the time. For a number of these soldiers I've acquired pension and/or military service records from the National Archives and would be happy to share copies of those with interested persons. I also have copies of obituaries for most of these soldiers, some of which include details of military service or a photograph. If you happen to have a Civil War ancestor buried at Linwood, I would enjoy hearing from you, and with your permission, include your name in the descendant record. Sue

Have a picture of two men in dress cavalry uniforms from Iowa. One of them is in a slot for Henry Wellman, but we believe it is actually his father Lorenzo D. Wellman who served during the Civil War in Co. B, 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Henry (b. 1861) is my great-grandfather and we don't believe he ever served in the military. Father and son were from Oran, Fayette Co., Iowa. I'm trying to locate a description of the uniforms for the 4th Cavalry, or Fayette Co. Does anyone know where I might find one?

Steamship service in Civil War - Ad Hine, U.S. Transport

I'm looking for information on how Steamers that ran on the Mississippi were used in the Civil War. My great grandfather (William) Henry COLE, was listed on the 1890 Vet Census as having served on the Ad. Hine- U.S. Transport from 1862-1864. In 1860, he was living in Keokuk, Lee, IA, working as a boatman. His brother-in-law, Clemens ZINGSHEIM enlisted with 5th IA Infantry Co C.

I haven't been able to find a record for him and his widow supposedly unsuccessfully applied for a pension. From what I can gather from a few things found through Google, that the ship seemed to be functioning as a private steamer, but also gave discounted passage to soldiers, and may have also transported wounded to the hospital in Keokuk. Perhaps my gr-grandfather never officially enlisted. The ship was officially sold to the Navy in June 1864 (after he had finished his service).

If anyone has any information on the role of these ships or suggestions for records to search, please let me know. (I tried the Rendezvous Report index, with no luck. Is it possible to look these up by ship name?)

Thanks!

If any of these men are your ancestors and you would like to see a copy of the photos, please contact me.

-James
jweaver9@sc.rr.com

7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment/Thomas J. Parrott

I am looking for information about my GGGrandfather Thomas J. Parrott. I recieved this information from a man doing research on the Parrott family lines but my line isnt part of his. This was all he had to give me...

I have done extensive research on my Parrott family in Iowa, and have also written a detailed history of it. However, I am no relation to your Marcus C. Parrott. I can give you the following information, however, and hope it might be of some help...

Marcus C. Parrott was born in July of 1884 in Iowa as the son of Thomas J. and Ida S. Parrott.

Thomas J. Parrott was born in December of 1836 in Illinois. On 12 March 1864, as a resident of Mahaska County, Iowa, he enlisted in Company "I" of the 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment, and was later transferred to Company "L" in the same
regiment. He was apparently married around 1880 in Iowa to Ida S. (maiden name unknown). She was born in February of 1850 in New York, and died in Iowa (probably in Woodbury County) in 1921. Both Thomas J. and Ida S. Parrott are
buried in Holman cemetery at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

In 1900, the Thomas J. Parrott family was residing at 415 Nebraska Street in Sioux City, Iowa. The family consisted of Thomas J. Parrott, his wife, and three children born in Iowa: a daughter Belle, born in February of 1882; the son "Mark C.", born in July of 1884; and a son Russell, born in January of 1887.

Thats the only information he had. According to family "stories" Ida may have been Indian. Im new to geneological searching and thank anyone in advance for any assistance you can give me.

I think it is my ggg grandfather William Crone b. 1831 who fought in Iowa's Company K. 24th Infantry. Is anyone willing to allow me to send a scanned email to help us date this photo? Also, where can we search for pictures of Civil War soldiers from Iowa? Thanks,Marian

Joseph Volin, Iowa Civil War Veteran

I am searching for information on the nature of the service of this Civil War Veteran. I recently found his wife in the 1890 Veterans Census for Yankton County, South Dakota listed as the widow of a civil war veteran. Joseph Volin (name is rendered as Volen, Vollin and occasionally Nolen, Nolin) was a cousin of Ellen Volin (my ancestor). They came from Jefferson Township, Dubuque County, Iowa, married in about 1864-5, had one son Joseph in 1866 that I know about and it appears that Joseph the father served in the Civil War, probably from Iowa. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 he dies and Ellen moves to South Dakota and later remarries. Incidentally, Ellen's brother Charles (listed in rosters as Nolen or Volen) served in the 5th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Anybody have any information. I can't find him on the Soldiers and Sailors Site or the Iowa Rosters. Thanks for any help.

All the boys were at his bedside during his last hours, his daughter being absent in California.

This is an obiit of my 3rd great grandfather, is there any info out there about the Co K 35 IA Infantry.

Thanks Lorraine

The COW WAR--Is $100,000 "just a lark"?

THE SIDNEY ARGUS - HERALD. Nov. 12, 1931. "THIS COW WAR OF OURS."--While Iowa will "get the boys out of the barnyards by Christmas" there are signs that the Iowa cow-testing war may be renewed next spring and prolonged indefinitely. From Cedar county, where it all started, the rebellion has spread to other counties until now testing under martial law has gone into its sixth week. With the appearance of guardsmen hostilities cease, but they brake out immediately in new territory.

If the completion of the work in the yet untested counties were all that promised trouble, the end of the war might be in sight. Only a small portion of the state remains untested. But the campaign for tuberculosis eradication doesn't end with one test. It has to be repeated over and over.

Heartened by the trouble which farmers in the southeastern counties have been making with their opposition, objectors have been organizing elsewhere to resist application of the second test. They threaten to submit only to military rule. This greatly increases the gravity of the situation. While the militia has been able to handle the situation without bloodshed, its continual employment for years or even months would create a serious problem. The cost of pacification would be staggering. For the brief time the war has been in progress the expense to the state is said to have reached more than $100,000.

They are especially interested in photographs, diaries, letters, personal histories, or family accounts from any members of either 5th Iowa unit. If you have any items or had an ancestor that belonged to either unit, I would appreciate hearing from you. Companies E and G of the 5th Iowa Infantry were recruited primarily in the Benton County, Iowa area.

My great great grandfather.

Would like to connect with anyone looking for a
Peter Davis, born May 18, 1835 in England. He
served as a Pvt. in Co. B, 10th Iowa Infantry. I
found his grave in Woodland Cemetary,
Salineville, OH when I ministered in that village.
He did not live long in Iowa, was not in either
1860 or 70 Census'. There is a record of his
marriage in Columbiana County, OH; Jan. 18,
1859, to Jennet Palmer. Looks like he was in
that area, moved to Warren County, IA, due to
fact that the unit he served in was from that
county. He did not serve long, and apparently
returned to the Salineville area. Just re-read an
old letter from Iowa, and it says unit was from
central and east-central Iowa. Davis enlisted
from Carlisle, IA. Will send information to any
interested party.
I'm looking for anyone with ancestral stories about the 8th Iowa Infantry, and particularly anything to do with Company D of the 8th. Colonel James L. Geddes, of Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa, was the regiment's colonel from Feb. 1862 until his resignation in June 1865. The 8th wasn't mustered out until April of 1866, however. I'm compiling a history of the 8th Iowa Infantry (I don't know what I'll do with it yet....) and would really like to hear from anyone who might have something to add to it. I'd especially like to hear from any descendants of men from the 8th Iowa. Thanks!

My gg-grandfather Jesse Hoisington was in IA at the start of the civil war. He was listed in the 1860 census in Winneshiek County. But, at the age of 38 and with several children, Jesse enlisted in Company B, Northern Border Brigade (IA state militia) at Ft. Dodge, Webster Co., IA on 9/24/1862. He served under Capt. William Williams and was mustered out 8/26/1863.

Apparently he stayed in the Ft. Dodge area, because in the 1870 census he was listed in Webster Co, along with his family. Later, he moved to IL and then KS.

I'm curious to know if the Northern Brigade was actually involved in the fighting in the Civil War or if this was a home defense-type of organization. I haven't been able to find anything on it so far.

Harriette
